Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I'm a sofeware developer and been working on iOS for 4 months. We had the same problem with beta 1 and 2 on the iPhone 4. But now the 4/S is out no software developer has work on the 4/S. Apple doesn't want to show the world till it came out. Now found its a management battery problem which you have no idea what I'm talking about. I know what the problem is and have talk to Apple and they agree that the case.

Their going to be a update from Apple. So everybody just wait. It's going to be fix.

@DocAaron: you did not replace only your battery, did you? Maybe your replacement got parts from another batch of chips that interact differntly with software or are defective?

I can now (for my phone) confirm what I reported earlier: I get the battery drain and usage time problem as soon as I enable "mobile data" - the problem even stays when I switch mobile data off later and goes only away when I do a "reset network settings" - now, explain that with a defective battery.

The odd thing is, this battery drain happens after enabling mobile data despite the phone being in the house with perfect WiFi connection at all times, so it should not even need to use the mobile data (not to mention the fact that basically everything that could transmit data is currently disabled).

I would love to hear from others who have the problem and are in an WiFi environment:

If you do a Network Settings Reset (which should leave you with no WiFi and no mobile Data):

    * is you battery drain gone (and the increase in usage time while on Standby)

    * is your problem still gone when you re-enable WiFi

    * is the problem back when you re-enable mobile data

    * is the problem then still persistent if you disable mobile data again, until you do another reset of Network Settings?

I went to sleep with a full green bar and when I woke up (8 hrs) the phone was completely drained! ie. would not turn on / only show a small red bar on the battery. As far as i know it wasn't running anything and was on the home screen when i turned the screen off.

I have iPhone4 and 4S with iOS5.  Overnight the 4S was completely drained ( < 5%) but not the 4 (>90%).. how can that be a software issue if they're both running iOS5?  I'll try it again and make sure all the settings are the same.  If it is a software issue, something about the 4S hardware makes it much worse.

Yes you might have some App running in the back ground running you don't know. Trust me it's software. For now the hardware and software have to be tweak which is not. It's like a car engine in a Grand prix.

So again everybody just wait for the new Apple update.

Please don't send me any email about this just wait for the fix. That's to everybody.

The 4s is my first iphone, as I am a Sprint customer and could never have one before now with Sprint.  I was told that my battery life would be much better with an iphone than with android.  WRONG!  Boy, I have been waiting for 4 years to get an iphone, only to contiplate having to send it back.  I have only had it for a week now, only have another week to decide if I want to keep it or not.  Now I have deleted my email accounts and reinstalled them.  I have also disabled the time zone feature.  I turned off location services on everything that I don't need to have it on.  After charging it all night after letting it go down to 3% charge, I left it sit for 2 hours off of the plug.  It didn't use any battery life in those 2 hours.  I will probably try to run the battery down to 0% today, then give it another full charge.  If this doesn't work, I will probably have no choice but to send it back.  Very disappointed if I have to do so, I love the phone, just not the battery life.

Not true. The iPhone iOS 5 for the 4 is not the same as the 4/S software. They act the same but are tune to the hardware. If you check your download of 4 and 4/S you will see the file is not the same size.

Yes run down the battery that going to help a little but Apple knows about the problem. It's a software problem which the hardware and software have to be tweak. I have all iPhone back 2007 and ever new iPhone had the same problem till they release the new update. Just wait.

A simple search on twitter will comfirm it is a software basedproblem. Many people with different devices not just the 4S aregetting problems. Some more so than other which depends on your settings, what email provider you use, if you have a lot of devices pushing your data toiCloud. etc. People who are getting it so bad that their phones are hot andare losing 10% in 5 minutes, are finding their phones dead when waking up andare actually struggling to get there phone to 100% battery when it's been oncharge overnight should defiantly think about changing settings or getting anew device as I have the new 4S and my problems don’t sound anywhere near asbad as that. But again it depends on settings and will be different for all.

Search on twitter 'iOS battery' and you will see what I mean!

I’m getting about 5% loss in 40mins to an hours, which too me isn’t toobad and sounds about right until they release a patch, unless you’re getting a hotdevice and losing 5% in 5mins etc., be patient!

Thank you to agree with me. Like I said its a software problem. Fix is going to come fast. Like maybe this week or two. The iOS 5 is buggy and has over 8 bugs I found on it. I'm a software developer and have talk to Apple about it.

As we speak Apple is working on the fix with other bugs and update is coming soon. Just wait.

To everybody who is reading this post about battery drain don't put you 2 cent unless you are a software developer.

Ill keep saying it, my phone was great- 2% standby loss the first 2 nights.(At normal factory settings with cloud enabled!). The only strange thing was the phone was at 1% for about 20 minutes of heavy use. Dropped some settings to increase usage drain and things went downhill from there. constant 30% drain overnight. not to mention massive usage drain.

after dropping ALL settings- (location services, cloud, wifi, itunes ping, push notifications, etc.etc.etc) things have not gotten any better. I dont care what idea you can come up with- (diagnoistics, compass calibration, auto time set, stock ticker,iAds ) NOTHING is making it normal again.

I just did a full restore to new phone Ill get back to you guys but at this point I believe there is something wrong in the settings thats bugged.

My system status system log keeps showing "Unable to cancel system wake for 2011-10-21 09:20:12 -0400. IOPMCancelScheduledPowerEvent() returned 0xe00002c" Seems like something is not letting the phone sleep.

So im pretty sure its a software issue

Also there have been instances with my phone becoming warm while its in standby

Same battery issue with my 4S on the Verizon system.  No help from Verizon but when I went in to the Apple Store it was fixed.  They ran a diagnostic with their equipment (the clerks phone) and it showed that I had only used the phone for 1.5 mins. all day. He said that that was impossible and knew that it had been used more.  He said that it told him that the sofware was corrupt and after backing it up, reformated the entire phone.  Everything including the phones software was removed and reloaded.  All total it took about 15 mins.  So far, 2 days later, amazing improvement in battery life  No longer want to return it. The phone would drop to nothing without much usage in 3 hours, now it lasts all day.   This was done at the UTC store in San Diergo, CA.  PS, you should turn off the wifi when you do not need it and are moving around town.

Is this different than doing a factory restore with Itunes ?
