Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    Hi Guys.

Just look at two next screens :

    1.

    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/166/16625443-1.jpg

    2.

    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/166/16625443-2.jpg

At both of screens we have the same standby time , but very different usage time and usage of battery and what a different in setting of phone was made ?!!! I just configured the fetch of email to manual mode , that's all !!! Nothing more !!! I have to return and tell  everyone : the iOS5 has the big problem with fetch setting of  time in email accounts . Most of us (maybe everyone) have one or two or more  emails accounts in the phone with some different fetch setting , but the problem that the set of time for fetch don't work properly.

This is probably because iCloud was set to push. iCloud has to be set manually, even if u set fetch email, u gotta go in the advanced menu and set icloud to stop being push.

On my iPhone i can remove the email accounts and i still have a 4% drop every 3 hours of standby, same as i have with email accounts on (and icloud set to fetch).

    I can test that..

If i remove my icloud account, then re enable it later on, will i lose all my contacts?

My new iPhone 4s has battery lid similar, if not worse than my older 3GS.  I've tried to make sure I don't charge it too much,  to keep the battery memory intact, but it just doesn't last when I'm using it all day.  I have to charge my battery a little bit here and there to make sure my phone doesn't die on me. Went to bed last night with 100% charge, woke up this morning at 91%, even my 3GS didn't drain like that.  "Did Siri invite all her friends over for a party." Then talked on the phone for 30 minutes, power down to 71%.  Really?  This was supposed to be better.

Well last night I bit the big one, registered my phone as a developer and installed ios 5.0.1 beta.  Problem is NOT resolved.  I am in the northeast and have had no power or heat for 6 days now.  I have a 3 month old baby at home and I need my phone as an alarm. Also in case the baby has an emergency it would be great to be able to make a call. I coughed up the cost because I just spent 80 bucks on a mophie battery case just to get it to last through the night.  I watched my battery drop 5 percent in less than 40 min on my way to work.  All apps were shut down and I didnt touch the phone. The only thing I have disabled is itunes and ping. Everything else I use or need and refuse to turn off.  I didnt buy a sweet 64 gig iphone 4s to just make calls. Ive restored twice, redid all my mail acounts, disabled lift to speak for siri, turned off time zone settings and basically have tried everything.  Was hoping the update would solve the issue.

I'm so fed up with this.  Bought this phone to take abroad with me and use in a marathon.  It will not even last the 5 hours that I will be running!  I need to keep the tracker app on and play music.  Very upset that I will not be able to contact my family after my race to find me because my battery will be dead.  Come on Apple - you will lose your good name if this continues.  This phone should never have been released!!

Not to take away anything from you're issues, but I hardly believe that Apple would come out and say that they've "solved" the issue if in fact they didn't feel like they had.  It's typically why they are so slow to respond in the first place.

My personal experience has shown a few things.

I was having horrible issues.  I have bumped around all sorts of different settings (I'll go through my settings below), and can now get 4+ hours of usage with 16-18 hours of standby and still have 30% or so of battery life.  I would say about 1/3rd of my usage is on Wi-Fi, the other 2/3rds is in 3G coverage of moderate strength 2-4 bars, rarely if ever full coverage.  The biggest "improvement" I was able to make was allowing the battery to recalibrate by completely discharging and then fully recharging.  I played Angry Birds for almost an hour with the battery on 1% before it finally shutdown, so there was obviously something not quite right there.

    My Settings for 32GB AT&T 4S:

    • Restored from iPhone 4 backup using iCloud on Wi-Fi
    • Wi-Fi On, no ask to join

Everything else is set up however it was setup as default.

I am now very happy with my phone's battery life.  I'm unhappy that I had to turn some of these features off, but will look forward to the iOS5 updates addressing those items that are causing issues.

I have been experiencing terrible battery life.  I have adjusted all of the settings, (turned off location services, wifi, screen brightness and all the other recommended fixes)  My battery is still draining so quickly.  The phone is at 100% in the morning.  I turn it to airplane mode for my hour long commute and just listen to music on shuffle.  By the time I get to work, it is in the low 80s.

I went to the Genius bar yesterday, and the guy reset my phone and told me that I had "bugs in my e-mail and some apps."  I was hopeful that this would correct the problem but so far, the battery is still draining rapidly.  They also told me that they haven't been hearing of battery issues with the 4s.  This must be a blatent lie, because I went to the NYC flagship store.  There is no way I'm the only one in Manhattan having these issues.  I feel like they were just saying that to brush me off.  So, for you smart computer people out there, is this "bugs in your apps" statement valid?  I'm new to Apple products and not very computer savy so I don't really know how to take that comment.  Any advice would help. Thanks!

In the meantime hope this supposed software update takes care of this issue...

Are you seriously saying that you have a baby and the only alarm clock in the house is your malfunctioning iPhone? When you say "you need your phone as an alarm" what you really mean is that you would like to use your phone for an alarm. but can't; not quite the same thing. You could of course just buy a cheapo alarm clock on your way to work...

It's not your battery that's the problem here. While your phone is charging, it's also running something causing the CPU to use up battery. So as your charger is putting charge into your battery, your CPU is draining it in a rather fast rate.

Consider doing a Reset Network Settings and letting your phone charge up -- you only lose wifi settings which hopefully you can redo. While you're at it, you may even want to let the phone drain completely after a full charge to calibrate your battery meter.

Since apple is saying only a "small number of customers have reported" battery problems, I would like to report that my iphone 4s has terrible battery life that is comparable to my recent 3gs iphone, and that 3 of my coworkers have reported the same thing.

The phone is awesome though, no other complaints yet except the terrible battery life.

is it good or bad ?

i hardly used the phone. no mails, no location service, no 3g, no weather service, just games.

whats da point of buying a 499 pounds iphone which u only can play games and using other will drain your battery level like **** ?

Is it good? Is it bad? Hard to say when you gave no description of how your phone is set up. But just from the numbers you posted, and the fact that the phone is generally rated to last 6-8 hours on full use (except for music-only usage, which should go for 40 hours), I'd say there's nothing out of the ordinary with your phone. I played family feud last night. In about 15-20 minutes of gaming time, it drained the battery 10% (the game uses 3D). That's a ridiculous amount of drainage on the battery for such little game time, but makes perfect sense because games are CPU/GPU intensive. Is it a poor battery? No -- it's poor game programming causing the CPU/GPU to drain lots of energy.

We use PUSH.  It causes the same problem.

Set Mail to MANUAL and battery life improves.

Turn off auto Locations services and battery life improves.

Mail will connnect and sync when opened.  However, notice the blue circle progress icon in the top left of the screen.  On my phones it keeps running constantly, killing the battery.  Once you close Mail, make sure you kill the app on the phone to stop it from trying to connect with the data service.
