Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Kopec & NC Kishore, how many shared calendars do you have?  What are your fetch intervals?  Are they Exchange, Apple Server or iCloud?

Even the pure clear phone after restore, without restoring the backup and setting anything outside internet 3G and WiFi, droping 1% in 10 minutes. What more can I disable? Notking...

Guys remember this phone just came out. The battery is still learning so I'd say give it some time to improve and do at least 5 full discharge and charge cycle to break it in. I'm sure with any phone you got the first few weeks of battery life was terrible then it got better.

Give it some time. We shouldnt have to turn everything off yet.

1% in 10 min is good. Now is that usage time or standby time because you don't make that clear. If it is usage time then it is good.

I write before, it is in standby - so, 1hour = 6%, 10 hours (one day autside home) = 60% of battery go away for nothing. iPhone is now like Android phone.

When you say "back up iPhone" to iCloud, are you referring to just iCloud-based apps like my mac.com mail account (and its contacts and calendars) or is there something more?  For example, I don't back up documents because I don't have any on my iPhone, but I need to turn it on for the restore process, then I'll do so.

Secondly, will a restore also bring back my various mail configurations?  I have several Exchange accounts.  Will I have to recreate them separately?

    Thanks

Did you do a reset on the network settings? Try that. It fixed my problem.

I did everything possible from restore, after disabling every possible option and reset settings - does not work. Phone no power is consumed only as it is in airplane mode, turn off WiFi and cellular data also does not work. It looks as if the same connection to the mobile network energy drained. I also have OK coverage - full 3G.

Visited the Apple store last night.  The gentleman that helped me out did a Apple Sotwear check on my iPhone and founded out that my battery shows no know issues.  Interestily, the diagnostic showed that I had 8:10 minutes of usage and 1 day and 17 hours of standby; however, my phone showed that it had been used for 4:37 minutes and standby was 1 day and 17 hours, very strange result (I wonder if the iOS is NOT showing usage as it should).  He also told me that no one needs to worry about calibrating the battery, I DONOT beilve on this, as Apple recommends on its website.  As far I'm concern, batteries need to be calibrate, but I'm open to learn otherwise.  Anyhow, the diagnostic also showed that MOBILEME and PayPal apps were quitting unexpected. I did notice PayPal quitting, but not MobileMe; however, I cannot get emails or notifications via push, I need to go into the mail app and refresh it in order to receive messages.

Anyways, he said the samething already posted on this discussion, turn off locations and things that's is not necessary.  Also, the technician suggested that it might be a glitchy in this new iOS; however, he was blaming apps for it, when on my case only one developer app showed problem, PayPal (which I deleted) and Apple's MobileMe.

Currently, my usage is 5:53 hours and standby 1 day and 19 hours. Much better then my first usage.  Apparently, the battery can improve overtime.  And if Apple fix this "glitch" we will experience much better results with this new iPhone and iOS.

    Hope it helps.

Some of you may be experiencing heavy battery drain on newly restored and set up as new iPhones. If you switch off wifi, location services and bluetooth, the phone shouldn't be using any power at all maybe 1% every couple of hours at the most. With my iPhone in this state, I was experiencing roughly a 1% drop every 18 minutes. Which was insane. I literally swapped my SIM card for my girlfriends SIM card and reset the network settings. After the reset the phone took about 2 hours to drop 1%.

My SIM came with my original iPhone 4 a year ago. Hers was brand new. It sounds silly but it made a difference.

Just wanted to post an update. I got my 4s on launch day with Verizon. It's a black 64 GB model. Restored from my Touch backup which I had upgraded to iOS5 a few days before. Was having incredible battery drain. Went from 100% to 55% in 7 hours just sitting in standby. I did all the tricks previously mentioned without relief.

What worked for me was draining the battery until the phone shut itself off (I used a flashlight app and YouTube).  I then charged overnight to 100%. With moderate use today, I'm at 66% right now with several text, emails, phone calls, GPS, and 3G web surfing. I couldn't be happier with the improvement. Give this drain and recharge a chance if you haven't previously.

I've tried most of the previous mentioned things and they have helped somewhat (I've done a DFU Restore, but I restored from an iTunes backup, not from iCloud.  I'll try the DFU restore combined with an iCloud restore after work).

Here's the latest thing that I changed and it seems to have made a difference... Go to Settings-->General-->Network, turn off Voice Roaming and Data Roaming.  After doing this, I seem to have only dropped 2% over 2 hours (that's a rate of 1% per hour).  I didn't touch my phone at all during that time and only received one text message.  Prior to that change, I was getting 3% loss per hour with light usage.

Genius Bar appointment today resulted in DFU Restore from iCloud. No difference noted since. Battery down additioanl 15% in the hour after leaving the store with moderate use (only 2 very short calls, a couple emails and a bit of surfing). That's with most location settings off, wifi off, bluetooth off, etc.

Am doing a complete drain now (for the 4th time) and going to give it one more shot.
The guy who helped me has a 4S with no similar problems.

If same problem tomorrow, will exchange for a new 4S to see if I might randomly get lucky and get one thats problem free. If that doesn't work, I'll be convinced its a bug to be fixed later and will probably get a Mophie product in the interim so my phone isn't 50% by noon and dead at the end of each work day.

I'm an Apple convert. Switched to MacBook Pro last year. This is my first iPhone (said goodbye to my trusty bberry). Must say that I'm extremely disappointed with the recent battery problems. First, MacBook pro battery life cut in half by Lion upgrade (still unresolved). Now this (still unresolved).  Unfortunate.
