Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I have been contributing to this thread and finally went in to exchange my original pre order on the off chance it was hardware related. I received an exchange that had a different set of problems: headset jack would not be recognized in voice call only ( i could literally switch to music player etc and no problem),  whenever I added a mail account it would continue to complain about invalid password even though it had been succseffuly added, and my console log showed some strange messages about processor pins not asserting. So, back to the apple store for another replacement. My third phone (which might possibly had been a previous return as there were no apple stickers in the box but appeared new in all other ways including an original box), knock on wood, seems good. I am not getting the phantom usage, my error logs are empty, and I am on starting my first full recharge cycle. So, we will see but initially this phone is performing noticeably better than my original phone.

    To OcnewB and Quasar959,

Do you have WiFi sync turned on? I have noticed on my phone that when I leave this setting 'on', my phone drains with no other usage over night. I'm thinking it's trying to maintain a connection with my iMac over the wifi network so that it's 'ready' to sync, even though it isn't plugged in to a power supply.

I notice from your report than  data used  is approximatively the half of standby.time .

Same for me on my iphone 4S 64 gb . Starting from 100% charge and doing Nothing

with my phone, after 2 hours, used data is 1 hour ond standby 2 h. remaining charge is 95 %.

All suggestions about settings have been made. I also totaly  swith off: siri , notifications

location service and disable my mails accounts.

Doing the same test on my previous iphone4 also ugraded to IOS5 gives results very différent:

After full charge and 2 hours later, data used is reported very low ( 3 minutes)  and of course

    standby 2 hours.

Settings are the same . remaining charge is still 99%.

Is someone could tell me if he got same results for ratio used/standby 2 hours later a full

    charge and doing NOTHING

    thanks for reply

Got my phone exchange yesterday and the battery issue seems fine now. The Appel tech gave me a different way of resting the phone...

    Plug your phone in itunes

Turn it off until itunes doesn't see it

Press both the lock and home buttons for 8 seconds

Then release the lock button but keep pressing de home button

This will reset from scratch and reinstall ios.

Important, do not restore your phone from back up after. Treat it like new an re-input every settings manually.

Yes. I have the same here in Germany. If I put my phone down for an hour, standby-time show 1 hour and usage-time about 30 min.

I hope the update fixes this....

I figured out the problem and it is so simple.  I can't believe i haven't figured it out sooner.  Plug the phone into your computer.  Open iTunes.  Uncheck the box in the summary tab that says "sync phone over WiFi".  When you do this, whenever your phone goes to sleep, the WiFi connection is dropped.  When this box is checked, the WiFi connection is maintained in sleep mode thus draining your battery super fast.  It is a pain in the *** having your phone reconnect to WiFi every time that you wake up your phone; but this will DEFINITELY save a whole lot of battery life.

Here is a screenshot of my stats. I believe the culprit is iCloud. Everything related to iCloud is turned off and I had 20% left on my phone after 2 days and it didn't drop even 0.1% over the night. But I do have to say I have lot of things turned off.

    Thank for your report.

even in aiplane mode with all communications stopped it's the same.

I don't understand why my previous iphone 4 updated to ios5 is very different.

after 2 hours of inactivity data used is only 2 or 3 minutes....

hope for a fix sooner than in a few weeks.....

@WildPhillyBob, I'm not sure syncing over WiFi is the problem as this feature requires that the iOS 5 device is plugged in to charging power before the sync will occur. http://www.pcworld.com/article/242242/how_to_use_wireless_sync_in_ios_5.html

When I activate the airplane mode, only the standby-time is running... Maybe we have a software update quite soon, because the 5.01 beta 2 is already seeded.

I love my iPhone 4S. Just by launching an app it fell down from 9% to 4% and just by calling, waiting for my friend to answer, it went down from 74% to 70%... Hope the 5.0.1 update will fixe everything...

@renoperk - My iPhone 4 running IOS 5 connects to iTunes and tries to sync when it's not plugged in.

This is my 4S. I can't make it pase 3h 45Min of usage no matter what I do. If 3G or GPS has to be used it drops at 1% every 2 minutes. If I make a call, it drops 1% every 2 minutes. I have tried every trick in the book. Everything off, restore as new, location off, iCloud off, etc. The back of the phone gets slightly warm after a couple of minutes of use. It has gotten progressively worse since I got the phone 5 days ago. I am taking it back.

I have phone 4 and 4s. I've fully charged both and compared usage on both. I've switched off most function on 4s and left everything running on iphone 4. The battery is still much better on the ip4. The 4s seems to lose power even in standby.

Strangely I had to exchange my first ip4 because of a faulty battery.

I hope the update cures the 4s or I'll also have to take that back.
