Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

the theory on sim cards only really would apply to those who have a carrier that uses them.  my wifes iphone 4 does not have a sim card because sprint does not use them.  only option we havent tried is a full restore.  myy wife would rather wait for a proper update though but right now im not feeling very confidenti bout that even happening as apple has yet to even acknowledge there is an issue.

Actually my sprint 4s has a sim card in it. When I pop it out the phone displays the no sim card message but is still connected to the sprint network. I am assuming they have it there as a placeholder for a real sim card later on.

Also I noticed that in settings>about>Diagnostic and usage I had Automatically send checked. I looked at the diagnostic and usage data tab and there was a ton of files in there and I have only had the phone for 5 days now. Wondering if these files are trying to be sent to apples servers and if they are getting swamped they keep retrying til they get through. I checked don't send and my phone seems to last a little longer now. Just a thought because I don't know when this data is supposed to be sent.

You shouldn't have to turn off the iCloud though.  And even if it's on it doesn't explain why my phone dies so much faster than my sisters when we have the same phone and pretty much the same settings.  When I got home from work I was at 50 something and she was at 80 something.

I feel my iPhone4S's battery life is terrible. Its draining out 5% at every 10 mins, just inactive with screen on.

    Here are the screenshots :

    - No activity, just watching !

    - No music / call running

    - Wi-fi on but no activity

I'm charging it throughout the day ..   ...

I have some useful data and would like some input. It's on page 17 so who ever wants to comment please do so.

I don't know why I never thought of this but here's one trick Apple knows that may or may not have let us in on. One way to extend your battery is by turning off "Ask to Join Networks." By turning this off your iDevice isn't always looking around trying to establish a connection. Theoretically it makes sense so lets see how it holds up in the real world. However, I'm still expecting Apple to release some sort of update/remark soon. This Battery issue is a bit rediculous.

EDIT: Does anyone know what "Cell Network Search" is under location services/system services? I have it on but is it really neccessary?

after upgrading to ios5 my iphone 4 battery life went dramtically down. then i tryed a lot but finally resolved the problem with removing exchange account and reconfiguring it. now battery life is in deed even better than before upgrade.

Last night I took the drastic step of doing a factory reset to restore as a new phone.  I've now added back on all my apps, email, exchange etc.  Got all my settings back to how they were before the reset.  The battery now seems better, though still not quite what my iphone 4 was pre-ios5.  Overnight the went down 9% in 8 hours.  Previously I'd have expected about 2-3% - however this is still a big improvement over how it was when I restored from a backup when I was losing 40% a night.

If anyone has bad battery life and restored from a backup - perhaps it would be worth trying restoring as a new phone.  If no joy you can always restore again from your backup.

Ok so I left the old SIM in the phone overnight. It burnt through 22% in 6.5 hours! Previously with the new SIM in and the exact same settings, it wasn't even using 1% per hour.

This is defineately a problem that I'm experiencing. That doesn't mean that this is the fix, I still think there is another problem in the software somewhere.

I've just removed the SIM Card, Reset Network Settings, Shut the phone down. Waited 1 Minute. Put the SIM back in, powered the phone back on and re-entered the Wifi information. I'm now monitoring battery usage again.

    Keep you posted.

After an hour with the new SIM card inserted it's back to dropping 1% in an hour. So I think there is a problem with my old SIM.

Just to tell you - if you are despairing of your new 4S - that happy endings are possible with this battery saga.

For the first two days with my new phone I could literally watch the percentage fall 1% a minute. Overnight I was losing 60%+ just on standby. I was about to return the phone as faulty.

I tried all the solutions posted on these various threads, including: removing then restoring Exchange mails, resetting network settings, switching icloud off and on, stopping wifi sync, removing unnecessary location things (like Timezone), Bluetooth off, turning restrictions on for Ping, restoring as a new phone rather than from a back-up, running the battery down to zero and then charging etc.

So I don't know which of these made a difference - but something worked. Last night overnight I lost 2% on standby. The phone sings and dances and loses charge at an entirely acceptable rate. It has been on - and happily doing stuff - for more than 24 hours now. Everything that I want is switched "on" again.

So don't give up. It isn't a hardware fault. It somewhere there in those settings and emails.  Just ... it would be nice to know where exactly ...

... and why this was not sorted out before  release, rather than making so many people tear their hair out and waste hours seeking solutions.

I totally agree with this last post.  I did have terrible first two days of battery, after couple calibration my battery seams better, not an iPhone 4 performance, but much better.

This is my last usage details:

    Re: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

Gang here is my update usage after the second full calibration:

    Usage: 6:10

    Standby: 1 day, 3 hours

Data: sent 12.2mb and received 91.2mb

    Call time: 55minutes

I put it to charge at 11:45am and at 1:45pm it was 100% charged.

I had at least 7:30 hours of usage on my iPhone 4 doing the same things I do with the 4S. Also, I did not turn anything off. Mail is set at fetch, iclould is on, weather is using location and clock is using location.

Is this a normal usage for this new iPhone 4S?

    Thanks,

    M

I seem to have fixed  my battery problems which were worse than my old 3G... I don't know what it was that actually fixed things, but I did the following:

    Turn off Documents iCloud syncing

Turn off Location Services I don't need (and System Services > turn off everything
Turn off notifications I don't need

Push email but Manual iCloud of Calendars, Contacts and Reminders. (They don't need to be Push because u only see them when you go into the app anyway)

Turn off automatic set of time in the Date and Time settings

    DId a hard reset

Still have Wifi on and Push email for one account. I am allowing lots of apps (but not all) to know my location and note that I restored from iTunes from old phone.

I think it was the hard reset that did it. You hold the LOCK and HOME BUTTON for 10 secs till it turns off.

I agree we shouldn't have to turn things OFF, but for now until Apple resolve it, it will do. Been on 100% for about an hour, whereas before I was losing 10-20 per cent every half hour.

I just switched on iCloud with all services (including find my iPhone, Photostream and Documents & Data sync) running and the phone only lost 1% in 45 minutes! As per my previous post all location services on, as well as Siri, fetch data every 30 minutes and an exchange account is running. I was expecting a much higher usage in 45 minutes to be honest.

The only thing that has tripled my standyby battery life is switching SIM cards and Resetting the Network Settings.

    I'll do more tests.
