Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I have turned off the Siri application and since then my battery is working as expected when you buy a new phone. Only things I've done from posts I've read in this thread was turn off the data sharing with Apple, turned off the Exchange calendar notifications and turned off Siri. After the last one, turning off Siri, the battery is awesome. So thats my experience.

Battery life on my wife’s 4s not only disappointing, it’sunacceptable!  Common Apple, this isn’tlike you!  My wife’s 4s will drain to red line in less than 8 hours from a full charge, with less than 20 min of talk time.  My iphone 4 battery will last for 3 days with similar use.  I am attempting to restore the phone to see what happens, it seems that it has worked for somepeople.  My wife is ready to go back to the Droid; help!!

It's a GroupWise server that we sync to mobile devices via Exchange. I don't know all the details, but I do know it's the latest vision and patches. If you're not aware there have been issues with Exchange and Novell (a lot of finger pointing as well) among others, related to a semi-recent Exchange upgrade.

Knowing that Exchange had issues with GroupWise, I've had a suspicion every time I hear it mentioned in this thread.

    So, back to our problem:

I can setup the account fresh, but I can't otherwise sync it. I am also sure there must be some "contacts" there, but I've never intentionally used the account for contacts, so it may be a limited sample.

I'll give it a go and see what happens.

Like everybody else I'm a frustrated Iphone4s buyer and I'm more than disappointed that such an expensive product ***** so much - my whole world is build around Apple products and you dare to sell products where battery live is not capable to last longer than seven hours? This is not acceptable and not fair to sell such crap to your customers - the Iphone 4/4s are the best products you have ever built? Paah! Its a shame what you sell here and I want you to fix this issues as soon as possible to get rebuild my confidence and trust in your company!

APPLE - YOU HAVE A QUALITY PROBLEM - FIND A SOLUTION - NOW!!!

I agree with you...this is disappointing.  But, this is what happens when you release new software and the user base discovers issues you couldn't anticipate in dev/test.  The true test is how quickly Apple can identify the root cause and issue a fix.  I've helped friends with their Android phones that have had critical issues after updates as well, so this type of pain isn't unique to Apple or MS or anyone who distributes software.  So, while it's not ideal as someone who relies on my phone because I travel a lot, I'm confident they'll fix it quickly.  (But hey, I'm an optimist.  )

My battery performance has diminshed considerably and I have done the follwoing to correct the problem: lowered brightness, deleted apps I don't use, turned off all notifications and some location services, disabled data and usage retrieval and then I restored my iPhone on iTunes to my backup.  Nothing has worked other than bringing my cords with me everywhere and plugging in.  this is so frustrating.  I am thinking of restoring the phone on my iTunes as a new phone. Has anyone tried that? What will happen to my contacts, words with friends, notes, calendar, etc...?

Everyone - please take a deep breath and realize this phone has not been out very long. These issues will get addressed. Apple is always very good about addressing these issues. Provide as much information as possible and it will get addressed. Everyone did this during "antenna gate" and it wasn't a big issue. I realize that battery life is important, but simply take a deep breath and realize that it will be addressed very soon. Apple is better than any other company I know of to address these types of issues.

Moses - can you tell us about your mail account configuration?  Do you have an Exchange account from work, or do you sync with GMail or another source?  Are you using iCloud services?  Which ones are active on your iPhone?

This is not limited to a new phone model. It's also happening on the older 4 model, hence a software issue. Stop making excuses for a software flaw that should have been spotted before iOS5 was offered to the public. How this issue made it out of any testing phase unnoticed or unaddressed is beyond me..... This is the textbook definition of dropping the ball.

I realize it's a software issue but a majority of the complaints are from iPhone 4S owners (me included). I agree with you completely and this should have been addressed long before. On the other hand, I don't think a "class action lawsuit" is really necessary at this point. I love when people jump on those and then they realize they get $0.36 out of it while the attorneys make all the money.

I think everybody needs to calm down. Apple released iOS5 with a major bug. What else is new? Every company has issues like this. It's called "banana software" because it ripens after the end user buys it. You guys wanted to be the first ones to get your hands on this brand spanking new iPhone so that you can brag about it. Many of you stayed up all night so that you could pre-order it the minute it became available. You are now reaping the fruit of your impatience and obsession with gadgets. What you need to do now is to learn how to be patient. Apple clearly has heard about this issue an is now working on the fix. You should be expecting an iOS update in the upcoming days that will fix the problem. Does this look good for Apple? No, It does not. Is this the end of the world as we know it? I'll let you answer this question for yourselves.

I also pre-ordered two iPhone 4s; not because I have to have the latest and greatest gadgets, but because my AT&T contract with unlimited data was expiring on November 8, and I needed to renew the contact so that not to lose my unlimited data plan. So, I figured I would get iPhone 4s for my wife and me to replace our iPhone 3GS. Both of my our iPhone 4s are still in their boxes unpacked. We are continuing to use our jailbroken and unlocked iPhones 3GS and waiting for an untethered jailbreak to come out for iPhone 4s. Now that we learned about the battery issues on iPhone 4s, we will wait until this issue is addressed by Apple and only then will we activate our iPhones 4s. So, thank you for finding this issue and testing it out for us - we really appreciate all of your effort and the misery you are going through right now. Perhaps next time you will be more patient if you have learned your lesson. Your impatience is not taking away from the fact that Apple screwed up again, and they had better get their act together. I'm saying this as an AAPL investor with hundreds of thousands of dollars in the Apple stock.

Went to complaint with the genius at the store and he said that's normal for 4s :( suggesting that iPhone 4s is new so the IOS may not quite optimized for it.  Very disappointed with their help on this issue.  I even turned off notification, 3G, wifi and locations just to take a benchmark and it drained 1% every 6 mins for just having the screen on. :(
