Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I bought 2 x 32g 4s and an 8 gig 4... One of the 4s's has 84% the 4 has died and the other 4s has 10 left... They all use the same exchange server and have the same settings enabled. I know apple used another manufacturer in south america,... Is there a way to know which facility the phones were made at??

Within those 20 hours, did you receive email updates? Push notifications? Did any of the locations get updated (check to see if there is an arrow next to the locations options -- if there is, then those locations features were accessed even during standby). It could be that all those features eventually add up in usage time even if you had it in standby.

As far as i know the devices are made at Foxcon in China. And the parts are to 70% made by Samsung.

How quickly does your battery drain when you play a game? Next time, before you play your game, note down the Usage/Standby times before and after you play the game. And of course, note the battery levels too. Most of the folks here are posting about battery issues when they do almost nothing on their phone (no gaming, standby mode only, etc)

No, location services are off, email account deleted, push was off anyway before deletion.

i finnaly fixed mine, it was so simple, all i did was let the battery run down to 0% then charged it back up to 100%. and it works fine now. i was doubtfull this would happen, but it worked for me. i still have location services on and everything. before i was losing 20% an hour or more. now its about 1-3% an hour. try this out, i hope it works

    Right now

    81%

Usage: 1 hour and 22 minutes

Standby: 8 hours and 51 minutes

I really don't know if that is good or not (rs1n do you really think that is good?)

I'm really afraid to have a HW problem :-(

Yeah but purely testing the standby drain, it drains around 5% an hour.  That means if i left the phone stand by for 20 hours, it would completely discharge.  Apple even says it can play 40hours of music non-stop, but mine is on standby.

This seems like standby usage is the issue.

I've been experiencing the same, awful battery life for the 4s.  At first, I attributed the battery usage to app downloads and customizing my settings, but the amount of battery life kept dropping when the phone was not in use.  I googled "iphone 4s low battery life" and came upon several blogs with suggestions on how to conserve battery life.  The changes were made yesterday.  I have been at work for the last 4 hours and did not touch my iphone until a moment ago to find my battery life at 74%.  What gives?  I turned off the location service, push notifications, changed my email settings to manual updates, etc. but still experience the same battery drain.  Help, Apple!

Ok.. Weird.. Look at my data usage between the photos.. 1 day the data usage was 4 gigs and 1.5 gigs of upload.. and then i just looked today and it lowered??? ***.. For those that dont believe it.. go look at the call time usage. u can see how that increased while data usage supposedly decreased?

Also uploaded my usage stats for today so far

If doing a standby drain test shows 5% drop every hour, and you are still interested in investigating your drain issues to at least figure out the cause, you could try (if you haven't already done so)

I don't work for Apple, but your own testing might be useful for the rest of us.

Restoring from iCloud did nothing.  It's 2 pm and I'm already getting 30 min of unexplained usage during standby with 90% left on the battery.  Didn't use the phone at all today.  I've basically tried everything mentioned on this forum, short of restoring as a new phone or turning off all notifications etc to make it a dumb-phone (both of these are not an option).  In 2 minutes, I've already seen it tick down 2% further.

My colleage with a 3GS says he's getting battery life problems ever since he updated to iOS5, so I imagine this is not a hardware problem.

Well, I can't say for sure for anyone's situation other than my own because I don't know how you used your phone during the 1hr and 22mins, nor do I know your phone's configurations. But you can do the calculations for yourself using:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16597440#16597440

    In summary:

Talking on a 3G network usually drains about 12.5% (if that's all you do)

Internet via 3G usually drain about 16.67% per hour (if that's all you do)

Internet via Wifi usually drain about 11% per hour (if that's all you do)

Then you also have to add for the fact that the iPhone continually drains the battery (albeit, and should be, very slowly) when not in use: about 0.5% per hour. But that 0.5% per hour rate assumes that absolutely nothing is working in the background while you're away from your phone.

Other things will cause different values: e.g. Youtube on wifi for 1 hour isn't the same as browsing mainly text sights for 1 hour.

I hope that gives you enough information to decide whether your battery is behaving properly.
