Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Glad to hear you've got things sorted out

I've put everything in a separate discussion now.

Hopefully more people will see the information there and solve their own 4S problem.

I'm now resorting to switching off Wifi, putting phone into airplane mode charging via mains and switching phone off during the charge.

Its working well so far (day 2.5)

One odd thing. Woke up this morning and the phone had turned itself back on from its switched off state on charge.

Yeah, even with this fix, Apple needs to release an iOS fix asap.

Glad to hear you've sorted out your problem btw

I initially had this problem the first time I fully charged it so I turned off location services for all of my apps (except Siri) and waited until the battery completly drained and then fully recharged it and now I get at least two days out of it ( was using it from 6:30am monday till 10pm on Tuesday).

At the same time, I wonder how often people are surfing the web or playing games as this obviously has an impact too. Would suggest downloading the free "Battery Doctor" from the app store and following this advice..

Well I tryed to do a restore from itunes and got error 3149 I bellieve it was. So that's a no go, funny thing is I can't update my ipod 3rd gen to ios5 either. I've been monitoring it all morning, held 100% charge for about 3hr until I unlocked it and checked some stufff for about 2 min. I then force closed anything running and put back to sleep, 2hr later I'm at 70% with phone in stby whole time, ***. Look at my usage since full charge this morning and 4hr30 in stby and usage time, there is no way i was using the phone for more than 20 min. Keep in mind all apps are closed, location stuff is off, raise to speak off, deleted email accts., it seems the phone is somehow doing something pretty taxing in the background that I can't see and have no control over. This is why I am leaning toward a software/firmware issue. Unfortunately like I wrote above I cannot do a restore as I keep getting an error. I'm gonna keep trying stuff to remedy the issue, but hopefully Apple gets this taken care of.

This was already mentioned in a prevoius post, but it is so buried that I am summarizing it here (because I cannot find it). The following values are for NORMAL battery behavior:

    • 100% / 200 hours (standby) = 0.5% per hour for standby (assuming that all options that would cause the CPU to work in the background is turned off). If you have Push, messages, locatioins, etc. enabled then expect the rate to be higher than 0.5% per hour!
    • 100% / 8 hours (talking on 3G) = 12.5% per hour of 3G use
    • 100% / 6 hrs (internet on 3G) = 16.67% per hour of internet use on 3G, or about 1.5% every 5 minutes (it's actually 1.39%)
    • 100% / 9 hrs (internet on wifi) = 11.11% per hour of internet use on wifi, or about 1% every 5 minutes (actually 0.93%)

Even when I had massive battery drains, it wasn't actually due to a bad battery. It was almost always something trying to access my 3G network. Here were my own (tedious) steps in figuring out the cause:

After restore as new phone I am now loosing 1% per hour on average - I think thats probably about as good as you can expect

    • Wifi On
    • Cloud Off
    • Diagnostics thing Off
    • Wifi Sync Off
    • 3G On (coz I cant turn it ioff!)
    • Location Services On (Except for Time zone)
    • Siri On
    • iMessage On

I've re downloaded a few apps from the app store that I use the most

In Fairness this is how it was when I first got it, it was only when it started dying with 8-10% left that I tried a restore from back up and it all went down hill.

Personally I dont think that there is a fix to this, Its clearly not one thing / switch / toggle / function that's screwing this up - Those who have found a happy medium i think have done so more out of luck than finding the overall cause

Only thing to do now is sit back and wait for apple to provide a real fix.

I tried all workarounds mentioned in this forum, everything is turned off, all the tips and tricks worked a tiny bit but the simple fact is that none of those is a real solution, battery still dies in a single day (aprox 20 hours). Moreover I didn't buy iPhone to not use all the features.. I bought it because I want to use iCloud and Location Services and Notifications but with them on, the battery dies in half a day.

Come-on fruity guys, fix it! I don’t care if you acknowledge it as an issue, I don’t care how you treat it, feel free to play the same game as with “ip4 signal lose issue” I really don’t care (no-one of IP4S customers does) just fix it. Provide an update or whatever.

    Thanks

    I noticed couple of things.

When you access your contact list to make a call, something is trying to access the network. Not sure what, but you can see the rotating/blinking circle next to 3G.

Also, I feel like all this battery drain might be because of iCloud. So I turned it off.

I am not sure what else to do ...

I shouldn't have to disable all the features to have decent battery life. It isn't an Iphone without these features.

I should be able to go at least 1 full day with everything on, come on now.

That is odd, I just now checked my phone and it does not do that.  If you put your phone in airplane mode and open contacts, are they there? (I'm wondering if your contacts are stored in the cloud only and not your phone).

When I first got my iPhone 4s, about a week ago, I didn't set up email for a couple of days, and now that I look back on it, I didn't have battery issues during those 2 days. Coincidence?

Now my battery drains wildly, even after doing all the suggested things like turning off various services, killing all running apps, etc. After a 100% charge, my phone's battery was down to 85% just one hour later with no usage whatsoever.

This morning, after leaving it plugged in overnight (so I would have a usable phone, as opposed to what happened yesterday: 100% drain overnight), the battery still showed only 97% charge with Battery Doctor Pro.

Has anyone else made a connection between Apple Mail and battery life? I'm not sure this is the issue, but it's the only thing that seemed to trigger the drain.

I also have an iPod Touch which turned into a brick after upgrading to iOS 5, so I'm thinking that this iOS may be the issue, not the hardware, but my phone is running hot, so who knows.

When i got my iPhone 4S the battery died within a couple of hours... after a full charge

Check in general / about / diagnostic & usage - tick Don't send

iOS5 seems to automatically by default send usage data to apple's servers - battery life has improved considerably since i disabled this feature. i can now use the phone all day long with all features enabled

I've been trying all the different solutions and getting a little more time out of my phone. My first few days were horrible. I was plagued with the sharp discharge to zero after getting to 50% even using wifi.

This morning I woke up and unpluged the phone from the charger and read thorough some emails and noticed the power going down. 15% in one hour. Read 10 emails. Nothing else.

I noticed the purple location services icon and went searching.

Compass Calibration was "stuck" on in location services, so I turned than off too.

Will see if that does anything else.

I went one step further and turned all of the system services off, as they only seemt to send data to Apple and don't help my phone.

Crowd-sourced Wi-Fi and cellular Location Services

If Location Services is on, your device will periodically send the geo-tagged locations of nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers in an anonymous and encrypted form to Apple, to augment the crowd-sourced database of Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower locations. In addition, if you are traveling (for example, in a car) and Location Services is on, a GPS-enabled iOS device will also periodically send GPS locations and travel speed information in an anonymous and encrypted form to Apple, to be used for building up a crowd-sourced road traffic database. The crowd-sourced location data gathered by Apple does not personally identify you.
