Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I did everything that everyone has said and after 4 an 1/2 hours of usage my phone has 25% battery life left. what the **** apple. I'm really considering returning this. I love the phone but this battery problem is a real issue I hope they find a fix and give 4s users an exchange or update. I really should have seen this coming.

Add me to the list.  Not sure if there is any useful advice in here - I don't have time to wade through 124 pages and growing of consistant complaints about the battery, but mine has equal at best battery life to my old 3GS, and I would estimate it is a bit worse.  I hope Apple is on this and releasing a patch soon.  Seems to be IOS5 related, since some of these posts are from iPhone 4 owners who experienced similar issues after upgrading the OS.  Come on Apple - first the antenna, and now this?

I opened my diagnostic logs and noticed hundreds of "awdd" reports referencing "com.okcupid.app" - the OkCupid app (don't laugh...).

I've deleted the offending app and will see if that remedies the situation.

Moral of my story: check your logs and see if there is one app that keeps crashing (I assume that's what the awdd report is).

I was having serious battery drain issues (10%/hour) with my Verizon 64GB 4S and it was always warm in my pocket.  I tried restoring and closing background apps etc but was having no luck, so I went on a long saga of toggling things on and off to see what was effecting it.

Happy to report I've gotten it to a state where it's now fine, so I think this is a software bug.  Here's what seemed to have effected it the most, strange as it may seem:

Turning calendar off in notification center: I noticed long calendar appointment titles were constantly wiggling in notification center.  I think this was causing the processor to constantly do work.  Sometimes I get a lock-screen calendar reminder where the time oscillates between absolute and relative times (i.e. at 2:00 / in 15 minutes).  When this happens the phone heats up again, but unlocking it fixes.

Turning location off for everything except Camera, Facebook, Maps, FB Messenger (my essentials).  I think Siri and other apps that use the background location services were causing the GPS to be active a lot more than necessary.  I noticed that even after exiting these apps the location icon would stay lit up.

I also turned off some non-essentials and still have them off (but it didn't seem to help as much): Ping, "System" location services, most notification center stuff (Weather, Omnifocus, Reminders, Game Center, Stock, Mail, Stitcher, Yelp), iCloud Photo Stream and Docs/Data, Spotlight, and Diagnostic/Usage data.

A few important functions I tried turning off that didn't help much, so I turned them back on: Mail/Calendar/Contacts/Find my phone, iMessages.

I still sometimes wake up to find my phone only at 93% when it's been charging all night, but that's not that big an issue.  My phone lasts 2 days on a charge now like my 3GS used to, so I'm happy.

My battery life is severe. I have had an iPhone from the first one, and never had anything like this. I work in a phone shop that sells these, and about 90% of customers are complaining about the battery life.

Last night at 11:30 my phone had 64% charge. This morning at 8:30 I had 3%. I haven't used the phone at all. But I have noticed that the usage had increased by 4 hours. Can not understand why when I was asleep and the phone was in standby.

At best I am getting 18 hours use, and this is not a heavy use out if the phone.

Have tried turning Bluetooth off, wireless off and location services off, but to no avail.

Hopefully Apple will come up with a fix.

I have been monitoring the drain in standby mode. at first, it was about 8% an hour. I did what others suggested and turned off the Siri "raise to speak" option. It then drained 16% in one hour of stand-by mode. There really seems to be no rhyme or reason for this. I made an appointment tomorrow at the Apple Store, I will likely request a new phone. These are my standby stats for this morning.

    30% @ 10:43 am

    22% @ 11:43 am

    6% @ 12:43 am

I had the similar issue with iPhone 4S 16GB Black.  I got it replaced from Appe for a new one.  First day I didnt install any applications, emails etc but still the battery life was pathetic.  So I went ahead and changed following settings:

Go to Settings ---> Location Services ---> System Services ---> Turn Off Diagnostics & Usage, Location Based iAds and Setting Time Zone.

After that I restarted the iPhone, installed all applications, emails.  Today is second day after the settings changed, its around 2.30 PM PST and the iPhone 4S 16GB Black battery life is at 86% which is excellent.  Earlier it used to be around 50% and by evening 7 PM it would be around 10% and would shut down automatically. As of second day I see a really good battery life after changing above mentioned settings.   Hopefully my iPhone 4S battery life issues are gone with these changes.  Hope this helps others too.

I've had my 4S for a week now. I have my share of issues and nothing will undo them. Today I woke up and as I was eating my bean sprouts and organic yogourt, aiming for sushi and important meetings in the afternoon I was thinking about this whole ordeal. I found it was such a lesson in humility for us Apple users. It used to be that when I went into a meeting for my business, people would get up to shake my hand and the first thing I would do is put my Iphone in their hands, so that they knew to whom they were talking to, so as to increase the oomph factor. Now it's a bit too hot to do that and I'm afraid they'll drop it down. But more seriously, now that I see that Apple hasn't even spoken out about acknowledging the problem and that some higher level users are lowering expectations saying that the 4S is a sub-48hrs device in any case, my vision of things has slightly changed.

