Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I chose to upgrade from the iPhone 4 and the battery life and my service on sprint have been a let down. My battery life on my iPhone 4 was amazing! I agree with the comment about turning things off. I purchased this phone so I would be able to have all of these great features yet now I am told I have to "turn things off" to have battery life like my 4?? I love my 4S and Siri and the new camera. The battery life on the other hand is a let down.

Im posting here only so that Apple can see another person with these problems. I hope they can fix this. One of the main reasons I buy iPhones is for the better battery life over android.

So explain why folks with the iphone 4 and who upgraded to ios5 are having battery problems too? Can't be a hardware issue then. My son has the 3GS and his battery went to crap after I upgraded his phone to ios5.

Like you said most that don't use it heavily like we do probably don't even notice. Half probably don't even have the percentage on because by default it is off so all those casual users will probably not notice.

    Oh WOW!

    I just found the fix!

It is so simple I could not believe it.  Basically all you have to do is leave well enough alone and Apple will release a fix for this within the next week or two.

I could not believe I spent so much wasted time trying this or trying that.

This is my second post on this thread and I can say that I have tried all the recipes listed and tried my own stuff. All in all my battery is draining at lightning speed and I’m starting to suspect a hardware issue rather than an IOS bug.

This is the truth, but if 0.0001% of 4S has problems, I think that the issue is not a bug in IOS 5 but a batch of bad batteries....... if the problem is a bug in IOS the percent should be Higher.......

I've been browsing this discussion since day one and this is my very first post to the forum.  Both my wife and I are experiencing the battery issues, as well as three of my co-workers and one personal friend.  That's six people who don't post here - or anywhere really - experiencing battery issues.

Personally, I think the number of people who are viewing and/or posting to this thread is quite high.

I didn't want to be another "me too" commentor, but your post - as well as Apple's "...a small number of customers.." comment have struck a nerve.

Yay!  I can go get a new iPhone 4S this weekend!  I figured that as soon as Apple acknowledged the issue, I was safe to go get the phone.  The chances of it impacting me are minimal and even if it does, Apple intends to fix it.

That's what I'm really looking forward to.  Support.  Unlike what most of the other manufacturers are doing (i.e. Samsung with the Verizon Fascinate), Apple intends to actually support a device they released not just move on to the next thing.  After being burned by Samsung with this phone, I'll gladly join the "iSheep" herd and jump on the iPhone bandwagon.  At least I know the manufacturer gives a crap about the customer and supporting the device they've produced rather than churning out a buggy piece of garbage every couple of weeks, giving a couple of minimal updates and moving onto the next device...

I've made two observations about the whole android vs. iPhone thing and in both regards, iPhone comes out on top:

    1.  handset manufacturers are turning out new android-powered devices literally every week.  This is bad because as the consumer, you will never feel as if you've got something "new".  Consumers don't want to go plop down $200-$400 on a new device just to find out in one week that there's something bigger and better out.  With the iPhone you don't have this.  Critics of apple will say that they don't always include all of the latest technology and perhaps they don't but you know what?  At least if I buy an iPhone I know that there's not going to be a better one out in a week.

    2.  building off of #1, with the manufacturers producing a new device every week, they are falling short in terms of support.  Sure you can find someone with something negative to say about everything but search "Thunderbolt problems" or "<insert newest android handset name here> problems".  You'll never be able to decide on a new handset because they ALL have MAJOR flaws.  At least with the iPhone, there is 1 flaw.  one flaw that Apple intends to correct.  That's what I expect when I pay top dollar for a new device.

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but my battery was more or less going from full charge to empty in 12 hours (fairly heavy use, but no more than my old 3gs).

I've now turned off the setting Time zone option under settings -> location services -> system services and I have 52% battery life left  right now - having been using the phone for checking twitter and listening to music for most of the day.

Basically, I've noticed a massive improvement. So this is probably one of a few bugs that ios 5 has at the moment (I noticed this one as this setting was constantly using location services).

It might not solve it for some of you guys, but for me it has worked. I have push email, siri, and location services all turned on and I think that with a bit more careful use I could get 48 hours between charges (nearly double that of my 3gs).

    Hope this helps someone else.

BATTERY TIP - REMOVE CALENDAR FROM NOTIFICATION CENTER

I've discovered thorugh trial and error that removing Calendar from the Notification Center saves a lot of battery life.  This is the reason why:

At my work we get lots of reschedule/cancelation notices.  What I realized is that the Notification Center gets stuck in an infinite loop where it adds/removes/adds/removes/adds/removes the appointment from your calendar.  I was going to sleep with 100% power and waking up with 45% power.  By simply making that change, instead the next night I went to sleep with 100% power and woke up with 92% power.

I have not had any battery issues since I made this change.

For users, this is a way to save your battery life.

For Apple, this may be a bug that needs to be reviewed.

For the naysayers, I did want to mention this.  I have an iPhone 4 (not a 4S), and my battery issues occured immediately after upgrading to iOS 5.  It is not an hardware issue, it is entirely a software issue.

I came from the HTC EVO (insert Boo&Hiss here) and I am somewhat disappointed with the battery life. I turned off the services that were sucking the juice, but then I cant use the best features of the phone...so that's kinda stupid. APPLE, you need to address this issue.

Iphone 4s battery life is a joke. I had iphone 3g and this had better battery life. I expect perfection from apple and hence, i dont tolerate any mistakes in any shape or form. They are charging premium prices and so naturally ppl do expect premium service. Didnt they learn anything from that "death grip" issue on the iphone 4 !? If the update which according to apple should fix the problem doesnt fix the issue, i will NEVER buy any iphones ever again. I am extremely angry about this whole thing... They should give us free itunes vouchers to every iphone 4s customers !!!!!

I haven't read all 200+ pages of this post (good grief), but wanted to add my $0.02 to the fray.  I manage all the phones here at my medium sized company, and out of the seven iPhone 4s phones I setup, one had the battery issues described.

The solution?  Turn off his push sync for his company email (Microsoft Exchange Active Sync), and the phone is just fine.  Not sure what part of push sync is eating the battery, but I wiped the phone to factory and the battery was fine for hours, but as soon as Exchange sync was added, battery started dying again.

Doesn't get much more obvious than that, so I guess for now I just wait for Apple to fix the problem?

I wrote my post as an answer to another one who speaks about official comments by apple and the supposed percentage of customers with problems...... don't misunderstand me, I found ridiculous too.... that even a very small percent of customers can have problems with a device with this price......

Maybe this is not a forum for ipad2 but after ios5 upgrade, my battery is going down like never. In sleep-mode overnight, it drained from 57% to 19%.

    Did the following so far:

    • Stopped all running apps
    • Turned off all notifications
    • Switched to Fetch (every hour) for all my mailboxes
    • Restored to Factory Settings (did a backup prior to the restore and reverted to the backup)

No luck so far. But I think I found a clue... for some reason, the calendar notification that pops on my lock-screen has been flickering (refreshing maybe 30 times per sec or something like that). Smells of some kind of an infinite loop (no pun). Never seen this problem before. So this time I really went into all notifications and turned them off and now am charging my device... keeping my fingers crossed.

For now I think I need to power down the device at night to have some sanity when I wake up.

    FWIW.
