Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Well things are changing. Went to bed at 11:30pm with 50% battery, woke up at 6:45am with 35% life. The previous nights I had 4% drop. I think it has to do with how the phone handles incoming email. This morning I had 50 emails-all this thread!-and that made the standby drain 4X worse.

Then turn off email notifications on this forum. I turned it off because I got tired of getting emails everytime someone posted in a thread I was posting in.

Sparse reports on Macrumours and elsewhere suggest some improvement to standby time with 5.0.1 but very little improvement to usage time. It's early I'll concede.

This is not a good sign. Standby AND usage time need to be addressed. I know usage time requires much more investigation than standby, but it needs to be fixed. I can't lose 30% battery for every hour I use my phone, it's not right.

Nearly every day my phone has been completely drained of battery before the end of the day, starting with a full charge. I didn't realize that this was a persistent and real problem until I had had the phone for a week.

I started doing some research on the topic, found several blogs and help sites for increasing battery life on the 4S, and then I implemented all of the changes I learned about. Thru included location services, notification settings, apps running in the background, brightness, wifi and several others. Also, limiting your use of Siri can help.

I have now been operating my phone with these. We settings in place and I hardly notice a difference. Yesterday I plugged in with 4% battery when I got home, not to mention that I had charged it in the car for 20 minutes.

I hope that apple comes out with an update that will help te phone to run more efficiently without compromising the new features that I enjoy.

Like most of you I have a major problem with the iPhone 4s battery issue. I received my new iPhone 4s just 2 days ago and yesterday being my first full day using it I had to charge it 3x in one day. The battery life was considerably less than my 2 yr old iPhone 3G. I have also noticed a decrease in battery life in my iPad2 since upgrading to iOS5. Apple support just 10 min ago told me they are not aware of any issues relating to iOS5, iPhone 4s, etc... and the battery drainage. They have me doing a restore to new vs. restore from backup and if that doesn't help they said they would send me a new phone. This 2 hour process sounds pointless based on what I am reading. How can the CEO of Apple make a statement about acknowledging the issue yet Apple support has no clue?

My *GUESS* is that they don't want us to be able to turn off 3G because Siri needs the speedy connection to come back with an answer quickly.

I am having the same issue as so many others. My battery seems to be draining even without being used at all. I hope the new software fix that Apple is coming out with will take care of this problem.

I thought it was just the way I used my phone, but yes - my 4S battery has the same lifespan of my 3G, which I thought was horrible, Less than 8 hours of consecutive use when not plugged in.

The sample is really too small to draw any conclusion really. I think Apple and Android phones need to become more resilient to malformed data that trigger 3G requests and 3G has to be more intelligently implemented. Maybe there should be an option (that a user can disable) where when the phone reaches a battery draining scenario, it detects it and implements power saving features that steamline software access to the 3G hardware. True logging can help debug too. Plus the 3G off toggle needs to be reimplemented asap. Otherwise it may be that a poor app can cripple your phone within hours... and a new type of malware will emerge i.e. battery draining.

"A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices," Apple said in a statement to AllThingsD, a part of the Wall Street Journal network.

I'm annoyed by this statement. Obviously we are not a SMALL number. It's quite large.

I must be crazy, but I've been watching my power usage over the last couple days.  I think I use less power with the WiFi on.

The phone specifications specifically state that the phone gets better battery life using WiFi.

Read what they said "a small number of customers have REPORTED lower than expected battery life". Obviously when those people who complained, Apple decided to do some research (probably look at their forums/macRumors forums etc) and noticed quite alot of people are having the issue. I'd have no idea how to complain to Apple, it's hard enough working out how to do a repair.

There are less than 4000 comments on this thread.  They've sold easily over 4 million phones ths far (and likely ore).

    4000 / 4,000,000 = 0.001 percent of users.

    That's a small number.

Well apple are sending me a new phone, no arguments, they asked a great many questions to get an idea as to the problems and listened with feedback. I have a genuine issue as I tried all these suggestions got a little more battery life, but unfortunately it was still a power hungry beast. I then found as I backed up my contacts to orange UK, which requires 3G connection, I had a myself a mini hand warmer, the top (as you look at it) left black strip (antenna) was unaturally warm, the side metal where the sim is was hot and also the back mid to base was rather warm. I terminated the back up as I did not want to fry it. Something to look out for! I just want to say I moved from a windows phone HTC, I must say I love this 4s and a big thank you to apple for having a go at sorting my problems out. Things go wrong it's a fact of life, it's how companies and people deal with your issues that count, I am 100% happy with what they have done for me, I actually feel confident with my move to apple and they will sort it all out. Big thanks to everyone on here who has tried to help to!! Excellent constructive feedback from some members on here!! :-)))))

    Hello All,

I had the same issue where my battery life was rapidly depleated, I check my settings and notice so many options enabled! for instance bluetooth is enabled by default so I started turning things off and my battery life is much better. As far as AppleCare not knowing about a statement release from the CEO, I would have to say that everytime I call I get a person from different locations everytime, so maybe with all those employees they just don't notice those statements.

    Good luck

I agree, they are trying, it's a very small number, but at least they listen if you talk to them on the phone, most companies with a small number like this try and brush it under the carpet :-)
