Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Have you skimmed through this thread at all?   Restoring your phone AS NEW (not from a backup), then syncing, may solve yourt battery life problem.   If you simply get a new phone then restore from backup, you may very well end up with the same problem you have now.

I've been reading and following through this discussion from page 1.

1st time I "erased all data" from my phone, downloaded a fresh copy from my iMac and updated the software on my phone, then when finished I set up as a new phone and then synced my info from icloud and that didn't help any...

2nd time I just "erased all data" from my phone and set up as new and sync from icloud.

The battery still isn't any better...

In this case, a new phone may be in your best interests.....   Give it a try!

    Jameson beat me to it...

I was going to say, I've tried the different ideas:

    - Reset all settings

    - Reset network

    - ran the battery down to 0

-recharged it to 100% and left it plugged in for a while

and it is much better.  Still not as good as before the last upgrade, but I'm close to almost getting a full day on a single charge.

    AIRPLANE Mode works wonders.........

Given he only has one bar of signal strength, he might as well be in airplane mode.  A connection would be 'iffy'.  Grin.

and is it normal if I turn off the iphone at night and turn it on in the morning but got 10%-20% battery decreased? isn't turn off supposed to shut down the phone entirely and not consuming battery instead???

Not totally, because it still watches the button for power on.  Still, it should last weeks if turned off.  Have that one checked out.

One thing that I do that helps a lot is to reset my phone every morning.  I find that some programs can still run in the background with no real way of closing them.  Without doing a reset you can have a bunch of programs running and drawing down on power, sometimes extremely quickly.

For example I use a program Darwin Chamber as a White Noise background for my room when I'm sleeping.  Simply hitting pause and closing the program doesn't seem to shut it down.  The little play arrow stays on in the task bar.

Another program I use is joggy coach, ... it tracks my runs ect via GPS.  Only problem is when I'm done my run and shut it down, it seems to still be using the GPS to track me.

If I notice my phone batter wearing down by mid day to early afternoon, I reset it, usually helps a fair bit until it gets loaded down with running programs again.

Hope that helps some, but I still agree that the battery wears down very quickly.  I can handle once a night charging but even that is a bit crazy.

    Cheers

    -Jon

Having said that....my battery just dropped by about 11% in the last hour.  Sent a couple of texts but otherwise it was just sitting in my pocket???

3:55pm and I'm now down to 35% after a full charge last night.

Check my post on page 799. What I found here solved all my battery problems when I implemented it.

It's a bit extreme, but you have to admit, it IS effective.  I see no problem with setting airplane mode when you either don't want calls, or need to extend battery life.  My sister-in-law just turns her's off.

I have no problem with it either.   When someone claims extraordinary battery life, but fails to divulge that they do it with the airplane mode (or turning the phone off), THEN I have a problem!   It misleads everyone else and offers no value to the discussion.

My wife bought the 4S when it came out in october of last year. From the outset it was acknowledged that a conditionning technique was required to preserve the battery life so it was agreed the phone would remain mostly off all day, in its original packaging. In certain extraordinary situations, such as the need to ascertain usage and standby and take a screenshot, or activate airplane mode, usage would be possible. On a few select occasions she went as far as going "cellular" but rapidly came back to her senses. The results look promising, as that 5% should allow her to get through the summer before charging her phone for the first time -  I hope we won't panic when this happens - I wonder if we'll feel sad about the device dying like that? In other news there may yet be a relationship between handset usage and battery life...
