Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Read it again, it says 'UP TO 200 hours'.  That would be under perfect conditions.

Please define 'perfect conditions' and 'up to.' I am not that bright, you know. I learned to read in law school. If you are on Apple's payroll, I would suggest you intern at Zappos.com. Their customer service is fantastic and attitude-free.

One interesting trend: the more I complain, the better my battery life. Maybe more relevant: I did not use my iPhone and left it in standby, no app running, no calls, constant temperature (24 C) -- perfect condition? The iPhone has not crashed yet and battery life has increased from about 6 hours to 22.4 hours.

I am now reaching 'up to' 10% of the 'perfect' battery life. Way to go, rphunte42! If the battery physical condition has not degraded and the charge manager is not defective, then the issue lies with the iOS and a rogue process. This seems to be confirmed by rphunte42 recommendations - aka reset and perform a clean install.

I do not work for Apple, or anyone else.  I am pointing out the obvious, and that is that the 'up to 200 hours' applies only to ideal conditions, as the same spec for any other smartphone does.  Surely if you have been to law school, you recognize the 'up to' as a 'disclaimer' of a sort.  Expecting that time is rather like expecting every day to be sunny, and cool.  My battery usage, with my settings, and 3 or 4 bars is about 100 hours.  That's calculated, because there is no way I would leave the phone just sitting for over 4 days.

Your tips are fantastic in helping to reduce the battery wasting on my 4s, my first day of use the battery was reducing at a breakneck speed and the device seemed to run hot, after observing all the tips in this forum and reconfiguring the phone, it's holding the charge and running quite cool, I initially restored the phone on receipt from a previous backup from my 3Gs and thought all was well, but it's certainly a good tip to run through all the settings to reset all the stuff you dont really need to happen. A huge thanks for you and all the forum contributers.

    Hi to everybody.

I was doing something like a testing and getting experiance from all the stuff that may cause drain of Iphone 4S's battery. What I figured out is that you can use your old back up, but always do a RESET after it . Then just re-enter your mail accounts go inside them and let them load all the messages then close your mail accounts and open them again and see if it is still loading or it says updated. But the most drain in my Iphone was when it runs SKYPE in background ! DON't leave apps in the background ! I have push, locations everything turned on as it should be if you want to use your iPhone like an iPhone. So I got 5 hours, 11 minutes USAGE and 1 day, 21 hours STANDBY still having 20% battery. I think this is pretty good. If you have any questions feel free to ask

I've had every single iPhone since the beginning and the 4S has by far the worst battery. Yes, you can argue it does more than previous iterations however is it not claimed by Apple that the larger battery and better CPU make for not only an equal battery experience but a BETTER?

I'm not seeing this. I've done everything to my phone since I've had it. From restores, to firmware restores, to battery conditioning, to network settings restores, etc. I've restarted my phone from new near about 10 times in the total time I've had the phone (since it was first released, I got it the first day).

Everything is off, all locations bar network search, Siri- off. Brightness-half. Wifi-connected for most of the day, always on even when not connected. Push-Tweetbot. Mail-nothing. iCloud-nothing, just Find my iPhone. Bluetooth-off. ETC.

This is better than some people, I admit but is still poor in my books: photo.jpg

Just putting in my two cents.

Try without using iCloud. Make a reset and see what happens. If it still drains that fast that means there is something wrong with the hardware part. But to be sure make a fresh DFU restore and just make sure that you have all the contacts in the sim. Use it like this for day or two and you will see a huge difference.

Can you try set your iphone as simple as possible

Like my case, I did DFU restore, start as new phone, disable everything (auto time zone, location services all set to off, no data, no 3G, all notifications set to off, disable facetime, disable imessage, brightness set to 30%, no wifi)

Basically just telephony function is enabled. I set like that and it leads to battery drain. Some people here say that it's because of the old SIM card but I still suspect that it's because of dual line services provided by GSM operator that iphone can't handle. I'm still roaming and hope to get back to my country in a week or so to test ad confirm with several operator/SIM cards.

It will take one or two days to fulfill this experiment though.

Guys I believe I have found the solution, and best of all it diesn't involve compromising any of the settings on the iPhone.

I have been watching this thread from the beginning of 2012 since I bought the 4s, and the battery life turned out to be very bad indeed. I have also tried all of the solutions posted on this thread but no luck, also the update did not help me either, so for a while their I thought that there was no hope.

Until I accedently charged my iPhone 4s with my iPad 2's charger (it is a US charger by the way and I attached a converter/adaptor to it so it could fit in the sockets in my house in Egypt) and after I did a full cycle charge and used the phone through the course of the day I left the phone to drain overnight, as it became a custom for me.

But when I woke I realized the phone only took 3% of juice over night, so from now on I have been using my iPad 2's charger to charge my iPhone and it has been working fantastic. Today I actually have 10 hours of usage and 2 days of stand by and the phone is showing 58%

So I urge you whom have iPad 2 chargers USA version to give it a try and believe me it will work   I am not sure if this works with other chargers and other models or other regional chargers but u can give it a go, then u could thank me

It seems to me that there is a part of random code that came with iOS 5 for the 4S somewhere, that sometimes drains the battery and sometimes doesn't. Everybody on here is trying to find what's causing the problem and how to fix it however I am seriously starting to believe this is all in vain.

My phone seems to just do what it wants when it comes to the battery.

Sometimes actions can kick this random piece of code and stop the battery drain but I don't believe there is an actual algorithm.

I have had my iPhone 4S for only a week and have only used my (Australian) iPad2 charger (I am lazy and its the charger permanently in the wall socket lol) and I am not achieving good battery life on iOS 5.1. I had no issues with my now retired iPhone 4 on iOS 5.

Random code - conspiracy theory - who knows lol.

In my opinion it is pointless disabling features and/or not running background apps where these were the reason I upgraded the phone. Just keep a charger handy!
