Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Turning off cellular data only turns off cellular based data (as noted; 3G, EDGE, GPRS, 1RXX).  WiFi still works.  Granted it is an inconvenience for many people without access to WiFi but if you have it, trying running with WiFi exclusively like on an iPod Touch and leave the 3G data off.  For me it seems to be working as I am not seeing the battery die prematurely.

I've come to the conclusion that whenever you buy anything when it first comes out, you're subject to problems and will have to WAIT UNTIL THERE'S A FIX...this is no different than the antenna issue with the iphone 4.  Now if Apple doesn't fix it, then we can COMPLAIN.  Come on folks, this isn't a life or death issue!  IF you can't deal with it then return it and be done.  I'm going to be patient and give Apple a chance...all this complalining isn't doing a darn thing so get a LIFE or move to another smart phone.

Pammy, that is a very contescending and narrow minded response to many of us who are trying to escalate a very relevant issue that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. When consumers are spending up to £700 for a phone, you would expect it to live up to the specifications that are advertised, i.e. the battery hours listed. We all use are phones on a daily basis and nowadays it is more than just a phone and practically a personal computer that we use for business as well as personal lives. I would encourage everyone to report their issues and any solutions or improvements they have discovered. It's actually comments like yours that do not help anybody here and telling people to get a life is quite frankly just pathetic.

Are you absolutely sure it's the hardware, then? Probably is software. Pammy's comment to stop raging is rational enough, but you are both correct; you should get something from your money, but give Apple some room to breathe!. Please don't get hysterical, you can get angry, but I think this whole thing is a little overestimated. We all do want to fix it, but everyone doesn't have to come like a bombin the forum.

I had the same problem, even when i turned off everything which defeats the purpose of a smartphone. Returned it, was on android for a week, back to the 4s. New phone with everything turned on is awsome battery life. The only difference on set up was there is no option to use google contacts, engineers must have removed it due to the recent problems. Delete your gmail account then add it again, without google contacts. That should fix it.

    I noticed the same!

When I woke up this morning it said my Iphone had been in use for 10 hours out of 14. Even though I was asleep for 8 of them.

APPLE ARE YOU READING THIS!? It ***** that we are the only ones who appear to be trying to find a solution.

What do you mean no option for Google contacts? I was only aware of one way to sync your Google contacts and that was through setting up an Exchange server for Gmail.

To fix the issue, go to Settings > General > Location Services > System Services and disable "Setting Time Zone".

2 things I turned off on my phone were in the settings menu

iCloud->Documents & Settings-> Use Cellular (turned off) (other iCloud settings as follows Mail-off, Contacts-off, calandars, reminders, bookmarks ON, notes and photostream off, Documents and data se tto WIFI ONLY, find my iphone on.

Settings->General->Restrictions->turn restrictions on, then scroll down and turn off "Ping"

I had location based services on, however before I went to sleep I checked to see if any were being used and none were at the time.

Once I did that I noticed a slight increase in battery life.  2 things to note, if you use the itunes ping service, you wont be able to unless you turn Ping back on.  Also, if iCloud is using an app such as pages to update a document, it wont sync until you connect to wifi.  Before when I had these turned on I'd notice a significant drop in battery even when not using the phone.

I was going to post this response last night but figured I'd wait till morning to provide real numbers.  Note this is for standby only and I live in an area with 5 bars.  At 9:30 last night, I had 80% battery life.  Its now 8:45 am and there was a 4% drop in battery to 76%.  This is much closer to what I was getting on my iPhone 4.  The previous evening I woke up with a 10% loss in battery life with those settings on.  Personally, I think its the constant iCloud backup going on whenever you run compatible programs thats sucking the battery dry.

One last note, given I was home but I did NOT have wifi turned on. If I had, then iCloud would have been backing up documents, etc from my phone because that is how I have it set up.  I did accidentally leave bluetooth on though and the phone wasnt connected to anything and still only had a 4% drop in battery life.

I know my post doesnt address battery issues when USING the phone, but for those of us who have had terrible standby numbers, hopefully this helps.

I heard that it might be a problem with imported contacts from iCloud or Google and that they end up being corrupted. I will actually do the following now: I saved my contacts to pdf, deleted them off iCloud and now I will restore my 4S and set it up as a new phone and type the contacts in manually.

I will report back if I see a difference in battery life. Last night when it was only running Mail, Safari, Setting, Alarm and Twitter in background with one email and one tweet coming in I dropped 25-30% over night.

But I also have to say that my 4S is brand new, got it replaced after the other one had bad case of crackling noises. So my battery is not to 100% yet as I didn't do the 5 charge cycles.

I'll keep you updated if my contact thing does help.
