Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    ddfromCO,

be sure to do 3, 4 and 5 also and in the order listed. this not only clears any potential settings but also recalibrates your battery which is very important to get it working correctly... gl

I am no bushman....Apple stopped using gorilla glass after the first gen iPhone. None of my posts create an impression of bushman....And the thing is glass design doesnt cause heat, its the hardware.....Again, BUSHMAN!!!

SO I just bought myself a IPhone 4S on Sunday.  I bought it at about 1pm in the afternoon (only at 65% battery power) and only sent a handful of text messages and only added 3 contacts that day; by 10pm thats night I still had about 35% battery life and put it on the charger.  I took it off the charger at 6am Monday morning and added all my contacts and did some text messaging, one phone call, and put my phone on the charger again at 30%.  Tuesday morning I took it off the charger at 6:30am, downloaded about 15 apps, did some texting, no phone calls, and my battery died by 2:30pm in the afternoon.  So at 4pm I plugged it in to charge and left it all evening and throughout the night, took it off this morning fully charged, Ive texted a fair amount and played some games and noticed the battery was still dropping faster then my blackberry ever did.  SO I did some research and talked to a tech person who explained how when he reset all his settings (General-Settings-Reset-Reset All Settings-accept.accept.accept lol) that he found his battery power to improve slightly.  SO I did this-you only loose anything that hasnt been backed up, your contacts are still there as are any apps/games you have downloaded; I also deleted any "free" apps I downloaded(could have cookies which eat up your battery life for no reason), disabled Siri(can always enable her if I need to) and right now my battery after rebooting and everything is still at 50%.  I will let you know tomorrow how it did throughout the night but perhaps try this, it can't hurt anyways!

    Hope this helps!

    Til Tomorrow!

I don't expect a bushman to be able to read that I wrote that who cares about the type of glass - it is glass nonetheless. Or to be able to understand that I never made the suggestion that the "glass design" is responsible for the heat - I was replying to someone who had made that claim. What you are is an enthusiastic Apple poster boy. Knowing exactly when Apple stopped using Corning's stuff on their iPhone shouldn't be the subject of such pride or a-retentiveness. I am unimpressed.

I resolved the battery life and heat issue by taking the iPhone 4S to the Apple store and having them re-install the entire OS. This sucked two hours from my life.

Now, the battery life is what it used to be, but no better in 5.1 than before.

One tip: in Settings>General>Usage, if standby time and usage time are approximately equal, you have a problem with something in the OS constantly running draining the battery. Get the system re-installed by the Apple guys.

That usage time seems really low given where the battery is. I have wifi and bluetooth turned off, location based adds off, and many location based things set to no. I use wifi at home, where more than half that usage occured.

I've tried resetting all settings, restoring as new, and I'm currently recharging after a full drain. Do I need to go to Apple?

I have similar usage to you. I am also running on sprint's network, I wonder if their crappy service/signal in some locations is what is causing lower usage. Thoughts? I would like to know if I should go to apple also.

I brought mine back to store 2 days ago, the battery would only last like 2-3hours on 3G and without aswell close to that, with things like bluetooth, wifi and push turned off, its now going to a repair center, i also had problems with slow connections and low signal, ill inform you once i have more information about my repair..

edit: Yes i did update to 5.1 and recelibared the battery after updating and setting the phone up as new(not backing up)

You won't get info about the "repair" as your phone will not be repaired and returned to you.

It will be replaced (if faulty) or it won't (if not faulty).

If you are using the phone naked here is a great case that makes it a LOT more comfortable to use and does not distract from the fine looks of the iPhone. It adds a softness to those sharp edges.  Nice metal buttons for vol and on off.  And does help protect the front and back since its raised up a little. Check it out.

If asked, I would front of the line to say that putting glass on the back of the iPhone is a bad idea.  It takes more room (thickness), adds weight, and is vastly more subject to damage, both cosmetic and sturctural.  Worse, it makes the phone more than a bit difficult, and for me, uncomfortable to hold.  However, I managed to get through two years with my previous phone without dropping it on anything hard, or scratching the plastic back, or front, so I am pretty sure this issue won't affect me (I hope).  As for the OS, I consulted a salesperson at a store that sold bothe iPhones and various models of Android based phones, as well as Windows phones, and the salesperson had a Samsung Galaxy S II.  He said that if I wanted a phone to play with, get the Android, if I wanted a phone to USE, without trouble, get the iPhone.  I listened.

I found a possible fix for the battery issue on ios 5.1 for my iPhone 4S because I was also having issues.

    What I did was:

    1. I made a backup of my iPhone with iCloud
    2. I did a DFU restore to 5.1 (don't know if it matters how you restore, but I did a DFU restore)
    3. I set up my iPhone and did not connect it to iTunes, I just restored from the iCloud backup and waited for it to finish
    4. Afterwards, I reset all settings and set up my iPhone as a new iPhone. Don't worry, your apps will stay on your device, you're just resetting all settings. (Don't know if this is necessary as you did a restore of your iphone, i still reset the settings... you can never be sure, it might help...)
    5. I then set up Siri, wifi etc. using the assistant. I did activate location services but disabled sending diagnostics to apple. This might help! Because there where always lots of logs there and uploading them all might very well strain your battery (and data plan of course)
    6. I deleted my exchange and iCloud accounts and re-added them. I have pretty much everything on iCloud activated and a gmail account. I think this might be an important point, to re-add your exchange/iCloud accounts.
    7. I re-did some of my settings, like show battery percentage etc.
    8. I then synced with iTunes to get my music on the device, activated wifi sync and made sure everything is working properly and backed up to iCloud.
    9. Then I charged my phone to 100% and let it idle over night
    10. I also wrote some text messages, had a 15 minute phone call, listened to some music and browsed the web, Push is also on

My Result: 2.5hours of usage and  19.5hours of standby and still 58% battery left. This is really quite okay in my opinion! I always wanted to get to 1 full day of standby with moderate usage – continuing at this rate I might even be able to get full 2 days of standby w/ light usage!

    Hope this helps!

Since i updated my phone to iOS 5.1 my battery has been draining like crazy, even when I don't use it it will go through most of the battery in about 5-6 hours. This is just unacceptable, and no I don't want to turn anything off, I liked it the way it was before.

I have a case.  Less than $2 and keeps the phone from sliding around, or falling out of my shirt pocket.  It is a soft silicon case, black, and while it covers the phone, does a pretty good job of protecting it.  I wish it fit tighter.
