Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

there is a option that constantly uses your location service without you knowing,

go to settings> location services> go to the bottom and go to system services> turn all off except leave cell network search, compass calibration and traffic on, and turn the status bar icon on, so you know when your location is being used

the location based iAds,and setting Time Zone are constantly using the GPS.

I noticed a HUGE battery life difference that is much better,

You might have something there. Why do we need cell network search on? I am only guessing so it can get a faster fix on a cell tower but unless you have the whole cell phone database in your phone what good would that do? Once you are on a cell tower the phone pretty much knows where it is.

    I noticed something else,

Why is it permantently connceted to WIFI. On my 4 it only connects to the WIFI when i turn the iPhone on , meaning when the screen goes on, cause it needs a sec to search for it...

Might that have something to do with it ?

Your time will get updated by the carrier but your calander will not. When you change time zones you want your calander to change as well otherwise you will be late or early for an apointment if you cross time zones.

While my iPhone 4s (Sprint) is in standby, it doesn't usually pull much power.  If I do ANYTHING on the phone, battery life goes down VERY fast.  Return kit is already on the way.  I can make my Android phone battery last longer than this.  If they ever get the battery issue fixed, I might jump back in, or just use some restraint, and wait until iPhone 5 has been out for a couple of months

Did you read any of the fixes for the problem here or did you just decide to be lazy and just return the phone. I have heard Android phones suck up much more power than iphones do so go ahead and go back to android. I bet you complained there too before you found ways to tweak your android phone.

My iphone 4s battery isn't lasting very long either. I tend to use alot of apps, wifi, texting and phone calls and I am having to charge my phone everyday. I believe my Iphone 3gs battery lasted longer than this.

Here are some top reasons for having short battery life on my iPhone 4.  I'm sure these apply to the 4s too.

    1.  Some buggy apps (google maps included) that use location services do not turn off GPS when you switch to another app.  GPS keeps running in the background.  Battery will totally drain in a few hours, nad the iPhone will get very hot.  You have to force quit those apps to fix the battery draining problem.  If you don't know which app, quit all apps that use location services.

    2.  When I'm not using wifi, and I'm in a cellular location with very weak signal, 1 bar, my battery will drain twice as fast.  Once when I was inside a midtown Manhattan building with signal strength ranging from no bars to 1 bar, the phone went from 90% to 20% in about 5 hours.  The (at&t) cellular signal was so weak that my friend wh tried to call me about 10 times that day only got through once, and the other calls didn't even register as missed-calls.

    3.  Occasionally I get alot of emails with huge attachments, like 10 MB pdf files.  Not knowing the size of the attachment, I try to download them while on the cellular network.  Battery drains fast while doing this, especially when the signal is only 1 or 2 bars.

    4.  When I get a new app, or discover a new feature, I use (play) with the iPhone alot more than usual, and guess what?  The battery drains much much faster than normal.  A few days latter after the novelty of the new app wears off the battery drains at the normal rate.

    Here is an update.

Ok I did some testing and here are my results. With 3G cellular data turned on this is what I get for results when I am at 70 percent.

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/ovdq0b

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/7jhiy8

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/nim8xj

These first 3 files show my results with cellular data turned on.

    47 min Usage at 90%

    1 hr 15 min Usage at 80%

    1 hr 41 min Usage at 70%

That is about 30 min average every 10%. The would equal only 5 hours of Usage for a full discharge. Probably less.

Now here it is with wifi on but cellular data turned off.

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/92gtb8

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/rli1io

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/tbhcd3

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/1j6wdb

Now I didn't turn off cellular data until about 93% so the first one will be off a little.

    48 min Usage at 90%

    1 hr 53 Min Usage at 80%

    3 hr 13 Min Usage at 70%

    4 ht 29 Min Usage at 60%

At this rate I should get about 11-12 hours of usage time out of my phone. That is double what it was when the 3G cellular data is enabled. I realize that 3G does use more power but even when you are on wifi with cellular data turned on it still drains just as fast as it does on 3G alone. My conclusion is there is probably a software problem with the 3G data that isn't letting the wifi take full control of the data when it has wifi.

Just to add I am now at 5 hr 35 min at 55% so doing really well right now. I also turned off the time location service and iad location as well.

Same here, new to iPhone (from Blackberry) and having to charge the phone 2x per day. Seems really inadequate battery - not a heavy user, mostly occasional phone calls and very light web and app usage. Run on my home wifi about 50% of the time. Any ideas on how to make it last longer?  I was getting 2-3 days between charges with my blackberry.

    Thanks

I'm having the same issue. I haven't quanitified it, but my 3GS just felt like it lasted longer than my 4S does. I've read that Apple's looking into it; it's just weird that the battery life has gone done for the first time that I've upgraded my iPhone since the original. What's going on?

I have read all 127 pages here.  I have tried every fix mentioned, full wipes, manual reloads, ping off, time zone off, reloaded email accounts, etc, etc, etc....and I even went to the Apple store to have a Genius take a look at it, who determined that all my settings were correct, and that the battery was functioning as it should.  He did say that Apple knows about the battery issue.

I am a computer tech by trade, know how to troubleshoot, and I am certainy not lazy.  Sprint gives me a whole 14 to decide if I want to keep the phone or not.  For $400, my phone should be 100%.  If it isn't working correctly, especially after all of my troubleshooting, it goes back.

Have you read most of the thread or just replied to the OP? Instead of adding more I am having the same issue read some of the fixes in this 1000+ thread and you might find something that fixes your problem. I found several as one I found on my own by investigating.

Well your post indicated otherwise. I find it hard to believe you read over 1000 posts on here. I haven't and I just scanned the last few pages and found the fixes that helped me out. Tech or not you should have not just posted what you did the first time.

At least you have 14 days, I bought mine at Best Buy and they give you a whopping 3 days to return it, and add in a nice 10% restocking fee if you do. Wish I wasn't in such a rush to get one..
