Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Im having the same issue. iPhone 4 would last most of the day maybe a quick charge when I get home but generally it would last. I've disabled the system location things iAds etc (even disabled Siri which really makes me think if I can't use it as it screws the battery why bother buying the new flagship phone which has this as the main selling point!) and I lose visibly percentages from the battery purely but unlocking it. Don't get me wrong I love the 4s it's a fantastic phone like the iPhone 4 before it but I am very disappointed with the battery life.... I genuinely think this could seriously damage Apple's reputation in the phone industry if it's not sorted !!!

I, too, was having horrendous battery loss. I saw on another post that logging out of the Facebook app made a big difference.  BINGO.  Great improvement.  It's still not as good as I'd like, but at the end of the day, with only two brief 15-minute recharges while plugged into my car's audio, I'm at 40%.

I suspect it's going to take a combination of adjustments on Apple's side in the OS, as well as multiple app developers. I'm sure the Facebook App isn't the only battery drainer.

Someone brought up corporate/enterprise use... you would think Apple would have tested both frequent and large batches of emails if they have any hope of taking some of Blackberry's business. So, even if it is not push per se, you would think that, in this day and age, that products would be handling large numbers of emails.

I just find it interesting that people think the company that didn't build MMS functioning into its earlier iOS versions in favor of email would build a phone that couldn't handle the amounts of email real people receive.

Same thing here. Battery drops 15% per hour at least. I have to keep plugged in all day while driving and at home. Have turned off many features to no avail. BTW, why have an iPhone when you have to turn off all of the features? Have heard that some people are getting corporate attention by the way of having a data logger installed temporarily to keep track of battery usage. Apple corporate, if you are reading, please send that file my way. I am more than happy to help.

If we opt to try and exchange the phone, do you have to show up at 5am to ensure you can get one? Are there still lines?

From the sounds of it, mine is not that bad. Mine has been off the charger since 8am (6:45 pm now), down 30% in battery... 25 minutes of talking, 1 hour 40 minutes useage and some 9+ hours of standby.

From what I hear- yes. Its specifically used to track battery data. It is sent via email from apple engineers and you have to upload it to the phone.

Yes there are still lines. You have to reserve your phone online via Apple.com after 9 PM the night before. There is no guarantee that they will have the phone you want either (size/color/carrier)

I've been testing iOS 5 since the very first beta on my iPhone 4 with no issues related to battery whatsoever.....

Once I got the 4S though, the story changed.  At first it seemed like the battery on the 4S was way better for me than the 4 ever was, I loved it.  Then the mystery drain started happening.  Halfway through the day with almost no use and Im down to 30%.

Long story short, I found the culprit in my case.  It was location services for Time Zone.  The first thing I noticed was my phone was really warm when the drain would happen.... and I knew from experience that nothing will roast a battery faster than GPS.  So I went into Settings -> Locations Services -> System Services -> Status Bar Icon (change to ON).  I did this to see if the next time it happened I could see a visual that something was incorrectly hammering on the GPS.  Sure enough a day later it happened.  Phone was hot, battery hammered, and location service icon that I turned on was showing purple.  So I went to Settings -> Location Services to see what was using it.... nothing there so went further to System Services under Location Services again.... low and behold 'Setting Time Zone' was the culprit.  I switch that to off and my 4S has been 100% flawless ever since.... (about 4 days now).  I will be filing a bug report, but anyone wishing to reach me is free to.

I hope this helps others.... I'm sure there will be a fix soon enough.

-Already lost 10% already in the last half hour, I did a re-contract and paying the price for this equipment, sadly it really isn't worth the price tag even outright especially on the battery life.

So hoping someone does recognise the issues at hand and does work on making a fix, I doubt I could even opt out of a contract term as I do travel a fair bit and if the battery is the way it is now I cannot really rely on it personally.

Wonder what the androids are like?

Sorry but I did not read the whole thread. My 4S started out with great battery life when I first got it, but over the last few days my battery gets down to the 30% range within 6 hours of taking it off the charge. Normal phone usage with very minimal notifications. Hopefully this addressed asap as there are times when I cannot get a charge on it in the middle of the day.

    [PLEASE READ MY STORY]

My name is neto and I live in USA. As everybody on this thread, we are passionated by Apple and especially iPhones.

After almost 20 days waiting my new device, I have got my iPhone 4S yesterday (64GB Black - ATT). Basically I did the initial setup (using only Email - Exchange and yahoo messenger).

As everybody, my battery was draining like a crazy. I did all the things that you can imagine and nothing happens.

OK, I scheduled the "Genius" at Apple Store. I went there and the Genius came to talk to me. I have been working in a science computing industry for more than 20 years (so I have a little of experience) and the I had a TERRIBLE experience. First the Genius thought that he was the best of the universe and he told me that was normal. I said: "Excuse-me, how can you say that is normal 50% drop battery in less than 4 hours" (I had ALL services off - less email) and he told me: that is your exchange account.

I said: "Excuse-me, my exchange account..." - You need to talk to your exchange administrator...

Long story short: The genius threat me like an stupid and was very rude. I asked to talk to his manager. I spoke to the manager and was the same to talk to the wall.

I cannot express in words my frustration and my disappointment.

We never cannot say never, but for my experience today, Apple will have one less customer (I don't know if Apple CARES, but I'm very very disappointed)

I wish all the lucky and the best to everybody on this thread and I hope someone from Apple Corporation reads this and please take an action, because I can accept everything (even a BUG on IOS 5 or iPhone 4S but ... this... doesn't make any sense)

    All the best

One customer extremely extremely disappointed with Apple iPhone 4S and how was appointment with the Genius.

Has anyone noticed an improvement from turning off the "time zone" location setting from "system services"? Why is this even a feature? Can't the phone just pull the time zone from the phone carrier? I turned "show running system services" and notices it was on draining my battery.

The battery on my iPhone 4S doesn't even last as long as my 3 year old iPhone 3G. Sometimes, I can actually count the battery percentage going down. The most I have seen is 4.5 hours of usage. Thats with screen brightness turned down to almost minimum. Turned off Siri, bluetooth, location services, all notifications except imessages and phone etc. Wifi was turned on only when using data. Also I keeps losing signal when in college buildings. Since there is no 'turn 3G off', i can't drop to 2G coverage which works better when in buildings. I can't send messages because it says no coverage. The phone keeps looking for 3G coverage. My old iphone gets 4 bars on ATT GSM and my friend gets 4 bars on verizon in the same building. It keeps happening in most places. I don't know whether to blame ATT or Apple.  I am thinking about returning it.
