Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I wanted to buy the iphone 4S but after knowing about all this battery problems, I'm not sure anymore.

If you buy an iphone is because you want all this siri and icloud features so having to turn them off makes no sense to me.

Standby time on 4S (up to 200h) is always going to be worse than on iphone 4 (up to 300h) but 10% drain per hour is unacceptable.

I just hope it's an iOS5 problem that can be fixed with the next update.

i´m having like 2-3 % per hour in standby, without bluetooth and timezone settings and compass calibration turned off. this means if its constant, about 50 hours of standby. still ***** ... i´ll wait for a fix and if there´s nothing coming i´ll return the phone.

    On my 4s I had:

3 Hours 44 minutes of usage

    1 day, 4 hours Standby

And battery was down to 40%

All I was doing was txting now and then on the phone and took a few photos.

I just want to add my phone-iPhone4s- to the list of phones with battery issues. I'm a very light user and have huge issues with the lack of battery life. I was talking with another new iPhone user just yesterday and he said the same thing. I hope Apple has an answer and a fix for us soon.

My 80 year old mother just bought a Verizon iPhone 4S, her first smartphone. She lives alone, and takes her phone to bed with her as security and for emergencies. She charges it during the evening, and it now is completely dead by morning. I've switched off everything that is known to be a battery drain, but can't solve the problem.

She was so excited to get an iPhone, as she's loved her iPad. But this experience has her worried and stressed that if she needs emergency assistance, she won't have a working phone. She's ready to go back to a plain basic phone since the iPhone won't even hold a charge for 8 hours.

So, after turning off a welter of features that make the phone somewhat more more useful than an iPod, and whacking and reinstalling email accounts and profiles, I woke this morning to find that my phone's battery had lost 5% of charge in the previous 12 hours.  During that time, I sent a couple of text messages and checked mail once or twice.  Fine.

Within two hours of getting up, and having not touched the phone after first checking its battery, I found that the battery had shed another 20%.

Some polling process is running amok, obviously.  But which?  Yet another piece of sage advice recommends shutting down all Facebook push notifications, so I tried that.  Will it work?  Doubtful.  Next stop, the "genius" bar.

I had a 100% charge when I placed my phone at my nightstand at 11 PM to use it as an alarm clock.  By the time my alarm was supposed to go off at 7 AM the battery had completely drained, the alarm did not go off and I almost missed my flight.  There were no applications running in the background as I had shut everything (except the clock) down.  I did have location services turned on, and my two e-mail accounts were set to push.  I certainly hope this is a software bug that they can fix because I can't rely on this phone for traveling and I only have 30 days to return my phone to Verizon for an android!

Why are people acting like they are helpless?!?!?!   Tell mom to leave the bloody phone plugged in at night!

APPLE will come out with a fix, once they develop one.   Remember that Antenna-gate took nearly a month to get a fix out.   The original 3Gs battery issues took nearly as long.

APPLE does not and will not comment on this issue until a fix is ready.   They are not going to change the rulee under which they operate, no matter how much whining and complaining we do.

I feel for those who cannot get a full day out of their phone as that is truly frustrating.   For those whining about not getting more than 2 days, CHARGE THE PHONE EVERY NIGHT UNTIL A FIX IS RELEASED!       The world really is not ending here.......   :-/

    Hi everyone,

I am New to this forum and only signed in to voice my concerns about the battery issue for apple to account for it.

I cannot offer any new info, but I am - as a new apple user - as frustrated as everyone else here.

My 4s has the same issues and is usually down at the end of the day or ever earlier, and has to be recharged every single day.

And, I have been using the phone only moderately, just a couple of short phone calls per day and some browsing.

I already purchased a spare battery pack (mophie) As a last reserve while on the go.

This is unbearable and I don't see the point in buying such a costly device - especially on the backdrop of the current ios5 vs android/Samsung debate if the 4s let's me down that way. I do hope apple is able to offer a solution soon.

Perhaps you should invest in an anger management course or something.  In my particular case there were no outlets near the bed, so I took my 100% charged phone to the nighstand figuring that the charge should last for at least 8 hours since nothing was running except for the clock.  So, Jameson perhaos you could call all the hotels in Europe to put plugs near the bed so this doesn't happen again, or get apple to give a charge cable longer than 18 inches - or how about them fixing their $600 product so it works as advertised (or close to it)?

Again, richardfromweston chimes in with another helpless comment.   If mom is frightened about having no phone during the night, PLUG THE PHONE IN!   Is she laying out in the forest with no power in sight?   Come on guy.   Get a grip, will ya?!?!?!?

I am having the same problem with my iPhone 4 running iOS 5.

    Here are my specs:

    • 32 GB iPhone 4 running iOS 5 (5.0 9A334)
    • AT&T user (Carrier AT&T 11.0)
    • Model: MC610LL
    • Modem firmware: 04.11.08

    Problem Summary:

My iPhone 4's battery life is consierably worse than it was when it was running iOS 4.x. It's going from 100% to <20% battery life in as few as 4 hours. I'm outside of the hardware warranty, but since the issue only started when I upgraded to iOS 5, I'm hoping it's only a software issue.

    Attempted Resolution Steps:

Here's what I've tried so far to isolate the problem, with no success.

    • Disabled Wi-Fi sync and left it disabled throughout the rest of the tests listed below. It had no impact on extending the life of the battery.
    • Disabling bluetooth -- had no disernable impact (fully charged battery hit the 20% mark at around 4:19 of running in standby)
    • Disabling Wi-Fi -- had no disernable impact (fully charged battery hit the 20% mark at around 4:27 of running in standby)
    • Disabling bluetooth and Wi-Fi -- had no disernable impact (fully charged battery hit the 20% mark at around 4:48 of running in standby)
    • Disabling location services -- had no disernable impact (fully charged battery hit the 20% mark at around 5:21 of running in standby)
    • Running the phone in airplane mode with Wi-Fi disabled -- (fully charged battery hit the 20% mark at around 5:32 of running in standby, though it's not very functional in this state so it's not a very viable solution, to squeeze out only an incremential increase in performance)
    • Restored the phone and then applied backup -- had no disernable impact (fully charged battery hit the 20% mark at around 4:03 of running in standby)
    • Restored the phone and reinstalled as if it was a new device -- manually added apps, content, etc. -- had not disernable impact on battery life, but took quite a while. I'm still sitting around 4:15 minutes before a fully-charged battery hits the 20% mark and it's only downhill from there.

If anyone from Apple or on the forums have any suggestions on next steps for troubleshooting, I'd love to know. As of now, I'm just wandering around with a dock connector cable and wall charger, hoping to find a power outlet wherever I go.

During the four hours, I didn't do anything with the phone -- I left it in standby, though I did receive an occasional message.

After all the troubleshooting, I've found a solution to this issue. This has worked for me, so I wanted to share it with everyone else to see if it could benefit you.

By disabling the Diagnostic and Usage sending (Settings > General > About > Diagnostic & Usage > Don't Send, I've seen dramatic gains. I went from a battery at 20% after virtually no uage and four hours in standby to a battery at 33% after 4:45 of usage and 14:25 in stand by.

Tell my 80 year old mother to plug it in? Obviously you don't know how older people operate. She's 5 feet tall in a king size bed, and has trouble getting out of the bed or even rolling over sometimes. She holds her phone in her hands all night, as it is her lifeline to family and emergency services. She's afraid that if something happes, she can't reach the nightstand for the house phone. Have some compassion rather than being a jerk!
