Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

You can turn off Cellular Data and restrict your data usage to Wifi.  It's under Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data.  However you won't have phone/SMS service.

I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE SOME OF THESE SUGGESTIONS..

    TURN OFF CELLULAR DATA?

WHAT DID WE BUY THIS PHONE FOR?

There are two groups to this battery iisue:

Group 1. The battery drains more than 1-2% per hour at idle. Some have reported up to 15% drop per hour while not using the phone. No matter what your settings are, this should not occur.

Group 2. The battery drains very rapidly while in use but does not drain rapidly in idle. I lose about 0.5% per hour while the phone is not being used. Draining 0.5% per hour is on par with what Apple claimed-200 hours of standby. While using the phone I lose 1% every 2 minutes. This gives me 3.33 hours of use-not acceptable. This is about half of what Apple claimed.

What group do you fall into?

should be in group 1. Battery drains about 3 to 5 %  per hour with phone not used

exept for sometimes where i feel my phone in my shirt's pocket is warm with no real  reason

and then batterie drops at least 10 to 15 % per hour.. This happens when i am at home with

good 3G and wifi levels. when i pull out my phone and unlock it, i sometimes notice

only 3G indicator and then only 5 to 10  seconds later , it's replaced by wifi full  bars..

Conversely, setting back cellular data on  and wifi off   (out of my home), i had to wait a long time

before my3G  network is found and sometimes i need to restart the phone to find it again.

It's the reason why i suspect something wrong with new dual antena system.

What I did to improve battery life.  Starting from the very top of the Settings menu:

    • Turn off Wi-Fi
    • Turn off Personal Hotspot
    • Remove everything from the Notification Center.  Go into each individual item and turn it off if you don't need it (set it to None).
    • Turn on Location Services.  Go into System Services at the bottom.  Turn it on for Cell Network Search and Compass Calibration, and Status Bar Icon.  Turn all other settings off.  Go back to the Location Services menu and turn it on for Maps and other apps you think may need it.  Once done, turn Location Services off.
    • Turn Carrier (Automatic) to off.  Select the carrier that you use.  Turn only that one on.
    • Brightness -> set to half,and turn on auto-brightness
    • General > Siri.  Turn Siri off.  If you really want Siri, at least turn off 'Raise to Speak' just in case.
    • General > Bluetooth.  Turn Bluetooth off.
    • Restrictions > Turn off Ping and iTunes store (doesn't really matter)
    • Date & Time > Turn everything off, set your time manually
    • iCloud > Turn everything off.
    • Mail,Contacts,Calendar > Reduce the number of active accounts you sync (preferably to one).  Set Fetch New Data to Push, and pick the 'Manually' option below.  Go into Advanced and make sure your email account is Push.
    • Mail,Contacts,Calendar > Calendars at the bottom of the screen, turn Time Zone Support off
    • Messages > turn off iMessage

Go through the rest of your apps, checking each and every one, turning them to off if you don't use them.  Once complete, turn the phone off and turn it back on.

After I fully discharged my 4S a few times, battery life has been nothing short of amazing.

I wasn't replying to you.  I never said this was an option to save power.

3G will use up battery power even if you have wifi on because your phone has to maintain an intermittent connection. That's the price you pay for having something on even if you don't use it (like turning on the lights in another room while you're in the living room watching tv -- you pay more on your electric bill). The only reason to have it on is so you don't have to fiddle with the settings when you're out of wifi range -- just like how you would not have to turn on the light switch when you enter that other room.

As for CPU usage, you're not seeing -- at that particular moment when you used your cpu activity software -- the processes that get run on a schedule (e.g. reminders, calendars, email notifications, location updates, etc). Those eventually add up, and you will see this added to your usage time. This is why most phones won't ever have a usage of 0% even if they truly were never used by anyone the entire time.

I undestand your arguments  but i find difficult to accept the big difference from my iphone4

upgraded to  IOS5. Why ? only because a powerfull CPU ? Hard to believe.

I have done the same trick: discharged mi iPhone 4S a few times, exactly 4 times. This last cycle give me Usage: 5 hours and 23 minutes and Stand by: 1 day 7 hours. I've just turn Siri off 'cause I'm in Mexico and I can wait for it. And Time Zone localization was turned off too.

cherrybombaz has charged his phone since his last full charge. It's not a true indicator. See the line on his screen

"iPhone has been plugged in since the last full charge"

No way it would last that long, but nice try

Don't forget, the device is rated as 40 hours - music. So if you turn everything off, remove all apps and put it in airplane mode and use it as a mp3 player, 40 hours is possible!!!

    Guys and Gals,

    Please help me to understand

    Let me give my scenario:

    55% Battery

Usage: 2 hours and 26 minutes

Standby: 10 Hours and 50 minutes

    Is that GOOD? BAD?

My question is: Do I need to ask Apple for a HW replacement or not?

    thanks

Simple. It's a 6-7hrs 3G internet device. Let it drain to shutoff, then recharge to 100%. Then when you come back from work, browse web, text, and browse more web until you go to bed. Browse and browse and mail and all stuff that's network centric i.e. FB, Twitter update, etc. So that would simply mean that reaching some 3 hours and being at 50% sounds reasonable and that's what you have. Others can confirm. Of course, that depends on the type of usage you did in those hours.

I've figured out that having my phone exchanged helped a lot.

My problems were a lot more extreme than most descriptions I've seen though. I was losing around 10% battery an hour on standby. The "usage" reported in Settings>General>Usage was always greater than 50% of the standby number. I could take a 100% charged phone, leave it in my pocket doing nothing for 4 hours, and upon checking the usage it would report that usage was 2.5 hours with 4 hours standby, and the battery would have decreased to 55%.

After trying everything I got the phone replaced and the new phone seems much better. A few hours of standby now drain the battery by just a few percent.

(everything = many iterations of location services on/off and other settings optimisations, resetting all settings, restoring the phone, restoring the phone from dfu mode and running with 0 additional apps, no email and no contacts. I even tried the latest beta builds of iOS 5.0.1, but nothing helped that phone)
