Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

In the picture, you cannot see if he has data turned off or not.

yes you can. There is no symbol next to the carrier which means no wifi and no cellular data.

Yes, I tried everything imaginable, unfortunately I got it imported from Hong Kong and I can't simply change it. When I tried to give it back to those guys they started to wave their hands and tell me that everything is fine and I simply got to "close the background programs running, you have too many!". Guess gonna try to contact the Apple hotline.

Should be able to just bring it to an apple store and they will replace it.

That doesn't mean it is turned off.

It simply means it is not on 3G or a wifi connection at the time the snapshot was taken.

Thats not horrible usage. Over a full day and 3hr almost 4hr use (who knows what type of use) and 20% remaining. Thats not that bad like many others here. Again depending on the type of usage it could be great!

I see, so there is no chance that I might be the one of the "very few"? And if by fixing it you mean disable location services, raise to speak and whatnot – it didn't help.

A reply would be really nice so if some one can shed some light please do:

I usually only have one bar of service all day at work, when I send a text it basically drops my battery by 1% per text message, an 8hr day will typicall leave me with around 40% battery life, does this sound normal or should I  take it over to apple? In that 8hrs I will send texts about 50, make a few calls maybe 3 at 2-5 mins each and play a lil Draw Somthing.

OK while cant really say 1 %  per txt is normal I will tell you that poor signal will wreak havock on a battery because its struggling to maintain a signal. I would recommend you try it when you are a place with a better signal and see the results. Perhaps you can connect to wifi while at work and disable 3G/cell data? That may help

So loosing 10hrs with an update we waited 4 months for that was supposed to "fix" it not make it worse and you think thats ok because you dont really need those extra 10 hrs? Sorry but I am going to have to disagree with that logic.

As I said it didnt make mine worse in fact I believe its actually better than it was with 5.0.1 or 5.0 so all good there BUT having to restore and fool with it to make it work is where I have a problem. And I can assure you if I lost 10 hrs I certainly would not be OK with it.

Didn't help me as it seems I have lost about 10 hours battery life from 5.01.  Not an issue as going from a projected 72-78 hours to 62-68 hours isn't a problem.

Next update (IOS6) will most likely be June, or Sept.

I don't obsess about things I have no control over, and that don't really matter to the way I live.  That is, if a tsunami wipes out an island in the pacific, and I don't know anyone who lives there, then I don't get excited about it, other than being sympathetic.  If I have a phone that ran 78 hours without recharging, and a new update reduced that by 10 hours, it matters not a bit to me because it doesn't change my life.  Maybe it is because I am 69 years old, and figure I have better things to do with my remaining seconds of life.  So, to me, it isn't a problem.  Now, if I were a backpacker who was sometimes in the woods for 3 days, I might give it a bit more consideration.

If cellular data is on, then either 4G, or E , or the Wi-Fi icon would be displaying.

What we call 'standby' is actually 'time since last full charge', which is how the phone labels it, at least in English.  Usage time, is basically when you are using the phone, but can also increment when things the IOS does all the time happen.  It is in addition to, but simultaneous with 'standby'.

Yeah I understand that and I dont really obsess over it either as long as I can do what I need between charges. (as you stated)  But again the point is Apple should be able to do a better job with these updates such they they dont require so much user restoring and setting and resetting and rebuilding and off and on just to make it work. Certainly it should not mess up a phone that WAS working fine.

While there are many variables with how folks use it and how they are setup and what apps they have, if I take a phone setup a certain way with certain apps and its working great, then all of a sudden an new update that highly paid enginneers worked on for 4 months actually makes a working phone not work anymore, well thats not a good thing. And if said update causes the end user to have to constantly restore ahd jump through hoops just to make their phone work the way its supposed to work from the vendor, well thats not really ok either after a while.

I mean a new device and new OS, sure there will be some glitches, a few patches here and there SHOULD make those initial glitches better not worse. Thats all I am saying.  And Apple is a very sophisticated company with a lot of smart people, I would expect 4 months of looking into current issues would work a bit better than it did.  I mean perhaps, dont add new camera buttons and other features at the moment and concentrate on fixing an existing issue that causes end users to not be able to simply update without a hassle and solve the ongoing issues that existed since day one MIGHT be a better game plan. iOS 5.1 fixes  the issues then iOS 5.1.1 adds a new button or whatever.  I still do like my phone and it is currently working fine so dont read in here I am totally dissatisfied with it. I am just dissatisfied that an update that took so long to come out did not work any better than it did (I mean even in your case a perfectly working phone now has slower data speeds and 10 hrs less battery life due to an update designed to make it better.)  And stating those facts is not really "obsessing" over it. Maybe 5.1.1.2.1.7.3 will make it better until we start over the process with iOS 6

I understand what you mean but it is not "in addition to". In use time is not added to stanbdby time.

Standby is the total time including in use.

In use is the time it has been used, which is part of standby.
