Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

There is a location services item for time zone. I shutbthatboff and my battery life got way better. The GPS radio is amig power sucker. Any use of location reminders while on battery will pull it quick. I noticed the time zone service left the location service in use icon on a lot. Unless you are changing time zones several times a day I would thing you could leave it off. I think the actual time gets updated from the carrier anyway.

As reported many times by many users this is not just a 4s problem, many many users including myself have had the same issue with the iPhone 4. I have partially cured the problem by turning of iCloud and diagnostic report sending but the battery life is not back to normal. I don't know why but even gizmodo is only reporting this as a 4s problem when clearly it is affecting the iPhone 4 as well.

the main issue is in iOS 5, look at my previous post, and you will see what is causing the battery lifes to drain more.

My Wifi was turning on and off (ping the iphone with a notebook to test) when in sleep mode.

Then I restore the phone to factory defaults with iCloud = off! Switch in Mail/Contact/Calendar --> Push=Off. Afterwards install all your Mail Accounts an Apps again. You will see that the phone will turn the wifi off after about 30 seconds.

Now use the settings above about location services. And: never touch the "push" option until there will be a fix.

    Hope that will help.

Marc - I made the Exchange/iCloud changes at 11AM when I was connected to a power source with a full charge. My phone hasn't charged since and I'm at 89% while using it for texting, some email and a few phone calls.  While I'd like to be able to use all the Exchange functionality, this is a good fix until Apple releases their fix.

Thanks for letting me know how that was working.

Here are some things that I've done that have significantly improved my battery performance:

    1. I went to location services and went to system services and turned status bar icon to on. I noticed it was always on and I turned off "compass calibration".

    2. I turned off showing calendar events from my exchange (gmail) server in the notification center.

    3. I turned off all push notifications for the time being (I don't really use them all that much).

    4. I do not use iCloud so that is off as well.

With a combination of these 4 things, I've noticed my battery life is much improved (actually almost as good as the iPhone 4 32GB that I had). I would highly suggest everyone do these things until Apple released an update to resolve this issue.

yea Debell got it, that was what I posed in my original posting, I can't believe apple added backgroud service and turned the status bar off so we wouldn't know our location was constantly being searched, that is messed up

I purchased my 4s about 2 weeks ago. I have noticed significantly less battery life then the 4 however on full charge over night it's not too bad. 100% and in 9 hours standby lost about 7% been using it for the last hour and a half an I'm down to 86%. I'm not terribly upset about the issue as I'm sure many of you are.. It isn't just a 4s issue my 4 drains a little quicker with ios 5 as well. It's pretty much what I expected.. Love the phone. If I can be of any assistance to anyone I'd be glad to help..

The location status bar is a good tip. I tried that ands also found that the time zone detection was holding on to the location service.

The OkC app has problems. I had to turn off location services for the app because it was ALWAYS using the GPS even when the app wasn't open. How does one access the logs?

I'm also a bit glad to hear that this isn't just my 4s. Hopefully, it's a software issue that can be fixed without having to return the phone.

After all of my previous posted changes I am finally achieving reasonable battery life, but with similar compromises as others have posted. I have zero push on mail accounts, both in primary and advanced settings. I also have all system service location off along with no icloud or imessage. I made it to nearly 2.5 days of standby with 6hrs usage ( i have approached 8hrs usage before with somewhat reduced standby times). Much of that was moderate use of music, mail checks, siri and with wifi and no 3g data. The performance is still below advertised runtime but I can live with this for now. the frustrating thing is that standby is still sucking power, albiet at a much lower 1% per one to two hours. Also, voice calls really drain the battery in full coverage (below the implied voice numbers advertised by Apple). I wonder how optimized things are with the dual CDMA and GSM chipset. I am hopeful to see some remedy, or worst case a phone replacement if hardware is the root cause.

I traded back my 4S for an Ipod Touch 32GB and with the refunded balance, I was able to afford a Galaxy S2.

It took some humility to get the best of both worlds!

    Good luck!
