Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

To all of you posting their battery stats here:

Since the battery life indicator is NON-LINEAR, that is it decays at different paces from 100% to 0%, please only give your stats when your phone has only 1% left, just so to minimize any bias. This non-linearity makes it impossible to accurately extrapolate e.g. a 36% figure to the lifetime of a full charge.

E.g., on my phone 100% and 1% tend to be "sticky" numbers, that is the battery seems to last quite long here, while rushes down blazingly fast in between.

My 1% stats are at about 6 hours usage, 2 days standby, on average.

were almost same but i still got 5% the only dif is.. after 5% down to 1% my usage increase up to 8hrs and 50mins almost 9hrs and standby time increase + 5hrs so stat is 8hrs & 50mins usage 2days and 6hrs standby time. after i reach 5% i only uses my phone for texting and taking photos 3-6tyms. until it down to 1% which i used 2-5mins of gaming b4 it shuts off!

    Hi

i thought to update you about the battery status now:

    Battery: 24 %

    Usage: 4 hours, 23 minutes

    Standby: 1 Day, 6 Hours

I'm not using the phone that much, and most of the time screen is black.

    WiFi is ON

No application is running in the background

I checked my emails 2 - 3 times for around 5 minutes every time.

I opened the facebook 2 times for around 10 minutes every time

I didn't use skype at all since last full charge

I received some calls like 3 calls (each call around 2 minutes) and i sent around 4 - 5 texts.

no use of 3G because most of time i'm in office or home where there is WiFi... and 3G was ON for some time but after that i switched off and also the data switched off...

what do you think about it?

I wrote GPS by mistake but i wanted to write 3G

@devilmark: i can only dream of your stats so far , never came close to 8hrs, although most stuff is turned off...

the hotline said since i have the phone only for a few weeks that things might improve, i.e. with the battery getting better "cycled in"... how long have you had your phone?

And your reporting of about 1 hour of extra usage between 5% and 1% supports my observation that the battery life indicator is a highly non-linear function.

However, I noticed you have 5 bars connectivity - is it so all the time? because with my provider i only reach about 2-3 bars in my area... maybe that's a reason.... if it is, i wonder if it only affects battery usage while speaking to someone or even in standby mode (as the phone would have to work harder to receive incoming signals from the network).

my phone usage now at 54% in 3hrs and 30mins usage and 10hrs standby time, moderately used FB/emails/YM/Games/ for about 2-3hrs w/ moderate texting like 10-20text msgs. i charge it 9am up to now 7pm here @54%. so i assume that my phone can reach to 7-8hrs usage again. and will be geting morethan 1day of standby..by the way im using internet for 3g only.. no wifi connection here @home..my signal bar always at full 5bars.

Why is this so hard to understand? The battery can only be charged so many times before it loses it's ability to charge as it did originally, until it can finally no longer hold a substantial charge.

Stop reading the Apple KB's and pick up a text book, or at the very least read up on the web.

Yes, and believe me, I have studied this issue.  And if you don't believe what Apple tells you about their batteries, who DO you believe?

Lithium ion polymer batteries, like all rechargeable batteries, have a recharge life based on approximately how many charges they can take before their max charge deteriorates below usable levels.  The matter under discussion is just what pattern of charge/discharge is best for these batteries.  Except for size, they are quite similar to the batteries in the Toyota Prius.  Electronic controls are built into the battery package to prevent overcharging because this battery chemistry has been known to explode if overcharged.  In addition, deep discharge can permanently damage them, so the battery will just stop delivering voltage at a certain point to prevent damage.  Between those points, it matters little just what percentage of use you subject them to before recharging.  Toyota has found that their batteries last longest if they are recharged to 80% or so, and discharged to about 20% at the most, and this is how they set up their charge/discharge pattern.  On the tiny batteries in the iPhone, the charging doesn't really matter much as long as they are used in a normal way, with occasional discharge to allow the chip included for monitoring the charge to recalibrate now and then.  Basically, there is no problem with just charging them when you get  a chance as a 1/3 discharge done 3 times just equals ONE charge discharge cycle.

I am having some major battery issue with my iPhone 4s. I have got my phone swapped once. it did not make much difference.

The first 2 days the new iphone had battery life as below:

Stand by time : 1Day 20 Hrs approx.

Usage time : 6 Hrs 30 mins approx.

After that it changed back to what I was getting on my previous 4S.

Stand by time : 20-24 Hrs  approx.

Usage time : 5 Hrs 15 mins approx.

