Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Do you think Apple Support would share their empirical average figures for active usage and standby based on user feedback?

And since one mentioned he got his phone replaced and had better battery life afterwards: Do you think there may be different qualities of batteries built into the 4s?

This works, trust me! If you charge your phone when its at about 20% or so, or if you leave in in ALL night, then that is making your battery last less time.  What you need to do is; wait until your phone gets down to about 2%.  Then, you plug it in to charge, and leave it charging undisturbed until it reaches 100%.  As soon as it reaches 100%, take it out.  Then dont charge it again until it reaches 2% again.  If you leave your phone charging ALL NIGHT, then it is left plugged in even after it reaches 100%.  The phone then becomes dependent on the charger.  If you do what I just described for a few days it should last a lot longer

To all of you who report a significant battery life improvement after resetting their phone to factory defaults: Can you please share your before/after active usage/standby stats?

Just trying to gauge if my stats fall in your "before" range and a reset would be worthwhile.

I actually have had the same battery drain issue for the past week...but only this past week.  Before this I had pretty decent charge.  I tried to recall what i had done recently that caused this.  It was turning on the 'itunes wi-fi Sync'.   I wanted to try this so i turned it on last week and that seemed to be the culprit of my drain.  This morning i have unchecked that 'itunes wifi sync'  and after 5 hours i am still at 98%.   Could this be your culprit too?

We shouldn't have to turn off all the good things we bought this phone for, just so it lasts longer than 4 hours.

I wonder what Apple did during Beta testing that made them think this phone has better battery life than previous generations.

Well, most of us DO have better battery life, or at least similar battery life.  I normally charge overnight, then unplug when I get up, about 3AM, and then it runs until 8PM.  I am usually at 2 hours usage, and 75% charge.  I am a light user, and anything I don't use, such as bluetooth, turned off, and all 'system services' off.  iCloud, wi-fi, and cellular data on.

Oh, yes, real problem, over 40 million sold.  ANY other cell phone company would consider that a rousing success.  You have strange ideas about the 4S.

Pure, unadulterated BS.  Not accurate, dead wrong.

Please consult instructions for charging published by APPLE, not something written 10 years ago for NiCad batteries.

Wrong. The battery is a Lithium Ion battery and does not have a memory effect like older NiCd batteries used to. Charging it like that all the time will actually damage the battery instead of making it last longer. Using smaller charges is recommended more than doing a full drain everytime. What you are saying does not make sense with lithium ion batteries such as what is in the iPhone.

Mine too and it only lasts about 20hrs a day. And recently it crashes while opening some apps and the lock button appears to have an error.

My new 4S battery was only lasting 3hr. run time and 8hrs standby with everthing off.  Went to apple store 2 stores and couldn't find anything wrong.. It would get so hot making a phone call after 5 min. I had to put it on speaker to finish the call.  At least Apple care called the AT&T store where I bought it and replaced it with a new one.  The new one the battery lasts ten hours use and 24 hrs. standby with everything turned on.  Some of these Iphones are just bad.

If you make 40-50 million of ANYTHING some of them will not work well.  I am sure Apple will never release figures, but would estimate than the failure rate for the 4S is about on a par with similar complex techno gadgets, or a bit better.  Not much comfort if YOURS is one of the bad ones.  Glad you got one that works well.
