Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I do want to share too that I just read the iPhone return policy for a full refund is *30 days*. I know that myself and a few other people in this thread thought it was 14 days. So this gives us a bit more time to figure it out and try to see if its going to be usable or not.

Just a minor warning - Apple does give you 30 days to return the phone, but as their returns policy mentions, your plan limitations are between you and your carrier.  So if your carrier only gives you, say, a 14 day trial period, and you return your phone after 20 days, Apple will be fine with it, but your carrier may stick you with a service/plan ETF.

Hey everyone,  I think I solved the problem of the battery drain issue for my 4s when its sleeping.

    I followed various solutions

    • Delete exchange mail accounts, restart and add them again
    • Turn off Raise to Speak on Siri
    • Mail Push Off
    • Mail Fetch Manually
    • Mail Advanced Fetch -> Everything manual
    • App store -> Automatic Downloads Off
    • App store -> Use Cellular Data Off
    • iCloud documents and data -> Use Cellular Data Off

So I ran a test last night.  I charged it full to 100% and put it to sleep for about 8 hours.  Woke up this morning the and the battery was 98%.  I think one of the solutions above solved it for me.  I think the culprit maybe the use cellular data option is on while sleeping and causes the 3G antenna to constatnly talk to iCloud.  That may explain why everyone who upgraded to iOS 5 is having this battery issue.

    Hope that helps

    My current settings

    • iCloud everything on
    • Location Services on
    • Notifications on
    • Home sharing off

Hmm, for some reason, my battery life is much improved today (Thursday,Oct 20). I haven't been trying many tweaks. Either the battery is breaking in or there have been some changes to the network, I guess.

Left 64 white 4s plugged in last night to make sure alarm would wake me.  Alarm set to playlist.  Had it set for 3 different times.  Happened to wake (not via alarm).  No

    Music was displayed.

I refuse to turn all features off.  However, I went into each app that was using location & turned those

Off.  Surprised to see how many unnessarily use location.  Left location on in settings & on GPS navigation.  Also, left find my phone enabled. I do not have mail set to push.  Substantial improvement for battery by disabling apps location & letting phone drain & recharge.  But, not near what is expected of battery.

You can do this from your iPhone. Go to Settings | iCloud | Turn On all the options you see there. ( mail, Contacts, calenders, reminders ..... etc). Then scroll all the way to the bottom & hit "Storage & Backup". If you didnt have a iCloud mail set-up it will take you thru creating a name@me.com & once you set that up with a password, it will automatically sysnc you iPhone to the iCloud. If the data you have on the phone is in excess to 5GB you will have to pay for extra space. Else you can turn off some features you may not want to back up to iCloud like the reminders..etc & then continue.

    Hope this helps.

I just called, first they've heard of the problem. She told me to restore my phone and if that doesn't fix the issue they'd give me a new one.

That's a lie, I called them earlier this week about it and I would think that most people in this forum have done the same.

I love how Apple keep their secrecy surrounding product launches etc etc.... And I'm sure these last 2 weeks haven't been the easiest for Apple as a whole, but just to let their users know if 5.0.1 is coming, when it's coming and if it will provide a fix for the battery issues would be nice.

In my own experience, the first few days were awful with the battery life, I restored from an iCloud back up to a brand spanking new 4s and was getting about 4 hours, I've done about 4/5 complete discharge and recharge and setup as a new iPhone today and manually restored all my apps, this took about 2 and a half hours.

The good news now is that after doing that last night I'm now on 29% battery life showing 11hours standby and 6hrs 40 mins usage, the usage has been some texting, a 33 min phone call, lots of instant messaging and Safari use mainly over WI-FI and to add to that I even popped out to the shops (about an hour journey all round) and set myself a GPS reminder whilst leaving both WI-FI and Cellular Data on the whole time, I listened to Spotify music the whole time I was out also and I've been tweeting all day.

It's getting better, but now wondering if I should restore the iPhone back to how it was before all that hassle to see if it's still going to suffer the same problems......

Ok everyone, i hope youre all still calling Apple and letting them know whats going on. When I talked to a rep, we agreed that i should just wait a week and see what the battery does. And I have to say, my battery is lasting about an extra hour with every charge i do. If, lets say, tuesday it lasted 8 hours, yeterday it lasted 9 hours, and today it should last 10-11 hours until the battery goes into full charge.

Im at 51% right now and about to get to 7 hours unplugged, which is MUCH better than before. Ill update again tomorrow. BTW, I have a 4S and have some things turned off like bluetooth and such, not much tweeking because I dont belive I have to turn off things that are meant to be used. SIRI is on also.

i was having similar issues as well and i think i have it solved. i can't remember if it was this thread or another where i read that it could be issues with IMAP mail accounts brought over from a restore.

so i deleted my Gmail account and added it again. i also turned off Siri's "raise to talk" feature. those were the only two things i did, everything else i left the same.

charged to 100% before i went to bed last night and left it off the charger throughout the night. woke up this morning and there was still a 98% charge.

after pretty heavy use all day at work and using the iPod for about five hours, i'm only down to 55%. yesterday, i would've had to charge mid-way through the day.

so i think it's solved on my end, and it seems that the IMAP account was the likely culprit.

Like everyone else here, I am having battery life problems.

I still have my old iPhone 4 (which has identical applications and settings as my iPhone 4S).  I charged both to 100% and left them overnight (no apps running, nothing).

Woke up 7 hours later and the iPhone 4 was down to 97% whilst my iPhone 4s was at 64%.  Another hour has passed and the 4S is now 55% and the iPhone 4 is at 96%.

After a day's normal usage, my old iPhone 4 would finish at around 70% but the 4S is virtually dead.

I don't use push for email etc, and the settings on both phones is exactly the same (other than Siri).

I will try to drop in and see a Genius.  I do hope this is a software thing with the 4S and can be fixed with the next upgrade
