Yeah I understand that and I dont really obsess over it either as long as I can do what I need between charges. (as you stated) But again the point is Apple should be able to do a better job with these updates such they they dont require so much user restoring and setting and resetting and rebuilding and off and on just to make it work. Certainly it should not mess up a phone that WAS working fine.
While there are many variables with how folks use it and how they are setup and what apps they have, if I take a phone setup a certain way with certain apps and its working great, then all of a sudden an new update that highly paid enginneers worked on for 4 months actually makes a working phone not work anymore, well thats not a good thing. And if said update causes the end user to have to constantly restore ahd jump through hoops just to make their phone work the way its supposed to work from the vendor, well thats not really ok either after a while.
I mean a new device and new OS, sure there will be some glitches, a few patches here and there SHOULD make those initial glitches better not worse. Thats all I am saying. And Apple is a very sophisticated company with a lot of smart people, I would expect 4 months of looking into current issues would work a bit better than it did. I mean perhaps, dont add new camera buttons and other features at the moment and concentrate on fixing an existing issue that causes end users to not be able to simply update without a hassle and solve the ongoing issues that existed since day one MIGHT be a better game plan. iOS 5.1 fixes the issues then iOS 5.1.1 adds a new button or whatever. I still do like my phone and it is currently working fine so dont read in here I am totally dissatisfied with it. I am just dissatisfied that an update that took so long to come out did not work any better than it did (I mean even in your case a perfectly working phone now has slower data speeds and 10 hrs less battery life due to an update designed to make it better.) And stating those facts is not really "obsessing" over it. Maybe 5.1.1.2.1.7.3 will make it better until we start over the process with iOS 6
I suspec that my loss of about 10 hours of battery life is as much because I finally ran the battery down to 5% and recharged, which recalibrated the battery chip. I have updated 3 phones from 5.01 to 5.1, my wife's 3GS, her sister's 4, and my 4S, and none of them have requred anything but a normal update process, which went, in every case without a hitch.
I don't know why you have been having problems requiring a reset, but I do have one app that just doesn't work well with 5.1, and the company is working on a fix. I suspect that there may be an app, or apps, that might be crashing, and not terminating properly.
My slower speeds seem to have returned to normal, so this may have been a local problem with the network as they move more to 4G LTE, rather than 3G. Of course, since I am on ATT, my phone now says 4G. It's magic!
Also, I suspect they did something to prevent the 'phantom usage' problem, which might take some processing time now and then which may impact battery life for those who didn't have the problem to fix those who did. Programming can work like that sometimes. In any case, I am not inclined to complain about a phone that can go for two days without requiring a recharge, with everything I want to use turned on.
