Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Like almost everybody here i also have been struggling with some iPhone 4s batterylife issues.

First i tried, like suggested a few times earlier in this topic, to setup my iphone as "a new iphone" instead of placing back my icloud backup. This didnt seem to work for me. The sollution offered by the following website (also posted a few times earlier) seems to workout better for me.

Especially in stand-by modus the battery seems to drain much less then before.

I have bought a couple batteries and for the iPhone 3GS and using a program named Battery Info Lite from Cydia, I noticed those batteries shipped with 4-6 charge cycles on them from the factory.  I assume that is done to test and calibrate the battery, I wonder if that wasnt dont for some of our phones.  That would explain the calibration problems noted by some who say they were discharging from 1% for almost an hour and others who noted the problem got better after full discharge/recharge.  It doesnt explain everything, but that could be a part of it.

A poll on CNET's website this morning shows only 30% users think there is a problem with the battery.

I upgraded my iPhone 4 to the 4S... I just received my iPhone 4S yesterday and promptly set it up.  I did not restore from backup, I set it up as a completely new device.

The battery life on this phone is horrible.  I don't have anything extra going on with this phone (compared to my year and a half old iPhone 4) aside from Siri.  I took my phone off of the charger this morning at 100% and within 15 minutes it had already dropped 4% WITHOUT ANY USE.

Apple needs to address this, it's obviously an issue with the OS / hardware... man up Apple and get on it.

The thing I've noticed is that when mobile data is turned off, the signal bars still show that of a 3G signal, suggesting the 3G attenae is still functional, even though the mobile data is off which I just can't understand- it's got to be a software bug.

In the meanwhile, I found a tip which has significantly improved the battery life by at least 2 or 3 hours. I essentially deleted my iCloud account from the iPhone and re-imported everything. To do this go to Settings > iCloud> then scroll to delete account. This only deletes data from the iPhone, stuff on the server is safe. Then I signed in again and let everything download back down.

I mention this because I've seen stories of corrupted iCloud contacts causing looping crashes on the iPhone, hence leading to battery drain.

That's certainly not right- even with the poor battery life, it shouldn't be running down that quick. Take it to an Apple Store

    Here's the last post from my real life battery test from yesterday;

    photo2.PNG

Like I stated on my posts on pages 167 and again on 170 that from normal use consisting of wifi browsing, video playback, youtube, vevo, music, 3G browsing, phone calls, texts, SIRI etc. I really believe the 2 full cycle charges along with a trickle charge from the battery doctor pro app improved my battery life quite a bit. Its worth a shot! Anyway my settings are posted on page 167. I am going to do a recovery restore and re test tomorrow see if there is any difference. Hope this helps!

    Folks,

Here's what I did to get my iPhone 4S to last 2.5 days with 41% battery remaining, and the fix only takes 5 minutes (with more screenshots):

    https://plus.google.com/u/0/109087467436585685463/posts/Zukh8dFh7Ao

For me the main culprit is my email accounts, and deleting them and adding them back was the trick, but I turned off more settings that others have shared in this forum to hypermile my battery. Hope this helps some of you!

Hello everyone! I haven't read all pages in this thread, sorry if this question has been raised earlier: While restoring my phone helped to increase the battery life, I have realized that the Mobile Network Data go up, even if mail, safari, etc are not running in the background (I fetch email manually). Also, iCloud is disabled, diagnostic data -> don't send, and no automatic updates. I did a reset of the mobile usage data and got this: At 18:09 local time, I had Sent: 60 kb, received: 923 kb; at 18:25 it was 65kb and 934 kb; at 18:27 it was 68 kb and 939 kb; now (18:44) it is 92 kb and 1.6 mb... Is this expected? If yes, why? Can anyone shed some light on this?

Apple removed the toggle for 3G Data under the Network menu.  Turning off Cellular Data does not effect 3G, which is permanently enabled on the 4s.  Still have the option to control each function separately on the iPhone 4 though.

Try turning off push for exchange (Fetch 15 instead), time zone settings, and everything in location services\system ervices except for Cell Network Serach and Compass Calibration. If it still drains 15% per hour after that, I'm not quite sure.

I too have faced the same issue with My Iphone 4s ,If i charge it completly and let it on stand by overnight for 6 hrs it drains my battery by 40%.

I tried doing the following .

1.Turn off lift and talk Siri .

2.Turn off automatic update of time.

    3.Turn off i cloud.

    4.Reset network.

This kind of slightly improved my battery life , what i really cannot understand is why is it draining battery to the extend of 10-15%/hr.

I really cannot charge in the middle of the day , really like this phone and i it continues the same way its still in return period so will definitelly will return and change to Samsung Galaxy S2.

I am hoping that apple comes out a solution very soon!!!

    Hello everyone,

I was having similar issues with my iPhone 4S battery life, although it wasn't an everday occurance.  Somedays it would drain 1% every few minutes and other days it was fine.  It seemed like there was some sort of process running in the background that would drain the battery when the phone was in Standby.

Luckily, I was able to solve my particular issue and it solved the battery life issue for me. It had to do with a calendar event running in the background. Please check these two threads and see if this fixes your issue. Hopefully this will help some of you out.  A quick way to check is to look at your pull down notifcations and see if the calendar looks "jittery" at all.  Also, unanswered calendar invites caused a problem for me as well...

This is so annoying! I drained my battery purposely and charged it over night. In under 4 hours it was already at 52% battery life! I went into the settings several times and adjusted everything to the minimum of what I require but this is silly. What's the point of having all these fancy features if I can't even use most them to conserve battery life? Even putting my phone on sleep drained 2% within minutes. I might have to start bringing my usb everywhere I go to charge.

Have you tried to do a power cycle and a reset of network settings? I have had several issues that caused the battery to drain, and I was able to diagnose them with the (tedious) method summarized here:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16588869#16588869

Again, it's a tedious process, but it may help.

Hope is in the air!  I just got off the phone with Apple.  An engineer called me (based on my participation in this thread) and asked a bunch of questions about my usage pattern to feed back to the Apple that is working on the battery issue.  He also asked permission to install a monitoring app on my iPhone so that they would have a log of my activities.  No solution yet and he was careful to indicate that they are doing this to ensure that perception matches reality in terms of usage, but at least it's progress in my view.

Wireshark capture update. I recently started running wireshark captures to see what its happening on the wifi side while in "standby mode". Clearly there is a lot going on while theoretically asleep. I am seeing lots of short frame packets for QoS and probe requests (typically associated with discovering access points). I have a separate thread for more technical oriented postings. If anyone here is comfortable running network packet captures and is seeing this type of activity please consider posting on the following thread:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16582888#16582888

I am sure there are other things happening but dumping lots of short frame packets and sending probes while in standby does not make sense. Especially with no active apps, manual email, no icloud, and no external IP connections. I am going to dust off  my 802.11 analysis skills and see if I can pinpoint the packet types coming out.
