Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

What sense does it make to spend a fortune on a phone that has all the best features if they must be kept turned off in order to have a reasonable battery life?

It seems to me the only way around this, if Apple does not get going on this issue, is a massive return for refunds.

    32gb Orange UK ( black )

    Ok hope this helps?

I have done a lot of what's said on here. I now turn off Mobile Data located in: Settings> General> Network> Mobile data> set it to off - I only put that on if I need to surf or require 3G, when you are on WiFi turn mobile data off - its better than airplane mode as you can recieve texts and calls, Mobile Data turned off also stops it burning the battery when in low signal areas. I managed 9hr 4min usage/18 hours ( approx ) standby until it was totally flat ( switched itself off ), that usage was surfing/texting/calls/apps and using msn some on WiFi some on 3G.

The list of changes I have done:

    Push e-mails off ( manual fetching )

I cloud - on - all other settings off - Back up off ( find my mobile is on ).

I back up to iTunes ( WiFi sync off )

Siri is on ( all functions )

    Location Services:

    Compass - on

    Diagnostics & Usage - off

    Location Based iAds - off

Mobile network services - on ( Please watch this, sometimes it gets stuck on - turn it off for a few seconds then back on should sort it )

    Setting Time Zone - off

    Traffic - off

WiFi setting switch the Ask to Join Networks to off.

I have reduced my screen brightness - so turn the Auto off and set it lower.

Apps set as required, but remember notifications etc will cost battery so just have a think if you need all of them to notify you.

I have also done 2 total drains of the battery ( to the point of it switching itself off ) and after each drain a 16 hour unbroken charge cycle.

It might not work for everyone but give it a go!

Hope it helps until the fix

F This man.  Got a new 4S with really bad battery life, drain 100% on standby over night.  Took it back to Apple and they can't figure it out so they replace it with a new one.  Now this new one have pretty much the same problem.  W . T .  F!

    2 in the row!

Apple is 'going' on this issue; they've already issued two developer builds containing bug fixes.  Translation: they are working on it.

I understand people want their phones to work perfectly right now, but please try and step back and look at the issue a little rationally.  These devices are very complex, and it takes time to identify specific problem causes, create fixes, and then to properly test so as to ensure that other functionality was not adversely impacted, and that new bugs were not introduced.  It doesn't happen overnight.

There are probably engineers at Apple working on this essentially non-stop.

It is a software issue.  Turn off iCloud for now.

Apple is working on a fix.

I have had the terrible battery life. I turned off location services, siri, lowered brightness to 33%, close applications everytime I lock the phone.

I already received a replacement iPhone from apple and this phone is just as bad if not WORST! I have it fully charged at 100% and within 5 mins of use it's down 99% already? Just sending a 2 text messages.

I paid over $400 for a phone. I expect more from Apple considering the amount of time it took to release this phone.

If they need to replace my battery with a higher capacity one they should do that. The batteries are one of the cheapest parts of the phone. It's true... what is the purpose of having all these new features if you can't turn them on without running out of battery. The phone also does get very hot while playing videos over wifi.

There also seems to be issues with antenna signal. My 3 year old iPhone 3G (not even 3GS) has better signal than this phone. SERIOUSLY! Also, we need an option to turn off 3G.

ATT has a buyers remorse plan which expires after 30 days. If you are not satisfied with your iPhone 4S i suggest returning it which is what I may do within the next few days if the update is not released.

    Suggestions for Apple:

-Implement full logging facilities for the phone... yeah like Linux logs - the full thing. To **** with *#3001#12345#* or whatever garbage code

-Implement a full fledged system monitor/battery charging app - they pay 600-800$ for the phone so you can pay 2X .99$ for them - don't be cheap.

-Reimplement the 3G toggle - users should be allowed to fully turn off 3G at will. Further they should be able to set thresholds for what is acceptable 3G i.e. this 3G strenght or 3G goes off.

-Implement per app network policy: users should be able to say "this app has web access, this one not" - instead of "having an app installed or not" - and this would greatly improve debugging, as there should be a function to suspend 3G access for all apps. So you can reenable them one at a time to see the impact on 3G, hence on battery. Further, for each app you should be able to say if it accesses 3G or wifi or both.

-Apps should have a "3G bandwidth" rating in the App Store - low/medium/high or something even more precise...

Most importantly: cut 200$ from the price of your phones. I mean how much of a premium one should have to pay for the Apple brand? 10,20%? 50%...100%... 200%???!!! Let'ts get real here. Enough of the hype. This is not a "special" device from heaven made by God. This is a mainsteam device for average people, not bling.

Finally don't you guys ever make fun of Blackberry, Android or Windows Mobile. Improve value for your users instead of litigating your way through the mobile industry and making a joke out of the patent organizations in the US.

    And good luck!

    2nd post and update.

Here is some thing that seemed to help a bit. I know others have posted this as well.

let the battery drain completely till the phone is dead and recharge it on a single charge in a wall charger.

now i am getting two days on single charge with same or little bit more usage.

Yep, do that three times for best battery performance. It is better to do it the first three charges on a new battery.

After that, do one complete cycle drain per month..

Tried both of those methods with no posotive return.  So far my phone will wind up dead after being on a wall charger all night.  And then trying to get it to turn on is a whole other mission.  For me personally my battery issues are only compounding in severity every time I go to sleep.  Wake up and the phone says it's dead and won't turn back on.  I think I can honeslty say this is probably the worst 'cell phone' I've ever used.  And that's back when we had to carry them around in a suitcase!

I'm just wondering... should usage time be the same as standby time?  That's what it shows on my 4S :/

    You crack me up.

Seriously consider what you are saying.

"Dear apple - I know that you cannot make these phones fast enough, and that the biggest limitation in your sales velocity is the speed at which you can manufacture devices.  I am aware of the fact that you sell every phone weeks before it even hits the production line, and I understand that you are inexplicably able to charge prices with margins that allow your profit to be much greater than your competitors.  It is obvious that something about your devices is so compelling to consumers that they are willing to buy your products even though they may have to wait days or weeks in order to obtain one, and despite the fact that in some cases they cost more than competing brands.  But in the interest of fairness, I urge you to voluntarily reduce your prices and profit margins for the benefit of those who cannot compete with you."

    Did I miss anything?

The answer lies in your own reasonning.

"I understand that you are inexplicably able to charge prices with margins that allow your profit to be much greater than your competitors.  It is obvious that something about your devices is so compelling to consumers that they are willing to buy your products"

It's called "hype", "bling", "marketing", "cult" and "lifestyle". Don't be a cheerleader. It's ARM, Samsung, LG and Qualcomm tech inside.

Listen, not to be overly blunt - but instead of saying the phone *****, why not take it back and get a replacement?  If what you say is true, it is obvious that your particular phone has an issue.  If you roll up into an Apple store and tell them that it is always dead after being on the charger all night, i'm pretty sure they will replace the phone, as that's an obvious hardware issue.

Are you somehow under the impression that every iPhone user has a dead phone every morning?  Think about that just for a minute - does it actually make sense?
