Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Exactly...this chart tells us nothing at best and misleading at worst.

honestly I am seeing improvement also and I have a VZW 4.

My only issue is I work in a poor coverage area, so I can't REALLY test the update until a day off.

The only improvement I noticed is that previously, over 7 hours standby overnight I went from 100% to 93%.  Now I go from 100% to 98%.  BUT ... then the battery charge drops at a quicker rate than previous when using the phone and so the overall net position is the same i.e. I have to charge this 4s every single day!

I hope there's going to be a better solution soon ...

I don't use Facebook or Twitter, and mine had battery issues.

    Update:

Six hours. At 98%, received/sent 2 texts and have been getting emails all day.

    Everything set to, "On."

    Hello All,

Like others on this forum, I too have battery issue with my new iPhone 4S. I even exchanged with a new phone over the weekend but I am still seeing same issues. I am not seeing an difference even with ios5.0.1.  Here are my observations

    1) Some days even when the Phone is Charged all night, when I check the phone in the morning, the Battery level doesn't show 100%. Some times it is 94%, some times it is 98%.  But when I unplug it and plug it back it will go back to 100% after few minutes of charging.

    2) when the phone is in standby mode (in my holster), the battery drain is significantly less.

    3) When I am using the phone (doing simple tasks), I see the battery drain at faster rate as evey one here describing.

I am sure some fix will be there soon to fix the battery issue, but I am more concerned on why the battery level is not 100 % even after all night charge.

A few thoughts for those with "heavy" drain.

    1. Will the 5.0.1 upgrade cause everything to be re-synched if you are using the cloud? This might be a reason for the initial battery life drain which some are seeing. Hundreds of contacts, hundreds of emails, lots of documents, etc. may take some time and will definitely drain the battery a lot. Wi-Fi sync will drain slightly less, 3G sync will drain more. Maybe some of you need to relax a bit and see if the issue is still there after a few days and maybe a few full battery charges. I have not reviewed how fast it will sync but if you are synching 1-2 GB on 3G, it could take up to a few hours and will definitely suck a lot of battery.

    2. Might still be a few Cloud sync bugs remaining. I have had my 4s since day 1 and over the first few days, the battery was discharging very quickly and one time the phone did get rather warm. I was using the cloud for some things but not everything. I later limited cloud services completely (except FindMyPhone) and the battery has been quite decent since.

    3. Cloud sync is a nice feature but for those who are happy synching when you drop it in the cradle connected to your Mac or PC, than I would suggest turning the cloud service off or maybe limiting to "find my phone" which is a cool feature to have available but I am perfectly happy with cradle sync.

    4. Cloud sync is great if you must have updated stuff every single minute of every day. If not, you are wasting battery life and not gaining anything.

    5. I think Apple is having issues with the accuracy of the battery meter, which is likely a software issue and not a hardware issue. Much like the issue they had on the iPhone 4 when the signal strength meter was over-estimating the number of bars. Many 4s owners have said they have a lot of actual time remaining when the battery meter indicates 10%; much more than using a standard logarithmic measurement of % drain per hour.

    6. Limit your battery use by customizing some of the features. I noticed significant improvement when I shut off “Siri pick up to talk” and a few of the other settings (particularly time zone adjust if you are not traveling all the time) which have been discussed in great detail.  But definitely review your apps and their use of Location Services.  Push email, multiple email accounts all using push, etc. will drain a battery rather quickly.  Be intelligent on the features you really need and the battery life will be very acceptable and maybe get better as Apple finds any remaining bugs.

    7. It is possible some of the 4s models may not have had the battery optimized well before they left the factory.  Doing some full charges after the phone is allowed to fully run out of battery have proven to improve the battery life significantly.  It got better with each full charge for me over the first week. The 99 cent Battery Doctor app might be useful for a while till Apple finds remaining bugs. I installed it a week ago and it seems to have helped.

    8. Apple has published battery drain estimates for all forms of use before the phone was out. In reading many of these posts over two weeks, it appears some people do not yet have a grasp on this info.  Many people seem confused about the numbers.  You will not get 200 hours of standby and use the phone for 8 hours on email, talking, surfing, playing music, etc.  Everyone uses the phone differently and there are a million variables.

Folks – please relax a bit.  Apple will do the right thing. Give them a little time and be patient.

