Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Why would you downgrade? Apple clearly knows the issue, and are working around the clock to fix this. I am in no rush, bugs like this happen all the time. The new update that they are working on went out to beta testers, and will soon be available to us.

Why are you people so jumpy on trying to resolve the issues yourselves when Apple knows what's going on? Just wait for Apple to release an update.

I have my IPhone 4s for 5 days now and I love the features but what is going on with its battery? I use it for 15 min a day tops. I have everything switched off and it lasts for 20-22 hours. I have never had in my long life a phone that does not survive till tomorrow. Common, this must be a joke! I think I’ll have to return it while it’s not too late

    Guys,

Apple has accepted this as a bug which means its software related.

It's waste of time to restore the phone in itunes. Maybe ypu feel there is a positive result but it will not solve the issue.

So dont waste your time trying the millions advices in this thread and wait for the new sw release instead

As recommended by rogerfromfrance in this forum on 05-Nov-2011 10:39

    • I plugged in my phone (iTunes on PC)
    • Pressed the power button and switched off the phone
    • Then pressed and held power and home buttons together
    • Let go of power button after 8 seconds while still holding the HOME button
    • iTunes recognized the phone in recovery mode and instructed to restore the phone.
    • I released the HOME button
    • Accepted to Restore and Upgrade the phone.
    • iTunes downloaded the IOS5 and began installing
    • Firmware was upgraded and phone restarted by iTunes
    • On the phone screen when prompted I selected the region settings
    • Location services were not selected at this stage "Disable Location Services"
    • On iTunes I chose not to restore from Backup and selected "Setup as a new iPhone"
    • Gave the iPhone a new name and unticked all Auto Sync options on iTunes
    • logged into iPhone using Apple ID
    • Chose not to use iCloud on iPhone
    • Selected not to use Siri
    • Chose not to send Diagnostics & Usage information
    • Pressed "Start using iPhone"
    • Ejected iPhone from iTunes and disconnected the plug
    • On the iPhone from settings turned off the Bluetooth (it was on by default)

I am going to test it out and will report back in any case.

In response to the above posts the reason I am taking advice and ideas on this forum is because if these do not work I will return the phone while still in my 1st 14 days period and wait for Apple to fix the bug. If indeed the software update fixes the issue then i can always purchase it again as I don't really have money to waste.

I agree we should try apples fix when made available, but some of us only have 14 days to return the phone. If the fix does not come out within our 14 days AND it does not fix the battery issue we are not going to be happy. Between a rock and a hard place. My 14 days runs out on November 13th....

I completely drained my battery on the 4S yesterday and put it on charge (switched off the phone).

Today after 18 hours of full charge from wall socket removed the phone from wall socket charger and reset all settings to factory default then turned off Bluetooth and all location services.

In Notification I only left the following:

    Weather Widget

    Phone

    Messages

    Reminders

    Game Center

    MSN Messenger

    WhatsApp

    StockWidget

    Mail

    eBay

    PayPal

    G+

    Calendar

    Tube Deluxe

    Trapster

    Viber

The WiFi was also left on.

Took the phone off at 16:00 and made moderate use including a 5min phone call, checking emails. No videos no photography and no games.

at 18:00 (after 2 hours of use) the battery was at 70%

Thats 15%/hour giving a total of 6.6hours at best !!!

I am going to try the above suggestion of starting from scratch and if that does not work for me the phone is going back to Apple and I will downgrade to my iPhone4 it's a shame because i like the camera on this one.

Wifi use drains about 11% an hour. Then add on top of that normal battery drain for being off the charger, and a ton of notifications. I think your expectations are a bit high even for a perfectly working battery.

I guess we are all learning to manage the battery better through this experience, I've certainly learned a lot just by going through and testing different things, a few hours ago on my 4s I had bad battery drain, now it's quite reasonable, I played around with a lot of setting so I am not fully sure what fixed it but I would say firstly turning everything off, restarting the phone, and enabling the features again after restarting may have done it, secondly and in my case more likely, I went into the iCloud section in settings and realised that I wasn't logged in properly, so I logged in, btw I don't use iCloud right now, not for anything, it's all set to off and has been from the start, however before all this, I was getting a large portion of my locked/standby time registering as usage time. Now it doesn't at all, so maybe it was constantly trying to log into iCloud even while locked, even though I'm not syncing anything to it, seems it still likes you to be logged in. The other thing I tried was leaving mobile data off for an hour, turn it on again and restart.

I've now gone from watching my battery percentage plummet a percent every 2-3 mins, to having 4-7 mins instead depending on screen brightness. I've worked out medium vs max brightness drains the battery 3mins faster per percentage of battery.

I think by no means is my battery life on par with the 4s battery specs from Apple, but it's now a lot better and I'm expecting the update to make up some more ground to bring it into spec or thereabouts.

Let me know if any of this works for any of you, good luck!

After experiencing pretty poor battery life maybe 10 hrs with moderate use I've followed some of the instructions on here. By disabling some unnecessary notifications  and turning off some positioning apps including location based time I've extended the battery life again with moderate use to approx 28 hrs. I'm happy with that .

I'm not overly happy with the battery life but it has a faster processor and is bound to use up more power. As long as I get 24 hours - in other words chance to get home and charge it overnight I'm not overly worried. It's still a lovely device and i have my ip4 to fall back on. I love all things apple. Surely if it's still not sorted with the software update apple will replace or repair.

Wouldnt say the 4 is a downgrade if battery life is important. No software is going to make 4s match the 4. I have two 64 gigs here I didn't even bother to open. I love my 4!

If Apple have a fix for this they should release it. The iPhone 4S should never have been released with this bug and every day thousands of new users will be disappointed with their purchase.

Add me to the list of users with battery problems:

    iPhone 4

    iOS 5

Yesterday, after charging the phone all night, I unplugged it at 8:00 AM and the battery meter said 100%.  By 7:00 PM, the battery meter said 5%.  I had talked on the phone for a little over 60 minutes and done several emails during the day.  I used the map app for a few minutes and maybe one or two other apps for a little while.  I have Fetch turned on for my email.  All the location services are at the default setting -- which I think mean 'on.'

Before updating to iOS 5, a day like yesterday would end with the battery meter on 65-75% +/-.  The iOS 5 drain is significant.

I know Apple is working on a fix, and I am confident iOS 5 will work just fine in the future.

During an 8 hr period, 3 hrs 55 min usage and 1% battery left with screen brightness turned down and some location based services off.  Apple can u give us an extra wall charger for work and a vehicle charger so our phones actually last as long as u say.

Guys, again, until the fix is out, i strongly suggest you tey this:

    Plug your phone in itunes

Turn it off until itunes doesn't see it

Press both the lock and home buttons for 8 seconds

Then release the lock button but keep pressing de home button

This will reset from scratch and reinstall ios.

Important, do not restore your phone from back up after. Treat it like new an re-input every settings manually.
