I am having the same problem with my iPhone 4 running iOS 5.
Here are my specs:
- 32 GB iPhone 4 running iOS 5 (5.0 9A334)
- AT&T user (Carrier AT&T 11.0)
- Model: MC610LL
- Modem firmware: 04.11.08
Problem Summary:
My iPhone 4's battery life is consierably worse than it was when it was running iOS 4.x. It's going from 100% to <20% battery life in as few as 4 hours. I'm outside of the hardware warranty, but since the issue only started when I upgraded to iOS 5, I'm hoping it's only a software issue.
Attempted Resolution Steps:
Here's what I've tried so far to isolate the problem, with no success.
- Disabled Wi-Fi sync and left it disabled throughout the rest of the tests listed below. It had no impact on extending the life of the battery.
- Disabling bluetooth -- had no disernable impact (fully charged battery hit the 20% mark at around 4:19 of running in standby)
- Disabling Wi-Fi -- had no disernable impact (fully charged battery hit the 20% mark at around 4:27 of running in standby)
- Disabling bluetooth and Wi-Fi -- had no disernable impact (fully charged battery hit the 20% mark at around 4:48 of running in standby)
- Disabling location services -- had no disernable impact (fully charged battery hit the 20% mark at around 5:21 of running in standby)
- Running the phone in airplane mode with Wi-Fi disabled -- (fully charged battery hit the 20% mark at around 5:32 of running in standby, though it's not very functional in this state so it's not a very viable solution, to squeeze out only an incremential increase in performance)
- Restored the phone and then applied backup -- had no disernable impact (fully charged battery hit the 20% mark at around 4:03 of running in standby)
- Restored the phone and reinstalled as if it was a new device -- manually added apps, content, etc. -- had not disernable impact on battery life, but took quite a while. I'm still sitting around 4:15 minutes before a fully-charged battery hits the 20% mark and it's only downhill from there.
If anyone from Apple or on the forums have any suggestions on next steps for troubleshooting, I'd love to know. As of now, I'm just wandering around with a dock connector cable and wall charger, hoping to find a power outlet wherever I go.
During the four hours, I didn't do anything with the phone -- I left it in standby, though I did receive an occasional message.
After all the troubleshooting, I've found a solution to this issue. This has worked for me, so I wanted to share it with everyone else to see if it could benefit you.
By disabling the Diagnostic and Usage sending (Settings > General > About > Diagnostic & Usage > Don't Send, I've seen dramatic gains. I went from a battery at 20% after virtually no uage and four hours in standby to a battery at 33% after 4:45 of usage and 14:25 in stand by.
