Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Ok everyone on the thread has a problem including me with the 4S battery life. Has Apple posted a solution. I have everything turned off and still have a huge drain. Has Apple told anyone to return the phone?

Try this... enable airplane mode when you retire for the night.  See what the battery level is the next morning.  If the battery level is fine, then you know the iPhone is trying to connect somewhere when the Airplane mode is disabled.  The next night, disable data service only and repeat.  See what happens then.  Maybe that will help track down the problem...

My iPhone 4s appears to be fine... It was 99% when I left home this morning and it's down to 84% after 8 hours.  I played a game for 30 minutes, browsed the interent for news and had a couple of short calls.

I do back up to the cloud, notifications are on for calendar, phone, messages and reminders only.  All email settings are set to fetch only.  location services are on for weather, siri, find my phone and GPS locator.

Wifi and bluetooth are both off.

so by everything off are your sure?

I thought I had everything off too, but with wifi, bluetooth, icloud supposely off my phone was still hitting 70 and 80% cpu non-stop.

Try doing what I did, go to settings, icloud, documents and data and turn that off.  and turn off the other pieces of icloud as well.  apparently the global setting of dont use icloud doesnt do what you think.

mine icloud was off, but until that one specific setting was additionally turned off my problem persisted until then.

I kept checking the activity monitor and sure enough that one setting dropped it to 1% cpu and the battery held steady.

dont assume anything is off just because it says off lol, dig deeper I was surprised too that the documents and data made the difference since if icloud was actually off it should have had no impact.  but it did.

Mine drains at least twice as fast as my 4, I'm disappointed. I've had every verson but the 3gs and this one is the worst battery

after fixing my 4s battery problem today I can say its not the hardware and its not the battery (new battery supposedly has more capacity) its a software problem.

see my other posts for the solution i used.

ps I only had to turn one thing off to fix it, can leave all the other cool features active and running, no problem.

Day 4 at Disney World and my iPhone 4s has yet to make it through even an afternoon at the park. Have tweaked all the settings, and even gone into airplane mode, but taking videos is killing the battery.

Have no other apps running that I know of, and yet in 3 hours of park use taking pics and videos of the kids, battery is almost completely dead.

Worse, the video focus is HORRIBLE. And the white balance shifts, while proved from the 4, are still terrible. C'mon Apple, if Flip can build a cheap camera that doesn't shift white balance and can hold focus without defocusing and then 'snapping back', why can't you????

Maybe this explains why the folks at Apple have the impression that the current generation of 4G chips eat too much battery, when so many other companies are able to design working 4G handsets.

Then again, I haven't seen too many of the current 4G handsets that don't eat batteries...

I've done everything I found available to prolong the battery life

but still it consumes a lot more of what it should

To keep it alive I have to turn everything I like off

    Is this fun?   noooo

I got the iPhone 4s because I like all the extras

If I'm forced , because of the short battery life, to use it just as a normal phone

why did I spend so much money?!

What did you have to turn off? GPS perhaps?

    My Battery is aweful.

I used GPS and traveled for 30 miles (approx. 45 mins). I started with 100%. I was not talking on the phone, not using Siri and not playing music. I was shocked when I got to my destination with 50% battery life. 50%!!!!! I did the same trip with iPhone 4 and I would arrive with 85%.

I to have tried everything to prolong the battery life, taking advice off friends that have had previous iphones. But I am still left extremly disappointed. My 14 day return policy ends on tuesday and its likely I will be sending the phone back. I am paying good money for this phone and tariff for all these extras and find I cannot go through a day without having to recharge. Do Apple really expect people to carry their chargers with them all day !!!!

I have an iPhone 4 and was running iOS 5 fine for many days, then out of the lue one day this week my phone started losing 10% or more battery per hour while it was sitting idle (asleep) in my pocket with no apps running.  A day later the same thing with my iPad.

What I noticed is in the new notification center, my calendar alerts were "jumping" around like crazy.  Definitely not normal behavior.  This was happening on both my iPhone and iPad.

Next day at work, I had three of my co-worker experience the exact same thin on their brand new iPhone 4S's.

I think this has something to do with connecting to a Microsoft Exchange server, and having calendar notifications turned on.  I have a video of it happening on my iPad if anyone from apple is interested in seeing it.

For me the problem only went away after I disabled everything in the notification center and rebooted my iDevices a couple of times.

no I only turned one thing off (after using an activity monitor and turning everything I could find on and off and checking the monitor).

go to settings -> icloud -> documents and data -> documents & data (on/off) and turn it OFF.

thats it, after trying everything else, icloud off, bluetooth off, gps off, etc no luck at all.

then I hit that one setting and even eith icloud off I still had to turn the documents and data off

and presto went from 70 to 80% cpu to 1%.  now ive gone all day with everything else on

and my 4s is still solid green.  ymmv.

    Hi there.

This happened to me before on my iPhone 4.

Can you check your usage time compared to your standby time (inside Settings app, choose General and then Usage)? Any chance of being exactly or almost equal even if you haven't been using the iPhone?

If that is the case, would you mind turning your 3G and Data on, just for a couple of minutes and wait? No need to do anything else.

After these, try waiting for some more minutes and if usage time is lower than standby time, then your problem should be fixed.

I've had this happening to me several times and this always fixed it, until it came back...

From what I read, usually it's some kind of app that is always trying to connect via 3G (even if you have Wifi connection) and draining the battery on this behalf. This would explain the fact that it doesn't happen to everyone.

Does anyone care to try this and report back?

    Best of luck to all.
