    To get the new update just connect your phone and open iTunes.

    Ok i have updated to 5.0.1 and battery drain still remains, I had turned off some of the local services as suggested on some of the posts here and got a little better battery life. Upgraded to 5.0.1 and turned those features back on and blamo! battery is sucking down at previous rate so to me there was no fix, here are the steps i took:


    Installed 5.0.1

    Hard reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/erase all content and settings

    Re-started the phone, re- activated, and dialed *228 ( I am on Verizon)

    Left everything factory, just added my company's email account which syncs cal, email.contacts


    did all this while connected to a power source and once i was done and removed it from power had it at 78%

    Just let the phone go to sleep on it's onw on my desk, turned it on after 30 minutes which was hard for me to do since i kept getting the urge to look at it...


    Battery life 64%  and this like i said was just sitting on my desk! then proceeded to use it open email, opened safari, went to appstore and reinstalled an app i had... about 15 20 minutes of navigating, phone very warm and battery now down to 42%, I guess my next step now is to call apple and get a "certified" phone and this is very frustrating since i paid $400+ for a "NEW" device and now will be going to a "CERTIFIED" device which i dont care what anyone says because if it is like new why is not re-shwrinked wraped and put on the shelf? Because it is illegal to sell a product as new once it has been touched one way or another.


    So yeah $400 for a "certified device that will most likely have the same problem as previous "NEW" device. Guess I should have waited for the DROID RAZR!!!!! and stayed with the Droid devices.

    I noticed an issue my 4S, not sure if its been discussed here yet (275 pages). When I use my computer to charge my phone it charges much slower and the battery lasts much longer. When I charge my phone using a power outlet, the phone charges much faster, but also dies much faster. I charged my phone last night while connected to an outlet, I woke up at 4AM and uplugged my phone (was at 100%). I went back to bed and woke up 4 hours later my battery was at 46%. In 4 hours of standby my battery dropped 54%. I have tried all the recommendations including charging to 100% letting it die and charging to 100%, seems like it was getting worse if anything.


    I just upgraded to 5.0.1 and I am now charging the phone through my computer, battery is at 79%. Once at 100% i will disconnect and will monitor to see if there are any improvements.


    For those having issues please state if you are charging your phone through the computer or with a wall charger. Try both methods and state if you experience better battery life either way.

    I have had my iPhone 4s for 10 days.  No issue with the battery.  The update installed today, I have used the phone for 6 hours since the update made several calls a few texts and browsed the interned for 25-30 minutes.  The battery is @89%.  I was happy before the update, and I don't see any difference after the update

    It's device specific.  The update for my iPad 2 is 44.6mb, the update for my iPhone 4S is 55.5mb.  Both are AT&T 3G.

    I have been following this thread since it started but have never posted. I have had all the same issues as everyone else with battery life...I can literally sit watch my phone battery drop percentage points by the minute. I have tried every suggested "fix" available, and upgraded to ios 5.1 today. The battery is worse than ever. I cannot believe it didn't work.  But you make one very good point: when I charge my battery through a power outlet, it charges up at lightning speed, and then drops even faster when I take it off. But if I charge it on a computer, it charges slowly and drops more slowly. I am not a tech expert but this is interesting.


    At any rate, this is so frustrating that I'm about to give up. I just don't know what else to do. I refuse to "turn off" apps and location services and all the other features. I did not buy this phone so that I couldn't use it's features. I will return it before I walk around with a shell of an iPhone that I can't use. There has to be something else going on here.

    Yeah my Iphone 4 did the same thing after installing IOS 5.  Sounds are about half volume now.

    I agree wholeheartedly with Melissa.  I upgraded to the fix 1 hour and 20 minutes ago and have already lost 22% of battery life.  I had problems before, but it is far worse with the "fix".  I had an iPhone 4 and ran many applications with no depreciable decrease in battery life.  I do not want to turn off applications.  I may give it a day or two, but at this point, I will probably return the phone.

    It's awful because I have always been a big Apple fan and I absolutely love this phone. I waited patiently for this official fix (the software upgrade) and didn't complain because I know that in any new product there are going to be bugs and I gave Apple time to work it out.  But the fact that ios 5.1 actually made a bad battery even worse just floors me. The phone is unusable for more than 2-3 hours unless it is on a continual charge. I just can't accept that.

    I am hoping tech support from Apple reads these posts.  I don't know how else to give them feedback.  I want them to know that the problem has gotten worse!  If anyone knows how to give feedback directly, please let me know.

    I really dislike when you guys talk about disabling locations, notifications, etc to save battery because one of the reasons why I decided to go with the iPhone was so that I can use these features. If i disable these just so I can go a full day without worrying about the battery, I might as well go back to a basic phone.

    I think the dual-core A5 chip (iPhone 4s and iPad 2) is not as power efficient as the A4 chip (iPhone 4 and iPad) since the power efficiency of the original iPad is much better (with similar apps and settings) than the iPad 2 as well. Probably not so easy to solve since this phenomenon occurs in both IOS 4 and IOS 5.

    It seems to me many of you are not "methodical" so that's why you have to let the update "sink in" i.e. wait until 1-2 charge cycles to see if there is a difference.


    If I had an Iphone, I would update it, factory reset it, restore to "new", leave all the options "on", reinstall all apps then drain it to shutoff and charge it to 100% then analyze if I see a difference.


    If not I guess either the fix didn't work for you or you have a defective device, so I'd return it for a new one. If they refuse to take it back I'd get refunded and move on.


    But that's just me.