Usage Type - I am a normal to Moderate user. I have my Locations off completely. No Push mails at all. I play games for 1-2 hrs max in a day. calling could be 15 mins a day. Bluetooth switched on for 20 mins a day max.

I keep on changing my basic settings to get better battery life in my iPhone 4s. recently what I did was to switch off cellular data. I switched it off for couple of hours and I noticed a bit improvement in battery drain. I do not have concluding figures as I did that for few hours only.

Now, I tried switching back on my cellular data. I had a real hard time. Though the switch said on, I was not able to connect to internet. I tried accessing web and mails I received a message 'could not activate the cellelar data'.

In the mean time I saw that 'personal hotspot' wheel kept on spinning. This lasted for almost 1/2 an hour. During this 30 mins my battery drained 10-11%. I tried hard reset, simple switch off and on. couple of things and nothing happened.

it's been 1 Hr now and my internet is still not running well. The Hotspot wheel is spinning. Have tried opening google and have to reload it couple of times. It's slow. few of of my games requiring internet connection are behaving awkwardly as well.

Could Personal Hotspot be the culprit ?

You mention playing games for 1 to 2 hours a day.  You should be aware that the KIND of game you are playing has a LOT to do with battery drain.  I have one rather simple game that takes almost 1% per game because it uses the GPU for som fancy, but not required, graphics.

If the phone can't make cellular data contact, it seems to just keep trying harder, which means ramping up power to the receiver, and transmitter in an effort to establish, or maintain, contact.  This can be quite battery intensive.

While this is off-topic, I just want to point out that personal hotspot is not a service that you subscribe but rather a means for you to share your iphone's 3G connection with other wifi devices around you. Simply said, through the personal hotspot you create your own wifi network using your iphone.

Yes, you must have the service turned on by your service provider (and they charge for that), or the phone will turn off wi-fi if you try to turn on the hotspot feature.

    Thanks for your help

    now my update as below:

    battery: 36 %

    Usage: 3 Hours, 14 minutes

    Standby: 1 Day, 1 Hour

WiFi is on most of the time but more important that since the last full charge i'm trying not to use the iphone that much... in order to check the battery.

i used it like 10 minutes facebook, send 2 sms, checking my emails only for 5 minutes...

making around three calls (each call 1 - 2 minutes).

all other time it's in the sleep mood.

I did on the location services ONLY for the (Find My iPhone) application; and all remaining off.

I limited my noticifications to the below only:

Phone, Messages, Rimnders, Calendar, Skype, WhatsApp

    All other noticifications are off.

Also since last full charge i didn't use or log to Skype or used the WhatsApp.

    Siri is OFF.

Phone most of the time is almost black screean, and i ensure that no App is opened in bacjgound (by making two clicks on the middle button and assuring that no anything open).

    What do you think?

As I have said before, if you have enough battery power to get through a normal day with power to spare when you go to bed at night, you are doing fine.  Recharge overnight, and repeat until you get a new phone..

    Dear KC7GNM and Chris CA,

Your ignorance and stupidity will only warrant this last reply from me. After this I will say no more to you, nor anymore on the matter.

As I have said all along, the battery can only be charged X number of times before starting to decay. Every link that you have pointed me to and statement that you have made has only backed up my previous statements. Whether it is a full or partial charge, it is a charge nonetheless.

I know that the phone will stop charging the battery when it reaches 100%, my argument is that say I am at 50% remaining charge when I get to the office, and I know I will be going out after work. I would like to have the phone stay at 50% when plugged in to a power source where the "charger" is doing nothing more than acting as an AC Adapter.

Now stop posting the same link over and over, and re-read not only what I have said, but also the information in the links that you are posting......

I see that you both have plenty of time to troll this thread, but you are both turning this into a personal attack on me rather than a complaint that many users have had with Apple. If you don't have battery issues; great, stop replying to this thread then.

If you do have battery issues like most of us; I am sorry, please voice your concerns and frustrations to Apple, not to me.

Now please lets hear no more on the topic, and grow up. Thank you.

    the last update is below:

    Battery: 4 %

    Usage: 5 Hours, 42 minutes

    Standbye: 1 Day, 09 Hours

I never played any games, most of the time on standbye and screen is black.

    WiFi is on

just sending few sms and making 2 -3 calls and receving 4 - 6 calls....

Why do i feel that it's less?

I think i'm comparing with your stats ... which around 8 hours usage & 2 days+ standbye and you are doing gamesss....etc

    Please advice and helo