Now I think about RIM, and how after all they're amazing, solving their BB infrastructure problem within 4 days, as they don't even manufacture the switch that was faulty, yet people want to sue. Here Apple manufactures the devices. And Lazardis came out and apologized openly. Even before that they had acknowledged the issue, reaching out to users. Here some higher level users have said that it may be that the 4S is simply not cut for all those notifications and apps and 3G working at the same time. I've come to the conclusion that our beloved device is a device like any other, and that it is not a gift from heaven and that Apple is just a normal business after all. I know people (I wouldn't call them friends anymore because now they use Android) who had issues with some phones, and the first thing they would do with battery issues is just change it... a very simple and cheap process... and if that and downgrading their firmware didn't cut it, they just sold their device on Ebay and bought another Android phone, some even from another manufacturer... they don't make a big deal about it or cling to it as if their world would collapse. They don't blame Exchange or app developers or need to shed some extra money to buy a system info app. And whatever the issue, be it with RIM/BB or Android, I've never heard any of them complain about call quality, quite the contrary. They also know that no one man can solve an issue, as problems are related to technical stuff and not "vision" so they don't call on for a savior to arise or speculate as to what if such and such person were still here etc. They're real, and inspiring...

So I've decided on the following resolutions, as Xmas is also coming around:

-I'll stop being condescending with Android and BB users - I'll be humble

-I'll stop expecting Apple to be something else than just another business around the block

-I'll stop speculating as to what would happen if Steve was still with us; kicking people in the face doesn't solve technical issues

-I'll stop lowering my standards as to how many functions can be up at the same time on my phone - I'll be uncompromising and if a device or OS doesn't cut it, I'll move on to another one

-I'll never compromise on call quality because after all this is a phone

-I'll shake hands with people instead of giving them my Iphone - there's more to my personality than my phone so I'll work on that instead - because I know so many people think I'm a *****. I want them to think different about me!

    Mea culpa.

I did full cycle charge (0-100%)with the app Battery Magic last week. This made a huge difference to my phone. 100% stays long time. But I am not satisfied yet though.

If you haven't done, worth trying.

THIS WORKED FOR ME! 32gb Verizon iPhone 4S

After reading the forums for 2 weeks and trying pretty much every combination...I finally found a solution that worked. A full restore did not help. Prior to this my phone was dropping over 10% per hour. It wouldn't last half a day with lite use. At times it was super hot even with no apps running in the background.

My battery was at 100% at ~1am last night. It's at 86% right now (about 10 hours later). I used it this morning to check email, twitter, web, stocks, and take a few pictures, etc..

    Usage: 56 Minutes

    Standby: 10 Hours, 6 Minutes

I believe the issue was my Calendar notification setting. I kept seeing the "calaccessd" process pop up in the Sytem Activity Monitor app i bought.

    Here are my current settings:

    ON in Notification Center:

    Phone - badges and alerts

    Messages - Badges and Banners

    ****

Calendar is NOT in notification center and I only have "View in Lock Screen" turned ON so I can still get alerts

    ****

    Wifi: ON

    Cellular Data: ON

Location Servies ON just for Maps, Siri,  Yelp, and Find my iPhone

iCloud ON just for Find my iPhone

Siri: ON, Raise to Speak OFF

Hope this helps someone out there!

    THIS WORKED FOR ME 2.

i turned off the calendat stuff in the notification center.

been watching it for 1 hour now. I've been getting in that hour something like 18 emails.

Everything else is on , Siri, Twitter, Wifi, 3G , etc.... nothing changed.

I lost during this hour now 3% battery charge.

Go ahead and try it ...

seems to have done the deal... will continue to report

Add me to the list as well. I lose 1-2% every half hour on standby. My old iPhone 3G had amazing battery life compared to this phone. I went to the apple store today to see if they could run diagnostics on my 4s and it showed only being able to only do 11 hours on standby! This is insane. I hope you guys figure this soon; I'd really like being able to use my phone for more than a couple of hours.

I have tried all the "fixes" mentioned in the various posts - altering location settings, turning off Bluetooth, notifications, you name it. I use my phone a lot, but this is my 4th model and I am at 75% by 10am! I love the 4S but I am quite disappointed with the battery life. It seems like I am draining at a fair pace even in standby! Thank goodness it charges quickly. Still, I am looking into an extra battery do I don't get stranded.

It's not just the iPhone 4S. My iPhone 4 has been experiencing this as well. After 2 hours and 37 minutes of use and 8 hours and 22 minutes of stand by I'm at 70%.

It has to be an iOS 5 issue.
