Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    Hi Everyone

I experienced fast battery drops as well on the first day I started using the 4s.

If u have exchange mail configured.

    1) Go to settings

    2) Mail, contacts, calendars

    3) select the mail configured in exchange mode

    4) turn off the calendar feature inside

This has cooled up on the battery kill for me.

Note When I backed up and restored my iPhone 4 to the 4s I had 2 instances of my exchange mail running.

I hence had like 50 unread mail in each instance and it showed 100 unread mail as a badge on the mail.

I also went into settings and removed one of the duplicates.

I will confirm this in an hour from now.

whe have cool features but must be OFF  , dont know ANDROID phones with these features are good in batteries

I wonder how two instances of my exchange (gmail) got created.

Either that or turning of the calendar under exchange ( settings -> mail, contacts -> the exchange mail -> turn off calendar ) has gotten the battery life back to normal.

    All,

    Currently, there is no fix.

I have had the issue from day one. I have done everything from turning off notifications, location services (include the time zone) and ping. Wifi and Bluetooth have been turned off and I have even swapped my phone for a brand new one in the Apple Store after having a argument with the manager.

None of these things work. I still have the original issue and I think everyone is jumping on the band wagon there is a magical fix, at the moment, there isn't.

I unplugged my phone today at 0900. I used it for 4 hours (light usage) with 7 hours standby and it is at 38%. It's terrible.

My advise to ANYONE thinking of getting the 4S is to hold off until this is resolved.

    Battery life problems---hummm,

    now for the bomb shell.

Apple has produced a dual network phone, gsm & cdma.

All cell phones constantly scan(search) for connection to the network for which they are designed.

If the phone does not connect it will continue to scan until it does.

This will use up battery life in a hurry and the phone gets warm to the touch. If you have had a "No Service" experience you will know this.

What is going on, the phone connects to the network authorized , GSM -ATT or CDMA-Verizon/Sprint.

The phone is opperating on that network but is still scanning for authorized connection to the other network.

It cannot connect like it has "No Service" , though not displayed, and battery life suffers big time.

The tips given here help and do tie into this looping but are not the root cause. Hopefully it is a software issue and not a hardware one in which the other network scanning is turned off when the authorized one is connected.

As of today, is your batter life still ok?  Do you have to copy wifi settings or just by following your procedure will the phone restore normally without having to put any codes or passwords back again.  Currently my 4s is just sucking out the battery life very quickly.

Just adding to the battyery woes that pretty much everyone else is having.

Even with all my notifications, locations, icloud, data services (3G) and timezone all turned off, my battery still drains like crazy. I've tried draining my battery till it dies and then fully charging to 100% and it has made little difference.

Today I charged my phone to 100% and with in an hour it had dropped to 87% with it just sitting in my pocket doing nothing.

Please Apple, sort this out soon!

I was among the first few to obtain the iPhone 4S, after I fully charges it overnight(4+ hours), the first thing I noticed was how fast the battery percentage goes down once I have it unplugged. On standby, the battery goes down by about 1% every 5 minutes, that works out to about 85 hours of standby time, much less than the 200 claimed by Apple(I gauged this over a 48 hour period after a couple full recharges). It was going down so scaringly fast, I took it to the Apple store to have it replaced(none in stock btw), the Genius guy ran some battery diagnostics on a wifi networked suite and claimed my battery is fine and it could've been my usage habit(Right! I know when something is wrong with my iPhone battery!). Back then I scorched the net for related issues by other early adopters but found none but now I know I'm not alone on this. Luckily the Apple guy promise to replace it with a brand new as soon as they get stock. Since then, my iPhone 4S battery life have improved a little after several recharges which leads me to believe it could be a combination of issues including 'battery calibration', it seems like some iPhone 4S have an improperly calibrated battery which results in the percentage not being displayed accurately which could exaggerate whatever other issues that is affecting the battery life in the 4S. To properly calibrate the battery management profile, fully charges the iPhone(plus some) then completely discharges it, wait 2 hours then recharges it fully again(not using it in the process, put it on Airplane mode if you can). I'll update after trying out the new replacement, something tells me it won't make much difference if this is a broad scale 4S issue.

I've been following this thread for a while now as I too have issues with the battery life on my new 4s.

I have tried many things some of which appear to work for a short while and some that simply don't appear to make a difference (apart from one - read on)...

Here is what I have tried and the result:-

    1. Setup the 4s from scratch and didnt restore from iPhone 4 backup - this appear to be good for a about one day and then seemed to go back to being rubbish battery life.. No idea why???

    2. Reset network settings - made no difference

    3. Reset all settings - made no difference

    4. Turned off the time zone under location services - still monitoring this one but I dont feel it made a big difference

    5. Change iCloud documents and data to not "use mobile" - not seen any major difference.. Still monitoring...

    6. Turned off iCloud contacts - made no difference

    7. Turned off calendar notification - see below

    8. Turned off Mobile Data (relying on wifi) - see below

So as it stands I a currently running with 7 and 8 turned off.  The result is nothing but OUTSTANDING.  I turned them both off last night at 11:30pm and put my almost flat phone on charge.  I then woke at 3am for some reason and checked my phone. It was at 100% charge so I took it off and went back to sleep and woke at 0900 where it was at an outstanding 99% still.

I have then monitored this through out the day and as a write this, here is my usage:-

    Charge: 72%

    Usage: 3 hr 5 mins

    Standby: 15 hr 38 mins

Avg per hour battery consumption: 1.73%

Previous to this change my avg per hour battery consumption was: 6.5%

Obviously when I go work tomorrow I may have to re enable mobile data but at least I know how to stop the rapid drain.

I hope apple read this.. Also interested in your feedback and results.

Yes turning off mobile data while on wifi made a huge difference for me. Noticed the phone would also get hot on 3G sometimes.

Usage with 15% left and mobile data off:

    5.5 hours usage

    1 day 3 hours standby

I was getting about half the standby time before.

Right now I'm sitting in my livingroom ... My iPhone 4 has 3 bars 3G ... when I move the sim card to my iPhone 4S, signal is now 1-2 bars EDGE!!! Wot?? Some times it even can't connect to cell network. HMMMM.

When I lay my iPhone 4 at on the table (I have a subwoofer beneath the table) everything is fine, but when I lay my iPhone 4S on the table, all **** breaks loose and the subwoofer is making all kinda noice.

My guess is, that my new iPhone 4S tries so hard every second to get onto the 3G network, that it drains the battery.

    Sigh!!!

You're quite undeserving of this epic phone. Stop behaving like little girlies because it's bad for the company. Love your phone and learn to use it without all the bells and whistles because that's no big deal - you can still make calls. No one at Apple ever even said there's a problem and it's been 15+ days, and that's just 9 more days than it took RIM to solve their issue... you just use your phone too much... this will help you all from turning into hunchbacks because you bend your head down all the time - have you looked at how straight is your back recently instead of thinking about your notifications? Apple will just roll out a patch and you'll forget that this ever happened and you'll be filled with love. Use your phone more in a stoic way, with only Apple apps and technologies. Be patient and loving. Apple loves you. A fix is coming soon.
