Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    The 5.0.1 update has made no difference, still losing 22% charge overnight (7-8 hours) on the 4S yet my old iphone 4 only loses about 5% on an 18 month old battery that should be nearing the end of its lifespan from daily charges!

    5.0.1 has not seemed to help my iPhone 4s. I had changed settings, seen improvement, and been satisfied prior to the 5.0.1 update. Now, the drainage has seemed to go more quickly.

    Well, the update is slowly "sinking in". Some users who can have improvements will end up triggering the conditions to make it work, whereas for the remaining users who still have trouble, this will soon become indicative of faulty hardware (or whatever) and they should have their phones replaced or refunded.

    "People experiencing battery issues shouldn't be alarmed!" - They will sleep soundly. Hope you get it, it's a real good one!

    Briefly commenting on this guy's post from Dubai a bit earlier on, I thought of another one: "What do you tell a guy in Dubai if 5.0.1 doesn't work for him? - Well, you're lucky you can still go back to Palm" lollll. haha.

    Finally, as this will be settling down (?), I think the time has come for the awaited "video apology" from Apple's top brass to the "small number of users" who have hit the thread 306 157 times. And let's have it in HD with Apple's lossless recently open sourced AAC audio (cheers for that!) - because we want to see the tear in the eye and hear the tremolo in the voice. Apple could ask Wired.com to put it on their home page. I for one would perceive it as a sign of humility and respect for the (small) user base who has been suffering and all. I mean if RIM did it, Apple can do it better... with Imovie. Of course I make jokes about this but seriously it takes guts to do that and I would respect it a lot, it would go a long way into showing that changes are possible at Apple. I mean think different. So if not for the user base then for me?

    Thank you!

    I'm sorry but some people are not very astute. Apple comes out with some problematic phones and you have one that works ok, 6-8hrs of use with minimal drain during standby... and you go and apply 5.0.1 without seeing what it does first in the forums??? Worst, you have a terrible phone... you apply 5.0.1 and in your case it makes it worst and the best you can do is... pray for 5.0.2. or pay for an extra battery-casing. I don't get you.

    The lesson is this:

    -NEVER preorder phones or buy a phone before it's been out 2 months in the open and you come to the forums to read about it... don't go read Wired. Real forums with real people.

    -NEVER apply a fix that you can't remove afterwards. In that case too you should come to the forum and read about it

    -NEVER make fun of BB or Android or WinMo again because that brings bad karma

    Good luck nevertheless!

    updated iPhone 4 to 5.0.1 three hours ago, made 2 calls, checked and opened emails, went on Facebook, checked stock market and associated press sights, and fantasy football league. When I downloaded the uupdate my iPhone was at 97% battery life, and after all this, it's still at 97%. Works great for me. No complaints so far.

    Not trying to rub salt into the wound but My 4s has now been off charge for 10.5 hours now with about an hours Internet usage, 3.5 hours music and 0.5 hours gaming. Battery life is at 59%. That's about 11% better than before. Not perfect but considering all i have turned off is auto updating time zone and Bluetooth not bad. Think I could go 2 days easily without charging now.

    I did do a system reset after the update though. So this may have helped.

    Hope this helps someone

    Hello,

    First sorry for my bad english .

    I've got a 3gs and Ios5.0 and i have seen that the batterie life was worse with Ios 5 than Ios4.xx

    Here is some tips to make longer life.

    I've got always wifi & 3G on, but all these settings are Off :

    • Store => off, why having on, you're not always buying something
    • Ping => off
    • Mail => Push Off
    • bluetooth => off
    • Brithness => middle abd automatique
    • Wifi Itunes Sync => off
    • Multitask => 2 clicks on the Home Button, after press the 1st Icon for 5 scds, a cross will appear on the top right of all the icons, kill them all, often in th dairy.
    • Localisation Service  => on
    • System services => Only diag & search network are on

    Also, each time you upade your Ios, you will be do the 3 first point, cause the update erase them.

    With the Ios 5.0 and a surf for about 1.5 hour a day, texts and about 30 min phone, i have 2 days batterie life.

    I don't if i can insert a tuto for Iphone Here.

    Here is my capture, made now, look how many % i've got after 20hours run .

    I upgraded my 4s  to 5.01 to fix the battery issue. I did notice that in standby over night it only drained 1%. It usually drains about 3%. So this seems to be better. However, the battery is draining faster now than before the upgrade. I would say that I'm probably loosing 15% every 20 minutes of mild use. A few text messages, checking my email and checking the news. After about an hour and half I have start charging the phone. Actually today I had to charge it twice. My IPad is not having these issues. This is really bad. I am a first time IPhone user. I went out and bought three of them and I'm have the same issues on every phone. I'm really upset about this. I'm wondering if Sprint would let me change phones.

    Agreed. I'm also meticulous of closing all running apps.

    Updated to 5.0.1 with iPhone 4. Lost 6% overnight.

    If you're phone was doing  nothing and just in stand-by; no email checking, no incoming texts, no "behinds the scenes" location services, then I would have expected a 4% drop over an 8 hour period. (Half a percent each hour would put you at 200 hours standby time, which is the advertised standby time)

    But your follow-up post about losing 4% is 1 hour 13 mins while in standby is a pretty dramatic drop.

    So ios 5.0.1 has actually made my battery worse. Dropped 5% in 9 minutes oh with no use. *** Apple, 4s is my first iPhone and I regret getting it. I've already had my original 4s replaced due to the battery and this doesn't seem to be any better. I'll gladly have my old broken blackberry back!

    Eu também estou enfrentando problemas com a bateria, antes de atualizar eu não tinha problemas, agora que atualizei meu IPhone 4S estou tendo problemas, a bateria esta acabando muito rápido, eu praticamente tenho que recarregar o aparellho 2 vezes ao longo do dia.

    Thank you for your suggestions. Just noticed that rebooting the phone actually drains 2% of fully charged battery. Do this test:

    • Fully charge your phone
    • Turn off the phone
    • Turn on the phone
    • Observe the battery indicator.

    Will take the phone back to BestBuy tomorrow. Wonder if they wave restocking fee on this phone, perhaps will give me a new phone to try for a month.

    So far my battery life seems to be good.

    1) Siri off

    2) Wifi on

    3) 3G on

    4) location services on for maps/weather/find my phone.

    5) mail: push off / manual fetch

    Check emails, watch a movie for 5min to test an app, surf the net ( all through wifi)

    Battery is at 95%

    Usage: 36 Minutes

    Standby:  3 Hours, 35 minutes

    All I did was update the phone through iTunes, charged the phone then did a hard reset.

    I try to keep my progress up to date as I test some more later on.

    My experience with the 5.0.1 update was at first positive - the first few days I had it, as I reported on here, my battery life seemed to be considerably better than it was. However, after having it for some time now, it seems that I'm right back to where I was. I can't account for the shift, but I was doing great at first after the update and now I'm back to huge battery loss, perhaps even worse than it was.

    UPDATE: This just in from Apple:

    “The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices. We continue to investigate a few remaining issues.”
