Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/11/ios-5-update-improvement/

As mentioned the fix seems to work!!

Going through the first link you will find that "Not everyone has noticed changes, however, Gareth Evans tweeted that he saw no difference in his battery life when he upgraded.".

My original question comes back then: could it be that there are both hardware and software issues with iPhone 4S and iOS 5.0 leading to some users seeing dramatic improvements and others not? After changing my original 4S, and with same settings on the new unit still using iOS 5.0, I am now more than 2 1/2 days working on my initial full battery charge and still show 23% available battery.

I upgraded from a jailbroken 3GS like a lot of other people. Was keen to try Android (Samsung Galaxy S2) but went with the new 4S on contract renewal.

This was about 2 weeks ago. 2 days ago the iPhone 4S started getting very hot and discharged completely in 4 hours. the next night it completely discharged, from 100%, overnight whilst in standby. The most worrying thing is the heat. Exploding lithium batteries anyone???

I activated all the tweaks that were mentioned in the ibtimes http://tinyurl.com/d4fmkyl article. However it basically makes your phone unusable, as every time you start an app it wants you to turn your location back on. Viber for example just won't work

However even without that I noticed that just checking the weather started my phone heating up discharging really quickly.

So these are "work arounds" they are not 'fixes.

My 4S battery not only drains like a seive but it gets very hot even after all the "tweaks" have been applied. And I was going to go Android this time!! Regretting sticking with Apple!!

Is this battery bad? Or is it normal? I do hope iOS 5.1 comes out soon!

There will always be people looking at the glass half empty.

There will always be people believing that the product is ******

Bottom line is - let's wait for the fix. I'm quite sure it will solve most of the issues - otherwise Apple wouldn't release a fix

The problem in this discussion is the lemming effect and paranoia.

People don't really know what's good or bad battery is.

My theory is that because people are getting a new phone/toy, they use it intensively for many hours and don't understand why the battery drops that fast.

    Well - it's because you're using it!!

Not said that there isn't a problem, but calm down and don't get paranoid.

I have calibrated the battery with 2 full charges from empty, gone through this thread with a fine toothcomb and turned off all the usual things (auto time zone, notification centre, push email). This morning I have lost 20% battery in 3 hours light usage (30 mins music, 4 or 5 texts and emails). This doesn't seem great to me but as my first iphone I don't really have another device to compare it to.

I charged my phone to 100%,  30 mins after unplugging it received 1 phone call which lasted 10 mins 32 seconds.

I'm showing now 94% battery. But under battery usage in general settings it says: Usage 40 mins. I presume that means 40 mins since it was unplugged. It also says standy 1 hr 2 mins. One hour 2 mins? What on earth is that about?

I have a battery app which says I have 90% battery and 3G talk time of 7 hrs.

Regardless, the phone is draining like a sieve. After 8 hours yesterday with no phone calls and about 10 mins of 3G use, some accessing of emails on Wifi, no surfing, video watching or anything smart-phonish at all, it was down to 20%.

At the moment, this can't be depended on as a phone.

I think it has something to to with battery management. I did not have issues in the beginning, but after streaming music for a while my phone got extremly warm. Since this first time overheating event, my battery drained within 6-8 hours without usage.

I yesterday did a complete restore without restoring my backup. Today my battery is still at 94% after 4 hours with light usage which seems to be a good value.

So, I am confident that a software update can fix the issue and my guess would be that it has to do with battery management after overheating.

Following up previous post on standby, my 4S with no activity I'm still dropping 3-4% per hour. Is this normal given my settings?

I am facing the same issue, where back panel of my iphone 4s warms up very much when ever i run a game OR Music for 10-15 min.

I never faced similar problem with my iPod. But this phone warms up and losses battery life very rapidly than what is expected.

Also the stand by time and all the battery value settings become useless when you do nothing and still we have bettery loss of 2% or more.

Can you return it or make a replacement? I did for mine. I tried every tricks I could and basically had nothing in there after the 2 resets. The phone still gave me excessive heat and battery constantly drained. So I came to the store and they checked and it was a defect. Try to make appointment with Genius Bar and check out if they can help you.

    Good luck!

How did they check? diagnostics? I went there they told me that I don't have a problem with battery (and the Genius was RUDE with me).

How did they identify that you have a problem?
