Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Good idea.  I tried that and found that after about 15 minutes of standby mode,  4 1/2 minutes of usage was recorded.  I'll do a full restore as a new phone.

Turning off the time zone setting did nothing for me, I changed it to off and just let the phone sit for 15 minutes and I checked it was down to 97%... I am trying what another user suggested and resetting the ios and rearranging the push settings now. This would usually annoy me having to refresh for updates but I come from a long line of android phones and they all required me to automatically fetch data so that I could get "decent" battery life. I'll let you guys know how this works out.

Its all to do with cell towers and where you are, I gets trapped in a loop of connecting to deferent cell towers to find the best reception for itself, thats why its only happening to certain people. Im sure a fix will be along soon just recharge its not your battery its a cell bug, once its fixed it will be cool and life will go on.

There's a parallel thread on this subject.

To paraphrase one suggestion, go into   SETTINGS/GENERAL/USAGE and note down the usage and standby time (write it down).  Shut down the phone by holding down the top button for more than 5 seconds, then swiping the off slider.  Wait 10 seconds or so.  Turn it back on by holding the top button again for more than 5 seconds.  When it comes up, immediately put it in standby mode and wait 10 minutes.  Wake it back up, go back into SETTINGS/GENERAL/USAGE, then note if there is a change in usage and standby time.

If there is, you have a rogue operation going on, and the suggestion is to go to a factory reset as a new phone, then reconstruct manually.

Usefull perhaps to adjust these settings, but in my opinion this should not be necessary.

Why are these options in IOS if can't use them properly? Hope Apple fixes this battery problem soon.

I did the following, restored iphone 4s to new phone then manually set all e-mail configuration ( with push or fetch every half hour, just when I had this with my old 3G which had a better battery life then the 4S) etc.

Drained battery to 8% then fully charged it. At end of the day 100%, went to bed, following morning 96%.

I was very happy thought I solved it.

But during the day unfortunately my battery drained again. Just few calls, so Wordfeud, Whatsapp and few mails.

    battery is now at 17%.

And also, my phone went dead for about 15minutes. Came back to my desk when te phone was totally turned off. Aftwer 15 min or so try to turn it on YES he did it again. Very strange.

I have the same problem with iphone 3 since u/g to IOS 5.

Turn off loaction services and it's better!

Maybe a problem with location services on IOS 5? Is it constantly checking location?

I liked the battery of my 3GS and Classic iPhone. They started to get a weak beattery after 2-3 years using it every day.My new 4s battery is weak since the first day I used it.

But in the past, wasn't there a problem with iOS 4.2.1 and than Apple gave us iOS 4.3 and everything was okay!?

So why, there isn't an update like iOS 5.0.1 or something else?

    Waiting for an Update.

Can we please define what "normal" battery life for the 4s should be? Is it really 200 hours of standby OR 6 hours of 3G internet OR 8h talk time OR 10 hr wifi? Is it less than that in actuality? I'd like to compare with someone who does not have the battery issue... because some people on here are scratching their heads at losing 5% on standby - but shouldn't that be normal, given a 0.5% "normal" drain per hour of standby? I'm assuming that apple didn't mean "200 hours of standby plus 6 hours of internet plus another 10 hrs of wifi plus another 8 hours of talk time" that would make the phones last an incredible amount of time...

I lose about 10-15% of battery life per hor on my iPhone 4S with 4 bars of signal strength, WiFi, Notifications off, and Time Zone Locations off.  No activity, etc.

Also, my 3G signal keeps on dropping to Edge.  Reception is much worse than my iPhone 4 with iOS 4.

Jobs must be rolling in his grave...

A quick update. I had the same battery issue (down 12% per hour on standby). After turning off Exchange (returning gmail to Fetch) and location based notifications (I kept GPS in for running and driving) on my iphone 4S, the battery performance improved DRAMATICALLY. It's been 3 hours, and the indicator shows 98%. Try it!

This is getting ridiculous. I tried most of the fixes online (turning off location services, fetching mail, etc), and yet.....look at this! My battery's at 22% after using it for 3-4 hours?!

Yeah I just re-enabled Exchange but with just my Calendar & Reminders, as I think having all of my folders sync'd even on Fetch was still draining the battery.  I'll see how I end up by the end of the day.  So far I'm at 91% with 40 minutes usage time and 3 hours 32 minutes standby.  MUCH better than before!
