Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

i have 4s 64gb time zone turned off, location services except for siri turned off. notifications turned off for everything but messages. mail and all that ish turned off. i am getting pretty good battery life, not as good as the 4 but still better than a droid. i am getting about 4-6 hours of usage and by 1 am in the morning im still above 35 % at least.

Hey guys just throwing in another example.

I was at work while reading through this after noticing that almost ever time i looked at my phone i was "in the red" and charging took a while.

I ran a very basic test on my break. The results were a little shocking.

I charged for 12 minutes before my break.

My phones charge incread from 25% to 31%

(i had already followed suggestions about location services reminders and logs to apple yada yada yada)

    i went on a 30 minute break..

    Used sire twice,

    Set a 30 minute timer

sent and received a total of 8 messages (imessages for the most part)

Was on wifi the whole time

Loaded and read 6 web pages (small ones)

Checked the news updated then facebook (as you do..)

and played a simple game which does not use internet and is not intensive on graphics for like 6 mins

At the end of this break i had lost 16% of my battery life....

    I did some simple calculations..

12 mins charging gave 6% // times that by 2.5 and in half an hour the phone would charge 15%

Yet in half an hour my phone lost 16% of battery.

This means that at the current rate i4S users on iOS5 must spend more time with their 400 quid phone charging than actually using it!

    A little unnacceptable??

with most things off I've managed to get usage 3hrs 54mins and standby 1day 18hrs and it's still at 41%.

When the battery runs out I'm going to record the stats with everything on.

But you should not have to turn all these items off! They stated 6 hours 3G browsing. I can't hit 4 hours of anything. I have a feeling the fix will be for idle drain, not usage.

i'm yet another person this has affected with the 4s

when i first got the phone and restored it from a back up from my previous 3gs everyting was fine. the battery life was awsome, coouldnt believe it, could watch an entire film and only about 10% of the battery go if that.

recently the battery has got worse and worse. im now losing 50% of the battery in 10 hours on standby, thats not using the phone at all apart from waking it up to check the battery a few times. so around 20 hrs and the phone is dead, 180 less then apple say the standby should be.

i tried the usual of turning everything off, and i mean everything from turning the screen brigtness to minimum, wi-fi, gps, bluetooth, aall my notification, location services, icloud, isync, literially everything so that all i could possibly do was talk and text and no difference whatsoever.

    very dissapointed.

if this bug is the cause then how/why is it only affecting people now? i mean my phone came with the IOS5 software so surely this should have been happening from the start?

It *****, spent £500 for another one of apples toys, again the company fails to make a product that has a battery that lasts.

Blackberry, Nokia even SAMSUNG can sell a smart phone with less power hunger...

    Apple hit your R&D department...

A few pages ago, this guy Hdradaza (and also the Australian guy posting just after him) gave his complete configuration and he was right on par with the 6 hours usage and the 6 hours didn't seem contiguous. If I had a troublesome phone, I would start by a factory reset+restore to new, fully emulate the guy's config, then I would play video to drain the device to total shutoff. Then I would charge the device to 100% making sure the device is off. I would use it until 0% noting my usage time and seeing if I have a major drain during standby. Then I would change settings/add apps not more than one at a time per full charge cycle to see if I can isolate the problem. I would not charge the device before it fully shuts off at 0% and would note time required for a full 100% charge. I would note usage time again and pay attention to drain. I know it's unbearable. Plus I would always charge the device off or on airplane mode after that. As soon as I know I'm not touching the device for some hours I would put it in airplane mode. If I see a major drain during standby or airplane mode, I'd exchange the device for a new one.

I mean it's possible there are some defective units on top of there being some issue with IOS. I think yes it's quite likely Apple will focus on drain during standby because that's the reason why the 6hours become contiguous with mixed usage. Someone claiming 2-3 days of use before charge is someone using a the phone as a flip phone or what I call a "stoic" user... i.e. 2-3 hours use then shutoff until next day and in both cases someone who has no standby draining.

I think with everything off in airplane mode untouched if you are losing more than 1% per hour you have a defective phone.

Your process will work for finding the culprit but man that takes a long time.

It's way too long I know and the process may not even be fully completed by the time 5.0.1 is released lollll.

Your 1% claim seems fair but if you have an app that's not network centric but let's say "recycle" itselfs badly or loops or such, then the result may be different and it may not be the phone, I think. It is unlikely but still possible. It's really hard to isolate a variable on this type of phone.

    Anyways. Good luck to all!

Finnaly i decided to follow that E-WIRE have written:

Got my phone exchange yesterday and the battery issue seems fine now. The Appel tech           gave me a different way of resting the phone...

              Plug your phone in itunes

Turn it off until itunes doesn't see it

Press both the lock and home buttons for 8 seconds

Then release the lock button but keep pressing de home button

This will reset from scratch and reinstall ios.

Important, do not restore your phone from back up after. Treat it like new an re-input           every settings manually.

After wasting my time  trying many many settings without good results, i decides to

do what is written above .

MIRACLE! before i was losing at least  3 to 5 % every hour and now, after 1 h and 35 minutes,

it's still showing 100%!! . ( wifi and 3G are both ON and my 4S in stand by after recreate

and start my 2 email boxes)

I am now reinstalling apps  music etc..manually...

    Thanks to e-wire.

The idea of starting from "scratch" is indeed a good one... and it doesn't take a magazine to figure it out.

I just hope for you that after you reinstall everything you don't end to with the same scenario as before

    Good luck!

I ABSOLUTELY assure you that although syncing is not taking place, the phone maintains the WiFi connection thus eating your battery. Test out my theory. You will see that I am right.

I completely drained my battery on the 4S yesterday and put it on charge (switched off the phone).

Today after 18 hours of full charge from wall socket removed the phone from wall socket charger and reset all settings to factory default then turned off Bluetooth and all location services.

In Notification I only left the following:

    Weather Widget

    Phone

    Messages

    Reminders

    Game Center

    MSN Messenger

    WhatsApp

    StockWidget

    Mail

    eBay

    PayPal

    G+

    Calendar

    Tube Deluxe

    Trapster

    Viber

The WiFi was also left on.

Took the phone off at 16:00 and made moderate use including a 5min phone call, checking emails. No videos no photography and no games.

at 18:00 (after 2 hours of use) the battery was at 70%

Thats 15%/hour giving a total of 6.6hours at best !!!

I am going to try the above suggestion of starting from scratch and if that does not work for me the phone is going back to Apple and I will downgrade to my iPhone4 it's a shame because i like the camera on this one.