If you're curious try the following:

replace your SIM card with a rechargeable card that does not allow to use of 3G but

    only Voice talk.

Then you will see that the battery drain  no longer exist !!

Even with cellular data set to ON now 3G is really OFF and statistics show that

used data time is now very low compared from standby time.

You can let your phone for several hours doing nothing and see that data used

remains very low and %percent of charge move down also very Slowly.

You can set WIFI on and make internet surfing, mails music and so on...

Still with a very normal power consumption.

Of course this was just for a test and conclusion is:

Apple must find why 3G is consuming too much power in 5.0.2 comming SOON!

Attention is not just the iPhone 4s that this problem, in Ipod Touch 4G also, every 2 minutes is 5% of the battery, with light baixa

Usage is pretty similar each day. Not an excessive talker and I'm usually on WiFi.

I am not. turning. off. iCloud. That is why we have this phone! It is NOT the solution. This infuriates me when people say this! I'm sorry, Kathrine, it's nothing personal, but you shouldn't have to disable the features that made you buy the phone in the first place!

To all you folks posting here with snazzy messages like "Apple help me!!!!" and "PLEASE FIX IT!!!" and the like, I just want to say this: think about itDo you honestly expect that posting something like "APPLE HELP ME!!!" to a random forum like this is going to do anything to resolve your situation?  No, it isn't - no matter how many exclamation points you lay in for emphasis.

If you have a problem with your device, either go to an Apple store and talk to a genius, or call Apple customer support.

Second of all, if you don't actually own a device, stop posting in here like you do.  I've seen some of THE most ridiculous claims made in here, never with any evidence.  Some people have claimed their device discharges completely after only 34 - 100 minutes of use.  I personally don't believe that even for a second - it strains credulity.  But if it happens to be true, then the above applies doubly: get the hence to an Apple store and return it, because its broken.  If your phone won't last more than a few hours on a full charge (few means "two", people, not "eight"), it's got a bad battery, period.

I don't have any problems with my phone.  I have everything on except bluetooth and push mail, and my power use is in-line with Apple's specifications.

I just upgraded to 4s from 3gs 5 days ago. Never had battery issues with 3gs. Always was very good battery-wise, and could go days without a recharge. Same with my new 4s. Battery works great, with maybe a 3% discharge overnight. And with new 4s, my reception from AT&T has been greatly improved at my home. Double antenna seems to work great, also. I did install I0s 5.1 yesterday OTA, and saw no change....phone works as good as ever.

My thoughts on reported problems: Not a physical battery issue, because there would be no improvement with a software update, as some have seen. Manufacturers do a "quick charge" before shipping, and just like with a car battery, is not a good complete charge. Very important that you do a few COMPLETE charge-discharge cycles to eliminate that possibility, and get your battery up to full capacity ability.

Make sure you do a full restore NOT using from a back up, as you might be just reloading the same problem. We all have the same software that came with phones pre-loaded, and some of us have issues, and some do not. So what is different among our phones??? Additional programs, in the form of apps. My thinking is there is a single, or group of apps,  that are not compatible with IOS 5, and are reeking havoc with new OS. Probably a non-mainstream app/apps that may be common among those having problems, and running undetected in the background. Would be interesting to see if true. Also, with rapid batt. drain, is phone warm, or hot? That would be very telling.

Other than that, common sense actions like disabling WiFi and "Locations (GPS}" when not using (huge data hogs) will prolong anyones batt. life. Also, do you really need to back up to icloud every time you take a pic? Just set to "manual", and back up everything at once (including entire camera roll) to icloud when you plug in to charge. And do you need every email to be backed up instantly to icloud. It's already backed up instantly to my Mac. Every ping to a cell tower eats away at your battery.

If nothing above helps, then it is truly is a software issue. I can imagine it's very frustrating for those affected, but with 60,000 Apple employees, most of whom are engineers, I'm sure that Apple will sort this out soon, and no one there is getting a holiday off today. So before you throw your 4s out the top floor window, and run out to buy another brand, know that at least one user (me) is very impressed with my 4s, and couldn't be happier with it. It really is a remarkable piece of work. And no.....I'm not affiliated with Apple in any way. Just don't throw the baby out with the bath water, and give Apple a few days to sort this mess out.
