Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Go to SETTINGS ...LOCATION SERVICES ...all the way to the bottom of the page ...SYSTEM SERVICES ...SETTING TIME ZONE -> OFF

Problem solved, normal iPhone 4 battery life restored for 4S

Whilst you're about it, set STATUS BAR ICON to ON and then you can see when any location service is active.

I just want to drop in and thanks everybody for all of the effort you guys made in order to improve the battery life. I really suspected there were certain phones had bad battery life. I did try all of the tricks I could to save mine and watched its battery life draining out like a thirsty dragon. By the way, I did reset my twice. drained out completely and made it full charge. Nothing helped. Stand by was a little bit improved after the second reset. I turned off everything. No push emails, no notification, location services off including all of the apps inside location service, no iCloud. Basically nothing at all. However, the minute I woke the phone and did browsing, the battery drained like water sucking into the hole. My phone is always warm to the touch. 4 minutes watching on you tube I could feel the heat coming out from the front of the phone. So I decided to return the phone and wait a little. I love this phone but I am so afraid of the idea killing the battery by charging too much. I also had a Mophie case too.

I am sorry that I don't have anything to contribute for the help of reserving the battery. I just want to thank and report the problem of my iPhone. To me, it is simple, elegant, and sophiticated. And I understand that I should expect in any new device, there is always a small percentage of defected products. I firmly believe Apple can fix this problem not only for the customers' sake but also for the Company's reputation in the future. Nobody wants to pay so much money for a piece of device that won't work as it is supposed to.

    Let's hope and be patient.

I used my 4S down to about 21% last night. Charged it overnight, this morning I placed a couple of calls, used Siri, and checked emails. Still at 100% and it has been on for about an hour now.

I've lost 13% by doing little more than sending a few emails, and playing a game for a few mins. This is ridiculous

    Hi,

I am facing a very exact problem of battery getting drained for no reasons.

I charged my iphone to 100% and kept it as it is, No apps running nothing, (There might be some background apps running) but after 1 hour or so when i checked battery was drained down to 90%.

    Hi,

Has anybody thougt about the possibility that all those problems are generated by a virus, trojan or som other bad code? It seems like there are a lot of different scenarios leading to this Battery draning issues. This could be why not all users are having the same problems. Some are not affected at all after upgrading to IOS 5.

Some scenarios that we are facing: Iphone4 IOS 4.x.x battery drain, Iphone4 IOS 4.x.x frozen Interface + battery fail, Iphone 4 upgraded to IOS 5 battery fail, Ipone4 IOS 5 Battery fail + frozen interface and so on...

All are really behaving as if the IOS platform is hacked, perhaps through Itunes or from AppStore. Will Apple ever admit that the platform has been compromized if this is the issue here???

    @umairz

Please don't throw out your phone. If you do, can you throw it all the way to Atlanta? Then you don't have at least something to play with. I quite agreed with battery behavior in the iPhone 4S. You did one reset. It was fine. Then the next couple hours or days, it was acting up like somebody sticked the needle in it. I used to look at my phone, laughed, and told myself what now? Because I had no way to predict how it was going to behave. Then the second reset, it acted different.

So there is also the possibility like Bjarnes Magazine suggested. There might be a virus.

this is the best answers so far in this thread

Guys it is what it is.... dont get ilusions

I also fit in the category of decent standby times (1/2%) per hour, but when i use the phone, God help me...i get drains of 10% just sending / receiving 10sms or 10 whatsapp msgs the phone heats up in texting, the iphone4 did the same thing and lost 2% at max.

This was the last time i rushed in buying something in the first week, now i am stuck whit this battery suck phone

the antena gate on the iphone4 was way less a problem to me than this battery drain problem.

Its more than obvious that the battery is the same on i4 and i4s and the dual core ***** twice as much doing the same things i did.

Apple threw sand to our eyes stating the 3g conversation +1 hour in the 4s, and i got carried away whit the new features and didnt even noticed the 100hour standby reduction.

Now here is what is going to happen:

1-For the standby drainers the issue will be resolved in the update

2-for the ones who get exagerated usage drain, the only way to get decent battery usage, is Apple to underclock the cpu sacrificing speed but increasing the battery life bigtime. i dont believe this will happen since the A5 is speed turned, they not will consider any of this also. i wish i had an option like i had in the past to turn on/off 3g.

they could also manage to use single core in basic functions like texting, calls, browsing around and use the dual core only in 3d stress apps or any other speed needed apps. this option is way more complex i dont believe this will happen also.

So dont get illusions about the battery getting better, and this is from a new battery, i wonder 1 year from know, how will the battery deal whit the dual core, when its tired and over 1000 cycles.

these are the options, so get them into your head guys

I have had my 4s 64 for about 4 weeks now and the battery drain is becomming a concern. It seems to drain power during the night - as I woken up on several occasions now, to a dead phone!!!

However I think reseting the phone may help (simply powering down then back on). Take the following for example:

Last night I finished using the phone at about 11:30pm at 58% battery level. Woke up this morning at 7:00am to find battery had depleted to 21% - that's 37% in 7:30 hours or nearly 5% per hour! All apps were closed.

I charged the phone up this morning and it was fully charged at about 12:15pm. After taking the phone off charge, I closed all apps then reset the phone (simply powering down then back on). Its now been 2 hours and it is still reading 100%. - Needless to say I have not used it yet, other than to check the battery level, it's just sat in standby.

It's worth metioning that all settings are the same as they were last night:

    • Location services off
    • Push email off
    • Bluetooth on
    • Wifi on
    • Data on

I will try reseting the phone tonight before I go to bed to see if this makes a difference - if it doesn't maybe my 4s or Siri starts partying while i'm asleep!!!!

Or it could simply be a software problem, lets hope 5.0.1 comes out soon!

    @prkgs982

This is an interesting discovery that there might be a virus, hmm! Well I hope not! And yeah I am going to try another rest tonight and see what happens!

p.s.If i'll throw my phone out I 'll make sure I'll enable

location services for maps and put in your address in atlanta and hopefully you'll receive it. But I an't guarantee and battery doesn't last long if you turn on location services. So, it might not reach bu tyeah keep an eye on it!

I couldn't agree more with you ... I would very happily trade thickness and weight for good battery life. In fact, I wish Apple would offer the iPhone 5 next year in different thicknesses with different battery capacities and let the consumers decide with their wallets what is more important to them. What would be the point of having a shiny cute razor-thin gadget that needs to be recharged constantly? Even charging every other day is far from optimal, considering that in the pre-smartphone days some Nokia phones could easily last a week with normal usage.

If Apple doesn't start taking battery life seriously I'll definitely need to reconsider my future iPhone purchases and look around for alternatives ...
