Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    HYPOTHESIS

Interesting.  I just noted that I was able to produce about 700 MB of photo / video data on my iPhone 4S in just a couple days in only about 50 files.  This is because the iPhone 4S generates so much data with its HD video capability.

I shudder to think how long it would take to upload 700 MB of data, even using WiFi through my anemic cable modem upstream bandwidth.

I thought I had photostream turned off when I was still experiencing the battery drainage problem, but I will check to be sure, and also check to be sure that when photostream is turned off, that the phone is indeed not syncing the photos videos.

By default, the 4S is set to upload photos and videos only when attached to WiFi, but when there is a lot of data being uploaded (particularly in videos) it would be better if the phone only uploaded when actually attached to the power supply, or, say, when the battery fullness was greater than 70 %.  Otherwise, those batteries are likely going to drain very fast while the phone chugs along trying to trudge through massive uploads.  Apple could think about putting in a warning message when the phone is disconnected from power supply when there is a lot of syncing yet to do…

I don't think this really explains everything, since a lot of people seem to be reporting that turning off photostream doesn't help.  But I'm also going to check to be sure that turning off photostream actually turns off photostream.

I am a new iPhone user and my 4s lost went from 100% battery to 94% this morning just checking my email! It is now 12 hours later and the battery is completely dead. I have all push notifications turned off and am careful to close all open applications. The battery power is much worse than my Droid's ever was. Am very disappointed and not sure what else to do. Have adjusted screen brightness etc already.

It's all well and good saying turn this and that off. We shouldn't have to sacrifice functionality based on the fact that it's the very reason many of us bought the phone in the first place. And I didn't have this problem with previous models.

OK...Can some one tell me if it is normal to just get between half and 3/4 of a day on a full charge and almost no siri use?  Some days I never use it and use the phone very little (like the last 3...I am stuck at home sick)  but I run under 10% by late pm...

I thought it was normal with the new processor but after reading these I am not sure....I am also having crashes issues with my MBP and I do not want to complain to apple if I am getting standard battery life after all.

    THANKS!!!

Same problem here. Very rapid drain and a very hot iPhone 4s with hardly anything running and everything turned off that should be. I sense a batterygate coming...

I can almost watch my battery life % melt away -- a few minutes of use can reasonable causes multiple % points of loss.  Its like a melting ice cream cone

The whole reason I got a 4s was to replace my launch day 3gs that could barely last a day on stand by... this one may be worse. My Ipad2 with ios5 with a Ton of stuff "turned on" has been sitting on stand by for more than 10days and still has 42% charge ( use it for e-mail,web, reading books every day). My 4s which is no longer considered a smart phone due to amount of stuff turned off might make it 24h on stand by, If I "Use it" for short phone calls and light app or web use maybe I can get 10h. No official response.. just the echo of a lot of erkred used and a the growing drums of the media getting louder.... come on apple, at least say there is an issue.and you are working on it.

I have a 4s, white, 32gb on AT&T and have horrible battery life as well. I used the iOS 5 beta for a few months on my iPhone 4 and had no problems at all. Ever since I "upgraded" I've had to charge my phone at least once and sometimes twice daily with light to moderate usage. I am hoping Apple is close to a solution of some sort!

It seems to me that this issue is an iOS 5 problem. We are iPhone 4 users and recently installed the new OS and have experienced serious degradation in battery life. With limited use, the battery does not last an entire day.

I know this is a 4s board but I am having the same issue with my 4 since moving to iOS 5. I have been to the apple store and they ran a full diagnostic with no out of normal findings. They did a complete restore with no noted improvement They only offered to replaced my "good" battery as we have nothing else to offer move.

Based on your posts I am thinking this issue is rooted in the OS. Not the model.

This is acutally for anyone from Apple reading this: I have two backups of my phone before and after the battery situation, so I'm happy to restore it to my initial configuration if you want me to install diagnostic apps.

Also, I have some new finding in case it's useful. I just re-enabled push for my email, and have it fetch every 15 minutes, and it's draining a lot quicker. My email accounts can be pretty active (5 msg per minute), and it appears that every time a new email is received, the CPU spikes (for threading and indexing for search perhaps?). So it appears that by reducing the frequence that new emails are pulled in, the CPU isn't as taxed. Again, just a hunch.

Anyway, I'm happy to restore my phone to the power-draining backup to see if any useful data can be collected. My email is <first name>chao mac.com
