Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

The bigger picture is Why should we have to "limit" the 4s in order to help the battery?

Apple should recall the battery and replace it with one that can handle the functions of the 4s!!  PERIOD!

Everything has limits.  The battery is limited by the chemistry (which is the best available at this time), and by the physical space that can be accomodated within the structure of the phone.   ANYTHING you choose to do on the phone takes power.  It is up to you to decide what use you make of the supply of power.

Do you always have every light in your house on?  Do you drive you car at maximum speed, with a full load of passengers, and the trunk full all the time?  If you did, would you expect it to not use more gas?

When did Apple forget that its all about user experience?

The point is, 4S customers shouldn't have to deal with all these technical details of their phone. It should just WORK! Like so many of other Apple product just work.

Steve Jobs never talked in terms of technical details, he talked in terms of usability and the experience of using an Apple product.

Obviously, the user experience for a 4S is way worse than earlier Iphone! Thats just a plain fact!

That doesn't match my experience.  I have had only positive experiences with the 4S, and NO PROBLEM with the battery.  As for technical details, if you aren't capable of, and willing to, turn off functions you don't need, and adjust the phone to your needs, then you shouldn't have a smartphone.

Why such a passionate defence for a consumer product? Do you work for Apple?

I have a friend who has great battery life with 4S. Its quite well known that there is a batch of 4S's that are bad, and others are good. I just happen to be among the unlucky Iphone customers.

I love IPhones too, and that is why I am so disappointed that Apple has left such an obvious issue in their flagship product!

I wouldn't be on this thread, if I DIDN'T have an issue. I have other things to do! I just want Apple to do something about this problem that is obviously being experienced by so many (judging from the size of this thread!)

I have found something within my iPhone 4S's settings that has seemed to improved my battery performance significantly. Such as 5 - 6 hours of battery life with a full charge to 12 - 15 hours with a full battery charge.

What I found is if disable Cell Network Search, Diagnostics & Usage, Location-Based iAds, and Traffic within location services. You can get there by: Settings -> Location Services -> System Services (Scroll to the very bottom). I only found a battery improvement only when I disabled these services.

This is not official, but it's always worth a try. For example:

EDIT: Yes, my iPhone was plugged in since last full charge, but only for 3 minutes to sync new music from iTunes.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortanately changing those settings did not fix my issue with the battery. I am taking my phone to the genius bar tomorrow. Lets see what they say. I have had it just for 2 days.

The 4S works just fine. If the battery is a user's biggest complaint then they might as well not have a smartphone. I've had four different Android phones and my 4S beat out the battery life on every single one of them with more use. Battery technology still *****. There is no perfect battery for a mobile device... yet. Until that time comes power cycle it a couple of times and it'll be fine.

The complaints aren't so much about the battery in itself, it's about how it has deteriorated in such a short time between OS's. iOS 5.0.1 battery was MUCH better than 5.1 battery, and that is the problem.

Apple has sold about 40-50 million of these phones.  If .1 of 1% of them have a problem, that is a LOT of people.  I know of no one who has a battery problem with their 4S.  I have no doubt there are many who do, but the actual number of posters here is very small, compared with the user base.  I don't work for Apple, and this is the first Apple product I have ever owned, although I did sell them for a while back in the late 1970's.

I am retired, and have lots of time, so I  try to help users who come here with what they perceive to be a problem.  Some just want to know if their battery performance is normal, and others have the idea they can use the phone for 100 hours, full out, and expect to  still have half their battery power left.  MANY don't understand that smartphones are doing things even when they aren't surfing the web, or making calls, or sending text messages, and need information, and reassurance.

Okay, so last time I did a drain, then full charge this is what I got when it died:

    -Usage: 7hours, 46 minutes

    -Standby: 1 day 18 hours, 48 mintues.

Usage is pretty much all safari on wifi, couple of texts, and facebook

    What do you think?

Not bad for nearly 8 hours use.  Note that some kinds of usage overlap, such as streaming video through wi-fi.

I loaded IOS 5.1.1 this morning, and while it made no mention of battery issues, it says 9 hours 45 minutes and 93% charge remaining.  That is with very light usage, but calculating with that use rate, I would get 5.8 days use.  Anyone else make the update?

I almost hate to keep this thread going, but on 5.1.1 with my 4S, everything turned on, I'm at 68% now. Showing 3 Hours, 23 minutes usage, 12 Hours, 2 minutes standby.

    Not too shabby.
