Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

It has to be done in iTunes.

Have a look at http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/ios_5_iphone_ipad_wi-fi_syncing/ but uncheck the setting and then click Apply.

Thanks! Ill go home and try. It might be the problem as the place i purchased the phone from might have used it to load in my contacts from my old phone.

When i go under wifi iphone sync, it states sync will resume when i return to the shop next. That should be the problem yes?

So i should sync it to my home pc (which i have not done) and then turn it off from the itunes yes?

    Thanks for the help

I've had a thought. After following this thread and reading almsot every message, it seems that certain factors keep cropping up:

    • Many people say they get 'some' improvement by disabling location services, exchange emails etc
    • Most people are saying that many improvements in battery life are temporary
    • Plenty of people say that the battery does not charge to 100%
    • A lot of people (inc. me) have noticed how quickly their 4s's are charging

So, I am wondering if there is a software problem that is showing the battery as being 100% charged when it may only be, say, 70% charged?

If this were the case, it would explain the very fast charging time and also the accelerated discharge time. If your battery is only 70% charged, but showing 100% charged, then the decrease from 100% will be (falsely) very much increased.

Also, if it is an issue with the battery not charging, then all of the other suggestions people are trying to save battery life, would help, but would not solve the underlying issue.

Finally, I read a post on here where someone was told by Apple to do TWO full 16 hour charge cycles. Now is this what will fully 'calibrate' the battery and fix the issue?

Just my thoughts and I'm probably grabbing at straws but on the face it, thre could be some logic behind it. As long as Apple resolve this issue, I'll be happy, whatever the cause.

I'll throw my issues into the ring...  Everything is good unless I turn bluetooth on, then all bets are off.  While I realize that bluetooth is a battery drainer, it was no where NEAR this on my 3Gs.  I could function all day long on that device and still be OK battery-wise.

Perhaps with the introduction of iOS 5, something else is up.  But I went to bed last night, wi-fi off, most location services off, with bluetooth on and 70% battery and woke up 7 hours later to a dead iPhone.

Syncing your phone with your own PC is always a better option than with the stores computer. =)

Especially if you want your own music and media on it.

If this should solve your problem - I'm not saying it will, just that it seems to have worked on my phone - you'll have to sync with the usb-cable until Apple fixes this with an iOS update.

Ok, my 4S is now working completely as expected.

I'm not sure which step did it in the end, so I'll just repeat my experience.

    FIRST ATTEMPT:

I did the 'recovery mode' restore first. After which I started from scratch and disabled the often mentioned notifications and location services that seem to cause trouble.

After that I did a full discharge and charge of the phone.

That made a huge difference. The phone still discharged too quickly but it was A LOT better than before, especially when actually using it (as opposed to it being on standby during the night)

    SECOND ATTEMPT:

And this is where the magic probably happened.

I did a 'restore settings' (which doesn't wipe the phone), disabled the usual notifications and location services again.

I then used 'Battery Doctor' to do a charge with trickle charge.

    Went to bed, phone 100%.

    Woke up, phone 98%

4hrs later with moderate use (email, texting) but lot's of driving (so network searching)

    Phone 93%

I've noticed I'm getting a heavy battery discharge using Skype on the 4S, where on the 4 it wasn't much of a problem.

Siri - on (but not lift)

    Bluetooth - off

    Wifi - on

    Push - 1 hotmail

    Fetch - 1 gmail (every 15m)

    Notifications on for 5 apps

The only real difference between the settings on my 4 and the 4S are the notifications + siri. Overnight I would get a small drain when not plugged in (2-4%), but today I've used 1h17m since last charge, and I'm on 80% now, plus 4h3m standby. This is really poor.

I've done 2 full decharges, a factory reset, removed mailboxes. Non have made any difference so far. I will try again today with no notifications/siri on so it matches the 4, but if that doesn't help I'm guessing it's an iOS5 thing.

My 4S has just lost 10 percent in 3 hours of standby battery power. 've Tried everything, time zone off, restoration etc. But first it worse, there was time of standby and time of use allways the same. Where is a new update?

I had this problem from the day I got my iphone 4S, I have tried everything that was suggested on the web, even did not use at all the phone for a few days and all the same it only last a day really without using ANYTHING, come on Apple sort yourself out or I want my money back.

I live in Berlin Germany, and got my 2nd exchange phone, same problems.

I did ALL Tips postet here.

The size of consumption is with me, because of the constant switching on and off the 3g

At work I have a very bad 3g signal. Look at my horrible stats.

btw. both phones got same serial no. ending with DTD2, also se exchange one. Called apple again today for 3nd echange... the one know has also a loose home button.

Guys its all about the NOT SWITCHING OFF MANUALLY 3G SETTING, which is the most power drainer!
