Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I upgraded to a new 4gS (ATT) and the battery life is not that bad as others are expierencing on the forum but it is not great. I would say text messaging seem to drian my battery faster then any other iphone i've had before. I just purchased two mophie juice pack air's. Giving one to my employee to test and other to myself to give a little more of a buffer.

We purchased the new 64GB iPhone 4gs for all the employees to use the video/camera for projects.  We tested one iPhone successfully before we purchased more of them but it now a couple of the phones seem to drain at a different rate acording to the users (Sprint)... I don't have enterprise settings enabled but I may be looking to nerfing thier usage if they can't make it work for them.

Well I also suffer from a very fast battery drain on my new iPhone4S and it heats up very fast, I am afraid this li-po is going to blow up on me or something, I have reset the phone, turned off location settings and still when i remove the phone from the charger at 100% charge and check back in 30 minutes to an hour I see a drop of 25% or more. When I use the phone it drops even faster i can litteraly sit and watch the percentage drop. So I need to keep it constantly charged, already contacted Verizon and they say to wait for Apple's findings on this. Again I am afraid this thing is going to blow up for it gets pretty dang hot, not even close on my previous phone which was a droid X. I hope you find a solution to this problem soon for this phone was not cheap.

I had a 3gs and now a 4s.  To me the battery drain is entirely related to where I am.  At work we have terrible carrier access (special energy shield windows, etc. etc.) and my battery goes down relatively quickly.  At home on weekends where access is fine and I do more with the phone I barely use battery at all. All the answers and all the comments here to me, point out to a disign issue or bug that the phone keeps trying and trying to do certain network things when either network connection is weak or it get errors (not necessarily reported to you).  I don't have a great suggestion and I do agree we didn't buy these phones to turn off features.  I do think that turning on features that you don't need is also not the way to go.  If you don't use bluetooth turn it off.  If you don't travel you probably don't need to search for time zones.

I suspect many are having issues with either bad data or bad connections to iCloud and the phones just go into a loop trying to get beyond that error.  In my distant path we used to have similar problems with an early network system - only really resolved when retrying of errors was slowed down after initial retry

I don't expect battery to last forever -but a couple of days with plenty of reserve would be nice.

I received iPhone 4S on the 14th, battery drain while going through setup. Over next 2 days, had to recharge from single digit percentage twice a day. Was draining an average of 20 percent plus per hour. 17th called Apple Care. Received new phone on 19th.  Replacement phone averages about 5 percent per hour, or more.  Still not sure if going to keep it or go back to Blackberry Bold.  Will miss some of the nice apps but will have a usable phone when I need one to make a call.  With normal (normal for me) use, I could, if necessary, get 2 days of charge from the Blackberry Bold. This is a Sprint 16 GB, Black.  I keep just about everything I can off until it need it.  Which is not how you would expect to use sure a great featured phone and still have this battery drain.  I ahve an iTouch and and iPad and leave all the features turned on (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Location, Cellular on iPad) and these devices can go at least 3 days before I even think of charging them and more if they are not at least displaying in the teens for battery percentage.

We all paid a lot of money and none of us are thrilled with these latest events.   HOWEVER, APPLE is certain to come up with a fix for this and we'll all forget about it in no time.     Before you know it, we'll be fixated on when the 4G iPhone will be released!   ;-)

I'm also seeing a farily rapid battery drain on my new 4S, it seems to drop about 10 - 15% per hourwith minimal usage.  None of the suggested fixes in this string seem to do anythng to help and I'm reluctant to go though the hassle of resorting the phone and setting everyting back up from scratch.

Hoping for some sort of fix from Apple soon.

Upgraded my iPhone 4 to the 4S.  Plugged my 4S in to charge last night.  At 10:30 PM had 49% charge.  At 7:00 AM, the battery was at 12%.  Whats going on?  The iPhone 4 was good for 2-3 days of moderate usage.  The 4S dies while idle and plugged in...

Turned off Push setting for email, Bluetooth, and lowered Brightness. Result? The same (well, there is a very slight improvement, maybe 1%), still at a rate about 15% an hour drainage. Can it be Siri?

I have tried everything including turning off Siri.....doesn't help!

Anyways if this ended up working, its a ridiculous solution as we have spent a big amount of money for this phone and now turning off everything doesn't make sense, I could have ended up getting a $50 phone, just another one of Apple's BS marketing stunts cashing in on the 'cult' following and euphoria for an Apple product which has been released without proper testing

I'm not one to complain and normally would just wait for a fix, but I just want Apple to know that I think the problem is effecting more phones than they think.  My 4S and 4 don't last half a day without having to be charge.  My 4 had a long battery life until the iOS5 upgrade.  I love both phones and I'm sure Apple will have  this problem solved soon.  Until then carry a charger with you.

Being a recent iPhone convert, I am unaware of what the normal or expected battery life should be..(i.e. iPhone 4 battery life)  I previously had a Droid Incredible and that drained the battery by the minute. I had to charge it at least 2-3 times per day. So anything is an improvement, however, I have been testing my new 4S and have found that with certain location services turned off, email set to push, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, it drains at about 1% every 15 minutes. This is while it is sitting on my desk and me checking every 15 minutes only for the sake of my experiment. Under normal use, I cannot make it to the end of the day (6am - 930pm) without getting the battery warning.

Is this typical? Should I be getting better battery life?

Like many other users, I'm losing 2-3 percent an hour in standby. That's after turning the Location Services, most Push notifications and a ton of other "battery drainers" off. I also "calibrated" the battery by running it all the way down and then recharging to 100 percent. Light use - web browsing on WiFi and playing Words with Friends - results in about 15 percent (sometimes more) loss per hour. That's pretty terrible!

Apple, what's the fix? Do we all need new phones?

At 7:30am my charge is 100%. I have set email to fetch manually. I did the time zone "fix" thing. By 2pm at work I am below 20% charge. My 2.5 year old 3GS lasted longer than this. Summary of things I did on the iPhone 4S between 7:30am-2pm:

Looked at 3 web pages for <5 min

    Sent 5 texts

Listened to iPod for 20 min in the car while it was connected to USB car charger

Pulled up 3 apps - CNET, MSNBC and NPR news. Spend <10 min reviewing news there.

Played one word on Hanging with Friends (126 pts by the way!)

    That's it!

In the time i've been writing this, I have gone from 19% down to 16%.

    This is crazy!!!!!

I can't keep plugging it in everytime I want to use it.

I have been an extremely loyal Apple fan until now...hoping for a real fix soon!!!!!

I am also experiencing excessive battery drain, hitting the <20% mark after 5 hours consisting of 90% standby time, 8% receiving email, 2% actually using data.  I turned off all the location services and time zone update, but I can't locate the don't send diagnostics to apple to close that potential issue.

    FIRST!

It's probably not your hardware, everything points to software.  Hardware might make the problem worse (a 4S processor running at 80% will consume more energy than a 4 processor at the same level).

    SECOND!

Apple is likely aware now, but was not aware prior to release that this was an issue.  They wouldn't want the negative press trust me.  There are a million ways that the most tested piece of software has bugs when it comes out.  Android is no better, Windows is no better, and neither is Apple.  It is the nature of the beast, especially in the OS world.

    THIRD!

It can be done but your solution may not be exactly the same as the next persons.  I had horrible issues.  I read alot of posts, I complained, I then resolved to find my answer.  For me it was the Exchange Calendar Notifications in the Notifications center, now that it is turned off, my battery life is normal.  For others it's been time-zone location services, others data connection loops, etc.  Just recognize that your issue may not be the same as someone elses.  Just because the symptoms are the same does not mean the illness is.
