Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I really dont get how apple screwed such a simple thing as battery.... Some say they are draining in hours and some say they dont see any drainage. My own 4S has now been on with bt, 3g, push enabled for 11hrs. Im now on 77%. Have also made phone calls at work for about 50mins.

I just started experiencing the battery-drain-o-death issue with my iPhone 4s suddenly last night, and after following just about every prescribed remedy on here (disabling push notifications, disabling location services, resetting the network, turning off cellular data, disabling/deleting iCloud, deleting email accounts, exiting out of applications on standby, etc etc etc), nothing has worked.  I ended up doing a complete reset by erasing all settings and content and setting up my phone as a brand new phone (without restoring from backup), and I'm still experiencing the same issues: iPhone heats up during minimal usage and/or on standby mode and during charging, and I still I go through a full 100% charge in about 4 hours of minimal/non-usage.

I finally called Apple support to be told that I most likely have a battery issue, and that I would need to send it in for repairs...I purchased this phone brand new in late February...seriously!?!?  Not even three months of usage and the phone needs a battery replacement?

Sad part is, I've had a very good experience up until last night, and then, as someone eloquently had put it, "It was almost as if a light switch just flipped" and now my phone is "defective".  I had one instance where I put my phone in airplane mode today, which actually stopped the battery from bleeding for about 30 minutes, but that seemed to be a fluke since doing so now no longer is helping.  All I can say now is thankfully I'm still under my one year limited warranty replacement period, because they will just charge me shipping to send in the phone and replace the battery, but I'll definitely be more leery when it comes to purchasing another Apple product again.

Before you go to the extreme of sending the phone off to Apple, try a hard reset.  Sometimes  program aborts, and continues to use CPU time, trying to end, and failing, continously.  Worth a try anyway.

That does not say anything about charging overnight, and I charge it more than 4 hours, If I were to charge my phone overnight, I would charge it for more than 9 hours.

After the intiial fast charge, it changes to a 'trickle charge'.  It doesn't harm batteries to trickle charge them for longer periods.  Essentially, no charging is taking place once the charge reaches 100%.

    Hi,

My experience since having the 4s. Initially battery was fine would get through the day easily. Then after about 4 weeks started draining very quickly. O2 replaced it. It was better but not good. Have lots of things turned off!

About 2 weeks ago phone suddenly started draining, 0% by 5pm ( I charge overnight) Went to Apple they replaced the battery. NO difference.

Rang O2 now have another 4s, so far so good. Left on over night on flight mode lost ONLY 3 %, much better was losing 20 % with previous phone.

No idea wot this means, apart from it must be the hardware and not the software.

    Coops

If you are in a weak signal area, then your phone has to use more transmitter power to retain contact with the cell tower.  This power comes from the battery, so, yes, it will drain faster than if the transmitter were turned off.  THe 'downside' of this is that in this mode, you can't receive calls, texts, or anything via wireless signals.

I suggest you charge the phone overnight, which should give you enough charge to make it through your normal use day.  BTW, how do you lose 20% overnight if the phone is being charged overnight?

I've actually done that a couple times already without any luck, but thanks for the suggestion.  I'm going to make one last attempt to go to my local (60 miles away) Apple store and see if they can run an actual battery diagnostic on it to confirm that it is indeed bad before I send it off.

My battery isn't bad but some days I'll go until 10AM (starting at 6AM) and still show 100%. Other days like today, I show 95% by 9AM. Same usage. I don't get it. It's not awful, it's about what my 4 got, but it's stragne to me.

Hmmm seems like my battery is normal now. Losing one percent every six minutes while browsing safari on wifi brings to ten hrs of browsing which is normal. My phone also only lost 5 percent on standby in ten hours last night, which is about half a percent every hour and ultimately 200 standby hrs. So draining then. Charging the battery while the phone is off worked!

Gah, Can't type. I meant to say that draining the battery, then charging the battery while the phone is off worked...or it seems to have anyways

Glad to hear you didn't have to send it off.  I hope this one works better.

You can try running the battery down until the phone shuts off, then recharge.  This is supposed to reset the calibration in the chip that controls the battery charge, and reports charge level.

Wow, Ive never seen usage stats like that. Average 3-5hrs. Maybe I'll try reloading OS again(3rd time). I do have location service on always, I use Google Maps a bit. I wonder what else could be the culprit if anything. I know Google Maps would kill my Hero in about 1.5hrs. Actually saw 6hrs usage before first reset.

At the moment my stats are:

    Usage:     4 hours 40 minutes

    Standby:  5 days 15 minutes

    Percentage: left 33%

The only issue I have now is that I know that I have NOT used the phone 5 hours and 6 minutes. My guess would be that a correct usage figure would be closer to 30 minutes[...]

You are the most underwhelming iPhone user I have seen in this thread - ever. 5 minutes of usage per day, including setting the airplane mode on. What a waste of energy, money, radio waves, rare earth metals, labor and intellectual property - no offense - but that's what your phone leaks of. An extreme example of the waste encouraged by useless consumption and consumerism. Please also consider philanthropy and do not hesitate to tell all your friends about this unusual response you got here. Nothing personal. Thank you!
