Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I must commend your efforts in helping folks here, but I think the format of this forum is very poorly structured for sharing information. I feel like I'm standing by a freeway trying to shout directions to drivers whizzing by. I've shared the steps I used to fix my battery to still have 28% after nearly 3 days, without braving the factory reset you did. I guess the "Reset All Settings" step sounds omnious to most, but it hardly affected my phone and really did the trick for me.

Thank you -- and, GREAT analogy. It is standing by a freeway. I wish there were notifications when someone replied directly to me. I wonder if I have missed others. There is so much volume in here, I can't keep up and it really makes dialog difficult.

Regarding your suggestion: I completely agree. The reset all is not at all ominous and certainly easier to move forward from than wiping out the phone.

I most definitely endorse doing that first.

I know there are a ton of people in her who would benefit from this (but don't want to go that far, so they settle for switching Siri off, etc) and/or a factory restore.

I understand the reluctance, but I really believe it's a solid solution.

You mentioned that you're using Exchange, my battery issue appears to be related (although possibly co-incidental) to a bug that causes jittery calendar reminders on the Notifications Centre (swipe down) page:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16456738#16456738

Yeah, we've got a crazy Exchange set up (it's actually Novell GroupWise, accessed through Exchange). Novell was made for the '90s when the purpose was to keep people out. I'm sure that was part of my problem.

Personally, I think the root of the battery issues is the phone's (and iOS 5's) persistence in trying to accomplish a task - when it really should just give up and move on. Bad contact? Stop trying to import it. Bad calendar reminder? OK, put up an error message and move on. Can't connect to the network? Fine, give it a few seconds instead of a millisecond. ...

Final solution for iPhone 4S battery problem. Switching of this or that might help but that is not the real solution. Take to to an Apple store. They fixed mine in 20 minutes and I now love the 4S. The problem is that if you set up your new 4S by restoring it from an old backup the part of the firmware that manages the battery gets messed up. After Apple reinstalled the firmware and I restored from iCloud all my contacts, Apps etc in now works 100%.

The only solution is take it to an Apple store !!!

My iPhone 4s battery life is terrible. I'm experiencing a 10-16% drop per hour. I need to have a charger with

me at all times. I unplugged my phone this morning at 7:20 and it's now 12:15 and my battery is on 50%. I have almost everything turned off that you possibly can. My battery drains dramatically when my phones is on standby.

Apple reported that only a handful of people are  complaining, which is sad. Everyone should complain because this issue affects every 4S IPhone and every other iPhone that runs OS5.0.  Please call Apple and complain about this, otherwise you will read again headlines that only a few people are reporting problems - therefore it is not a big deal. IT IS A BIG DEAL!   let us all send a clear message- this is not what has been advertised. It reminds me of the very first 4g phone - HTC Evo with Sprint which I returned just 4 days later due to similarly poor battery performance.

    ALLEN,

    IT DOESN'T EFFECT EVERY 4S!!!

    OR IOS5 .

GET IT RIGHT AND FOLLOW OUR SUGGESTIONS.

WHAT BATT CAPACITY YOU ARE SHOWING IS A NON CALIBRATED CELL.

BACK UP ALL TO ICLOUD, AND SYNC TO ITUNES. WIPE THE PHONE TO FACTORY SETTINGS. THIS WILL SET THE PHONE TO NEW OUTOF BOX . THEN SETUP PHONE AS "RESTORE FROM ICLOUD BACKUP"

RESYNC WITH ITUNES. PLAY TILL IT GOES DEAD FULLY BLACKOUT. THEN FULL CHARGE OVER NIGHT.

    YOU WILL SEE A DIFF.

I switched from a Droid to IPhone 4s........and was instantly shocked by the terrible battery life. Battery was declining at 10 to 15% an hour even when on standby. Back to the apple store at least four times. Tried all the stuff talked about in this blog including a complete wipe down and reinstall with iCloud. Was a tiny bit better but still could only get about five hours and the battery would never charge to 100%, only about 97%.

Yesterday the apple store swapped out the phone for a new one while the "genius bar" guy told me "gee, we haven't had any complaints. Your the first one".......really? Today they come clean that their is an issue and they will be doing a firmware update. Guess I didnt need the new phone after all. Oh, for what it's worth I got about 7 hours on the new phones charge today with moderate use. Not great but way better than the old one.

    Hello,

My iPhone 4 has suddenly started giving me very poor in fact no life at all. Yesterday night I had 78% battery left, and when I checked it today morning no power was there and to start it i had to plug into charger immediately.

I do not know how to fix this issue. In todays news I can see Apple making comments that this is due to some bug... are they selling this to us with bugs? Even if there is something wrong, why don't Apple check it in their Labs immediately and provide us a fix.

    Thanks

    Dhirendra

My phone was new out of the box, never had an iPhone before, and I have the short battery life issue so it's nothing to do with a bad backup (I didn't have a backup of an iPhone).

It's clearly a software issue and possibly a firmware one. Apple announced an update in 2 weeks to try and rectify the problem.

I've cycled the battery 2 times (letting it drain completely until the phone shuts off then charging) and the battery issue remains. So in my experience:

It's not a bad backup from a previous phone since I didn't have an iPhone before, and hence no backup to restore with. My phone was new out of the box and is.

It's not a poorly calibrated cell because I've cycled it three times since getting the phone.

I have noticed that the phone charges to 100% quite fast -and gets quite warm-, faster than I'd expect and faster than my iPad2 (which does have a larger battery) but I've never had an iPhone to compare charging times against.

I waited and waited for the new iPhone.

I did expect an "iPhone 5."

I have been using my iPhone 3G and just couldn't stand waiting any longer to upgrade.

    Surprised is the operative word!!!

My new iPhone 4S battery lasts me less than 7 hours.

I know all of the tricks to try to "slow down" the battery drain ...

But, "for Pete's sake" .... less than 7 hours of "careful use"

Then I turn on my brand new Mophie Juice Pack Air ...

And I only get all of 4 hours more ...

I am sorry, did I miss Apple's response to this issue?

    Jim

I think there will be a select few of us 4S owners with the battery problem who get a software update in a few weeks.  I wonder how can I get on this "list"?

My battery is very short lived going from 92% to 71% in under 4 hours in lock mode.

Has anyone else had the problem where they've turned off several features (Siri, Locations, Notifications etc) and noticed that the battery has temporarily improved, only to begin rapidly draining again after the next charge?

    I hope the update works!

I switched from a Blackberry 8520 to an iPhone 4s. Switch from a battery life of 5 days to 1 day was a big shock

Everything is off (Localisation, Wifi, Bluetooth, iCloud, FaceTime), my cellular is on standby during all the day and my battery is flat at the end of the day. When I use Siri, the battery is empty after one hour...

Please provide us with a solution!!!
