Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I thought it was just me. Mentioned this to an apple store employee and she gave me a boneheaded answer. My 3GS had battery this good after 2 years of use. Help Apple.

I unplug the charger in the morning, but don't use my phone at all... hop in the shower, get out, get dressed, look at my phone and the battery is at 92% already ... 20 minutes of no use at all and the battery has drained that much?!?!  What the heck?  WiFi is turned off, icloud is turned off, location crap is turned off and still ... DRAIN DRAIN DRAIN ... I'm sick of it.  I wish I hadn't made fun of my sister-in-law's Android for the crappy battery life because now her Android lasts longer than my iPhone 4S.  I never thought I'd say that but it's true ... In this aspect the Android is better ... what good is a really cool phone if you can only use it for a little while?

Same for my 4s, using it in Singapore and the battery life of the phone is worst than my iPhone 4. I can't even last 6 hours with it. Thanks to Randy4s, I've followed the instructions in the provided link to turn off 'setting time zone' and will see if that improves things a bit.

Otherwise, the 4s is still an epic iPhone! Come on Apple!! Do something!

I've tried every trick and setting on the forums and bulletin boards that are out there about this problem.  The tips make a marginal difference -- a little better, but nothing great.

The one thing that baffles me is that I certainly see my battery life decline MUCH FASTER when I actually use the device actively (in standby, I lose about 8-10% an hour).  For example, I spent 16 minutes on a phone call, and it dropped 10%!!!   Or, if I attempt to browse the web or use apps that connect to the network, it will drain about 1% every 2-3 minutes.  I understand that real usage should cause battery life to drop, but definitely not at this kind of alarming rate.

This leads me to wonder if there is a hardware problem or some other type of issue that isn't solved by settings alone.  Because, normal usage causes my battery to drop much more quickly than published specifications, and no usage causes it to drop similar to what other users who are struggling also report.

To anyone unhappy with their 4S, if you really want Apple to know how angry you are over this the ONLY way to show them is to return the phone. I do believe they'll get this fixed, but if you are limited on a return window, return the phone and go back to your previous phone (if you can). Get your upgrade back on your account and allow this to all blow over. Many people did this with the antenna issues.

YAY! (Kind of.) Yay in that I thought I was crazy. I've been searching for this.  I have to recharge daily and nightly...with everything off! No push. No wifi. No Bluetooth. I thought it was just me. Will a software patch fix this?

I have been disappointed for the last few days since receiving my first iPhone.  I was expecting better battery life than my BB Bold 9700 which lasted me more than 2 days of regular use.  Of course regular is relative to the user.  Naturally I am interacting with my new phone "slightly more" than regular at the moment.  I noticed my usage statistics did not seem to correlate with my actual usage.  Too much usage and not enough standby.  I downloaded an app to look at the CPU usage of my phone.  It was spiking regularly (every 5 - 10 seconds) to 10 - 15%.  No matter what was running.  I turned everything off.  Location Services, WiFi, cell data, push notifications.  I even removed my Lotus Notes Traveller account.  Still the same.  Then I went into Airplane mode.  Boom.  CPU usage down to 1 - 3% with an occasional spike to 5 - 10% but only for a second.  I then turned off Airplane mode and the CPU usage was similar.  I began turning everything back on 1 by 1.  Nothing seem to permanently affect my CPU usage.  Now it is normally between 1 - 3% with the occasional spike to 5 - 10% only for a second.  This is of course while simply watching the screen and doing nothing else.  Fully charged my battery to test.  Usage is 25 minutes with 1 hour and 4 minutes of standby which seems correct.  I just ticked down to 99% battery.  It think cycling Airplane mode did something.  Sounds wonky but that's what I experienced.

In a related story, my boss couldn't get his 4S to sync with his new Ford truck.  Sync would not show up in the Bluetooth list on the phone when pairing.  I gave it a shot.  Sure enough, the same thing happened when I tried.  I simply turned off and on Bluetooth, Sync showed up and paired immediately with full functionality.

Try it.  You have nothing to lose.

One issue I've encounted with any system monitor app is that you can't sort the processes by CPU %.  Makes it kinda tough to identify the guilty process that is sucking back your processor time and as a result, your battery as well.

Good luck everyone.  Hopefully there is a patch soon.

Much like many of the people google-ing the 4S battery problems, and stalking the Apple discussion boards for answers, I'm becoming tired of the fact that I feel the need to do something about the battery life of my second apple device ever. (first was the 1st generation nano in 2005) I'm becoming increasingly frustrated by the Inconveinience its causing me, and the way in which Apple seems to be 'handling' this situation. I dont know about anyone else... but it wouldnt kill them to make an online statement as to what they are up to in there.. i know its a big issue and they probably dont have time to do it and whatnot... but Jeez, I honestly think we deserve some inside knowledge as to how Apple is going about fixing this thing.

Ive been severly disappointed and feel a little bit hard done by, when all i can find is that some dude called some other dude, to put some app on some dudes phone to find whats been going on. I sense that they are doing something about it, but its been a while since i started looking for my own solutions and im getting sick of draining the battery, turn on and off notifications, turning on and off cell data, playing around with location settings, backing up, restoring, deleting... the list goes on.. And i think its about time that apple says something to reassure us that they are working on a fix, and not leaving us hanging by making us look for our own fixes (of which some are ridiculous: whats the point in having a phone with all these cool capabilities if all we can do to save the battery is turn them all off?)

I found that deleting the brand new fb app helped. But that was short lived after it again became increasingly hot. I also deleted find my friends, to no avail.

When i called apple customer service last week about it, i had already done all the troubleshooting they have lined up for us when we call about these issues, and when i did my full restore to factory settings and set up as a new phone, the only thing that changed about the phone, was my rather cool background and ringtones. They said if that didnt work that i should call them back and they will talk to me about sending it off and getting a replacement. But since discovering that ALOT of people are having this problem, i doubt this will fix anything.

Dear Apple. In memory of your once amazing leader Steve Jobs (R.I.P) please, PLEASE tell us where you are at in terms of providing your once extremely satisified customers with an answer to this lingering question.

Is avg of 1% drain every 10 min normal on minimal usage?

I've tried restoring my iphone from scratch, disable everything one by one, but sill get 1% drain every 10min with very minimal use. No games, just reading email, some light websurf.

Usage indicates I used the iphone 6 hours standby for 12 hours.

This doesn't make any sense however as I only had the phone off the charger for 12 hours.

So is more like 6 hour of usage and 6 hours of standby.  Apple seem to be inflating the standby hours as well, this makes thier battery life even worse than it seems!!!
