Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Daii, you've plugged the phone in since a full charge so that's not 100% accurate showing of what you've achieved.

That was for a 20 sec or so just to transfer  a pics, so I guess it doesn't make a that much of a difference. Anyways, I'm getting 7 to 9 hrs usually...

normally when your a moderate user battery drains from 5-8hrs usage,. if ur heavy user u only get 4-7hrs usage, w/ every things on and high specs, and the phone get warm always..the stand by mode usage it will depend on how u used the phone but the normal rate of battery % usually 2-3% overnight or reduces 3-4hrs per 1% (standby) just callibrate the battery one a week will do! it will be great..

Now we've had two poster, Daii and DevilMark, who sport the ~8 hours usage I'm aiming for. I noticed some other posters before when browsing through the thread... Evidence enough for me that it CAN be done.

I wonder if it's only a software/settings/usage habit issue or whether different iphones perform differently because of different parts used. For example, compared to my 4s, my girlfriend's 4 has a yellowish screen (just a bit, you only notice by direct comparison) and it is well known that Apple resorts to different screen manufactureres for its products. Then why not also for the (even less important) battery?

On the other hand, people who had their phone exchanged reported the same before/after stats - maybe they just had bad luck?!

Currently, from my last charge, I looked at a 6hr usage/3 days standby figure. The standby time is not bad at all and maybe if I used the phone more intensively I would approach that 8hr/2 days stats presented above. (However, that's still miles away from my gf's 8-9hr usage/3-4 days standby stats on her 4!)

On another note, I can confirm that switching off Siri as suggested by Apple Phone support didn't improve things at all, i.e. I couldn't tell it drained battery in the background like they claimed. Therefore, I'm turning it back on as I like Siri .

Good for Dai and Devil, but they are turning off cellular data when not using it, location services are off (this is annoying when quickly wanted to open an app like maps to find out where you are).

Why should we have to limit the capabilities of the phone just to get good (and I am reluctant to even say good) battery life.

While I realize that this is no longer the year 2000 where we used our phones to only make phone calls and play snake (thanks Nokia), we used to get 4 days on a full charge.....to only go 4 hours (which is way less than my macbook pro) is rediculous!

I find myself asking 2 questions:

    1) Why is there not a charger for this phone with 2 options; i) to charge the battery ii) to only power the phone so that it can be used desk side without hurting the battery?

    2) Why on this body made of full glass is there not the integration of some sort of solar charging mechanism?

Apple, I don't know who you have in your R & D Thinktank, but it's about time for some forward thinking. I understand that we have tapped out battery technology to the point that we may no longer squeeze more power out of a cell. With that being said our only option is to limit power consumption, or find a way to use our phones in a more power concious method without sacrificing the features that we purchased the phone for.

    /end rant.

    hi, just want to ask-

can i use iTunes to back up my phone before wiping it?

if you're using a mac, i don't suppose you're able to go into the my computer/iphone to pull out all the data/photos etc.

Fully charged and without using it this is what it was in the morning, 32 mins usage must be used by push services.

like i said stand by depends on how u used your phone.. its normal but try to used the phone once just txt or call for example, it will down faster about 4-6% after u used it.. i try that already b4. standby tym is 6hrs and usage is 15mins. still in 100% but when i used the phone, i'll just txted some friends 2-5x. i see my battery drains 1% per text..lol.after it reaches to 92-94% standby tym last for 4-6hrs again b4 it will drain up 1%. normal tym as i guess is about 1% for every 4-7hrs..w/o using the phone.

The 5.1 update seems to have solved the problem for most users.  The activity level has dropped 90% since the 5.1 release.

As for your problem.  The first few charge cycles are really not the best for a lithium ion battery.  It will get better after a few charge cycles.  I don't recommend turning off anything but features you don't need, as most of the features are on on my iPhone 4S, and I get a couple of days normal use (calculated as I recharge nightly).  Use it a week or so, and if you still don't like it, return it, and get another Android.  The iPhone isn't right for everyone.  If battery is a great concern, then I recommend the RAZR Max as the huge battery is its best feature.

It does not hurt the battery to have it plugged in at your desk.  The charge is 'smart, and will not overcharge the battery.

Solar charging would be a nice feature.  As for the glass back, I still say that is insane.  Adds weight, makes it more fragile, and serves no useful purpose.

ii) What? Why do you think charging is going to hurt the battery?

Maybe someone should make a car that will not actually start to prevent the motor and tires from getting worn out?

Most likely the major difference is in usage.

Talk time is 8 hours and that means using only the phone app. That doesn't mean 8 hours including a bit of internet, a few emails, etc.

Once you start mixing and matching usage, the numbers get tossed out the window.

Here's the specs from the -> iPhone page

Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G, up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM)

Standby time: Up to 200 hours

Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G, up to 9 hours on Wi-Fi

Video playback: Up to 10 hours Audio playback: Up to 40 hours

Go here to see how the phone was configured -> http://www.apple.com/iphone/battery.html

Most everything is at default settings.

Over 3 hours at 50% is normal. What more do you expect?  Apple says 6 hours of Internet use on their website on 3G and 9 hours on wifi but those numbers are only if you do just that. That doesn't take into account phone calls or texting or location services. If you want better I challenge you to find an android phone that does better. Quit whining because you don't get 24 hours usage off one charge.
