Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Just called up Apple support to ask if there is any hope for this battery drain issue. The first engineer was not able to give any conclusive answer but acknowledged my concerns. Then he transfered me to his "manager" who said he hasnt heard any battery life issues with iPhones so far.. Really Apple? He went on the defensive that loosing 15% charge in 5Hrs in standby is normal, that the advertised 200Hrs standby is only an approximate and it varies rapidly in real usage. At that point I couldnt help but hang up. This is not the kind of support I expected. Atleast acknowledge the issue and give some confidence that you are working on the issue.

Boostnama might have a very good point. I used my Ipad charger with my first 4s which litterealy died on me. The battery got so warm and died in less than 3 Hrs. I had a feeling it was the Ipad charger. The replacement phone have been charging only with Iphone charger and my Mac book.

i updated my 4s to the OS update last night after a full battery drain+recharge and unplugged my phone this morning around 9AM. After some moderate usage, my battery was drained to nearly 39% by 5PM. The same usage with my previous iPhone 4 still felt robust enough to go into the next day without having to recharge

Even after the full charge, i could see the percentage drop a percent or two each time i reached for my phone to do something

This is just borderline ridiculous. Someone mentioned placebo effect; it would've been nice if we could've convinced ourselves that it's been fixed and all is well. Quite the opposite, in fact; it feels worse than before

I see the problem with the battery now people are always looking at the percentage bar.

One person says 1% of loss every 5min is too much and that his battery issue remains.lol

But that number would give him around 9 hours of use which is per spec.

I posted earlier about noticing much better battery life when using my computer to charge the phone, i decided to try to figure out why this was. I also notice i started having battery issues after i charged my phone using my ipad power adapter. When using this adapter and then my iphone adapter the battery on my 4s would charge very fast, but the battery would also die very fast. Charging through the computer charges the battery slower and it lasts much longer.

Here are the power adapter specs:

    iPad output = 5.1v 2.1A

    iPhone 4S output = 5v 1A

    Computer USB output = 0.5A (500mA)

I also have a car charger, not sure of the output of that yet.

My thinking is this, is it possible at one point (or currently) we used a charger that was putting out a output higher than what was rated/designed for the phone and this caused damage to the battery (temporary or permenant). I think its important that we note what power adapter we use/have used with charging the phone.

In my case using the ipad adapter with 2.1v output may have damaged my battery since the 4s adapter has an output of only 1v. By using my computer with 0.5v output has greatly improved my battery life, i haven't gone back to the 4s outlet adapter yet.

I highly encourage everyone to drain there battery down to 0% and then charge to 100% through the computer, a few times, and see if his improves your battery life.

Also if you are xperiencing battery issues please note how you are charging your phone, with what adapter(s).

    Thank You,

    Boostnma

Charger output is rated Peek amperage output. This is NOT , I repeat NOT what amperage the the phone is receiving.

That is set inernelly in the units (iPhone ,Ipad, Ipods) charging circuit.  Being that all can be charged from any USB port (limited 500ma current capacity) the max current would be set to this limit.

The iPhone 4s LIPO is a 1S 1432mah. This can be charged at a 1C rating which would be @ 1.4 amp rating, that is if you could charge it directly.

So using the Ipad USB charger would make any diff. or hurt the iphone or any ipod.

About the charger.  I've been using the one that came with my phone, the one from my ipod touch, and a random one from work (older one with push buttons on the side) and my performance has been the same.  I do wonder if USB vs wall charging times may effect the battery a little, but am certain not enough to warrant these issues.

    Thank You,

Charger current is rated as Peak amp output. This is not what the phone would draw.

Being that you can charge ANY iPhone,Ipod, or Ipad through any USB port (limited current draw :USB2.0 500ma) the current limiting is set in the device circuit. So any usb powered port wether it be Wall type or computer would not over current charge the phone.

Now that the iPhone 4S Lipo is a 1S 1432mah, it can be charged at a 1C rating, which would be at a 1.4 amp rating. That is IF you could charge the lipo directly.

I use the same charger all the time yet similar problem in iPhone 4. I have upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 yet problem persists. This behaviour is intermittent though...suspect it to be telco related.

5.0.1 is the definitely the worst update ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After updating to 5.0.1, my iphone 4 battery drain even faster than IOS 5!!

In IOS 5, I can watch youtube for almost half an hour with 100% battery, but after the update,

I just refreshed my twiter twice, the battery droped 2% winth 5 mins!!!!!!

what are you doing???? Apple please let me go back to ISO 5.0 ? please!!!

the battery drains so fast now, I need to chrage my iphone 4 twice a day even I close many location and notification sevices, it is terrible!!!

I do not mean you must resolve this right now, but at least let us go back to IOS 5, OK???

My new iPhone 4S iOS 5.0.1 had about 97% battery, I talked for 60 minutes and batter was at 75% when I ended the call.

And I'd like to have my album covert art on ALL of my songs like my iTunes shows, not just the few that I have on my iPhone.

Upgrade has improved my battery life—somewhat.

After 15 hours I'm "only" down to 30% with pretty regular email checking, stocks, sms mostly over wi-fi. This is a big improvement since the update—I think.

Unfortunately my daily usage is hard to monitor. What I didn't do today is talk a lot. Therefore I am not really able to make a scientific comparison.

I think we need to CHALLENGE Apple on it's specs if we're going to get anywhere.

Try talking for several hours straight and see how low the battery drops. Try gaming for hours, etc and compare it to what Apple claims we should get.

I'm sorry, if Apple claims 8 hours of talk time, then it should get close to that!

And there is NO FREAKING WAY my iPhone 4s will have enough power for 8 hours of talking!

(has anybody actually read my posts? Or am I just playing with myself?)

I have an iPhone 4S and didn't have any terrible battery issues like some of the people here.  I previously had an iPhone 4 (still in use by a family member), and it wasn't getting as good battery life as I had been with that phone on iOS 4.  I updated to iOS 5.0.1 and had good battery life today.

Enter a change with iTunes this evening.  I decided to turn on the ability to do WiFi syncing with my iMac.  I end up leaving my phone charging on my computer and it goes up to 100%.  I unplug it and check an email, and 10 minutes later I'm down to 97%.  Crazy.  So, I'm going to turn off WiFi syncing (and of course it doesn't sync unless it is plugged in, so that change makes absolutely no sense, but that is the only change I have made to any settings on the phone today.  Like I said, it worked all day like a champ on iOS 5.0.1, but then doing that one setting and successfully performing a sync, charging up to 100%, then ten minutes later down to 97%.  Now down to 96% and I'm just now finishing this email.  That is nuts.

So with iO5, my battery drain had begun to stabilize; now, after upgrading to iO5.1, things are a bit wonky.  My usage stats won't update and the battery is draining quicker than normal with minimal/standby usage.  ::sigh::

I have an iPhone 4S and first used the 5.0.1 betas, and now the release 5.0.1.  Battery life is not better at all.  I would almost say it is worse.  I first upgraded, then I restored and then I restored and set up as a new phone.  Battery life was still horrible.  Looking at my phone now, my usage is 1 hour, 23 minutes and my standby is 1 hour, 45 minutes.  My battery is at 74%.  That is BRUTAL!  I even tried restoring and setting up as new and not installing any apps.  Just set up my email and daily things and the battery still drains super fast.  This is horrible Apple.
