    I took my one week old 4s to work today at 10:05am with 100% battery.


    I downloaded 6 e-mails, sent and received half a dozen texts, took a 21 minute call and I had 10% battery left by 2pm.


    I have followed everyone's tips and various things are turned off as advised including calendar alerts.


    WIth my 4 I would easily get a full day's work usage including e-mails, web surfing, calls, texts and taking photos.


    Apple have given me the rather tired party line of a full charging cycle.  Yes ... I understand that ... it doesn't help.


    Adding insult to injury after the nightmare that was the OS5 install.

    It appears draining the battery completely - twice (until you get that black screen showing a plug in) helped. I mostly text and check email with it (and the occasional call).


    Are those good numbers? or am I just happy that I can go for 2 days without charging it.

    That is probably a little low for that usage.  On my iphone 4 I get about 5.5 hours of usage with about 15% remaining. The 4s has a bigger battery but more powerful hardware.  Try to close muti task apps every now and then. Double tap home button and close all of those apps. This helped a friend of mine with that phone.

    I upgraded to IOS 5 on my iPhone 4 and I'm seeing the same kind of severe battery drain that my wife is seeing on her 4S. It seems to me that this is not really a 4S issue but an IOS5 issue. Before I upgraded to IOS5 the battery life on my iPhone 4 was fine - it would last all day with reasonably heavy use. Now it's lasting for about 4 hours with a similar pattern of use.


    I know there's a lot of new goodies in IOS5 such as iCloud and WiFi sync etc etc which could cause battery life to be a little bit lower, but there's clearly a big issue (or set of issues) causing this significant issue. I'm guessing (and hoping) Apple will work it out soon...

    Maybe on some. My problem was directly related to Push/Exchange.

    Return it and get a new one. It does take a few full charges to get the max out of a lithium battery.

    I have turned off a lot of the background applications that people suggested, keep closing down simultaneously running apps, and still my battery *****. I have to charge it at least 2 or 3 times a day. I am a medium user, but it really drains battery even when I'm not using it. I have been sitting with my phone next to me and maybe hitting the home button to check the time a few times and it went from 67% to 47% in a little over an hour.


    This is not ok. I'll read through these posts more carefully to try to find more fixes, but mostly posting to add to the thousands of users not pleased about this, hoping apple hears.

    I took mineback today and exchanged it.  In my case, not only did I get poor battery life, but the screen was noticeably yellow when compared to display units.


    I exchanged it and the new one has a display that looks fine - we will see about battery life.

    Mellystew, if you have exchange mail that's using push, you could try setting that to fetch/15. That worked for me. Something in the push -- whether it's the iOS or something from my server -- was absolutely killing the battery, making it so it was dead in 6 hours with basically no usage.

    I bought mine in Sydney because we do not have the 4s in New Zealand yet.  So returning to the store not an easy option.    On a brighter note, my display isn't yellow!

    Have you tried the full reset? That seems to have done the trick for me. A fair amount of work to restore email accounts, etc (if you have multiple), but otherwise not too bad - and well worth the effort given the battery gains.

    Thanks vlapira! I had no idea that my mail was set to push as my iphone 3Gs wasn't, so I put it on manual. Fingers crossed!

    I have had my new iPhone 4S for three weeks, but I'm burning thru 25-30% of my battery an hour. Granted I'm streaming Internet Radio, but still even my old iPhone 4 didn't blow thru this quick. Even when I'm just using it to surf the web etc it still burns thru 20% an hour. I've tried various tricks but they all don't seem to help. I'm averaging only 4 hours of battery life. This is ridiculous. Apple please help.

    My iPhone 4 has the same problem starting with iOS5.  I've tracked it down to dataccessd crashing in a continuous loop.  I can temporarily fix it by turning on airplane mode for about 1 minute.  Somehow that causes dataccessd to stop crashing for about 8 hours.  Then the cycle starts again.  Both my phone and my wife's phone have the same problem, and this "fix" works for both phones.


    Details below:

    1) Using System Status (app store) I was able to look at error/warning message log from the phone.  So when the phone starts to spontaneously get hot, or the battery starts plummetting for no reason, I looked in the system log and saw it filled with error messages from dataaccessd.  When the phone is operating normally, there are no messages from dataaccessd.


    2) I'm guessing dataaccessd syncs data with a server somewhere.  So I turn on airlplane mode so that the phone has no internet access, and try to force dataaccessd to error out in a less damaging way.


    3) Now when I check the system log, I get "normal" messages and no more dataaccessd errors.  So I turn off airplane mode and discover that dataaccessd continues to behave sanely.  (no error messages)


    4) About 8 hours later my phone gets hot again and I toggle airplane mode which fixes it.


    This isn't a great workaround, but at least my iPhone 4 can last through one day again.  On iOS4 it was going 2.5 days.

    I kept seeing the "calaccessd" process consume my system resources. Removing Calendars from the Notification Center but leaving the "View in Locked Screen" fixed my battery drain issue. This is the "System Activity Monitor" app by Recession Apps.


    I went from having to charge my phone 3x day to less than once a day now even with 2-3hrs of usage.


    I'm currently at 63% with 2 hrs usage and 14 hours standby.
