Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I have said this before and I will say it again. Apple did not advertise this phone as "use of features depend on your ability to withstand massive battery drain within a matter of minutes". Turning off Siri and locations services is not the answer.

I am trying to temper my frustration and regain my faith in Apple, based on their history. I have to believe they are going to fix this, no matter how upset I am right now. And believe me, I'm pretty upset.

For those having battery issues during usage, have you checked your CPU usage? I was losing 30%/hour. I downloaded the free iAssistant app, and it showed a steady 50-60% CPU usage.

I turned the phone off and back on and now I'm only using 2-4% CPU.

    Something is eating CPU cycles.

Finally a post that interests me.

I made almost the same tests than you did and my conclusions

are very similar to yours. I also compared my IP4 and my IP4S

and it's seems evident that the problem is linked with 3G use

on my IP4S only, and usage time is growing up  while doing nothing.

i have 2 SIM cards. first one is my normal use  allowing 3G internet

access and 3 hours voice and a second one (rechargeable) working only

for voice calls but not 3G.

if i use this card in my IP4S instead of the "normal one", then

changing nothing in  settings and having both wifi and cellular data enabled,

my phone works as i like. No more problem with crazy usage time

growing up with no activity. I can wifi surf, fetching mails etc.. with

remaining battery % going down slowly ONLY when phone is used.

I found this as the only way to really disable 3G while working in  WIFI.

Putting back my normal SIM and problem reappears immediatly.

I also sent a report to Apple this morning.

    This may help:

    • I kept my ip3gs through the 4 release running ios4.x.

Because I knew there'd be a new phone entering and they didn't have white. My battery performance ROCKED. I could talk to my GF for 8 hours a day as she's out of town for 6 months and I don't see her, then the same the next day and NOT have to recharge until the end of the second day. I'd still have a good 10%- 20% by that charge time after all of that talking, checking business emails, etc…

I had WiFi on all day.

BlueTooth on maybe 10% of the day.

Location services for about 20 apps on constantly.

Time Zone on all the time.

Texts in and out maybe 15-20 an hour.

5 business email accounts attached to my phone

    3 personal email accounts

Put it this way, my 3GS got HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY use, I BEAT IT'S AZZ, that's for SURE.

    • 2 weeks after ios5 release, I decided to cave in an put it on my 3gs.

    BAD MOVE.

I started to notice battery drain unlike I've seen before. Definitely not as bad as you guys are pointing out here, but none-the-less, BAD. I'd now have to charge at the end of the day if not by 3/4 of the day gone by, with the exact same or even some LESS usage.

I had changed ZERO settings what-so-ever, the only change was the ios from 4.x to 5.x, and it hadn't changed to better with the first update to ios5.x

    • I just, yesterday, got my new ip4gs in the mail.

I now have the same BullXhit battery life problems that you all do. I started with a fresh phone, restored from backup from my 3gs and let it be.

I did not allow any auto data calls from the phone to apple, none of that BS, PING was off too. The only thing I did have on was some of the location services for apps that I use. No SIRI, no Find My iPhone, NOTHING.

I had talked an hour to my girl: Battery dropped from 100% to 83%.

Phone sat for 30 min as I watched a movie: Battery dropped from 83% to 80%.

Slept from 11pm to 6:15am: Battery dropped from 80% to 61%

Changing settings as prescribed here for 20 min: Battery dropped from 61% to 52%

BOTTOM LINE: I was running the 3gs with ios4.x and it was AMAZING. Once I updated 3gs to ios5.x… UGH! And the SAME result with the new iPhone 4gs.

I think there's something running in the BKGD that we can not see. Not sure whether it's something Apple just didn't catch or if it's something we're maybe not supposed to know about, like some GPS thing the government secretly mandated we have, considering they're passing legislation for it openly right now, who knows what they've mandated behind the curtain.

Regardless, I'm the perfect case scenario for performance change here, I'm not the idiot who has to run out and wait in line for the new one right away, I take my time and let the dust settle, so I was running an almost 3yr old phone with ios4.x. The second I updated ios on 3gs phone, BAM, problems began.

Do with that, what you will.

I think I'm about to scrub the 5.0 B.S. and go into my Time Machine backups and find a backup from pre-5.*.

Reset the phone, restore from whatever was the last 4.* release I had and wait it out.

    This is fecking ridiculous!

Same story for me. I recently bought 4s, restored it from my old iPhone 3g and problems started. Battery lasts for about 1 day, no more than 24h. I have everything switched off except the wifi (which is sometimes constantly connected) and mobile data (3g). This is really a huge shame for Apple and iPhone. I can understand bugs but to sell a product and not test OS so it comes out to public like this is just insane. Looks like Apple managers were in real need to deliver something before it was ready to be delivered.

I feel so let down from apple!

i am a fanatic mac user and have been waiting for the latest iphone for over a year!

i was following all the news and speculations about its release and funny thing i even

left my position during the launch to go on line and see the new gadget!

At fisrt,so disapointed with the idea of keeping the same look.

After a few days of concidering i decided that these guys must know something more than us

and bring in the market to compete with all the Android real, multi tasking portable computer phones

something that gives you the impretion of keeping the same phone that the internal is totally revambed.

I relied on them and placed my order to make sure that i will be one of the first to hold in their hands

one of the first.I thought it was a sign that it was released on my birthday!

So, the idea of upgrading to a samsung was past!

Long story short,i was taken from a big surpise for the wrong reason!

    The phone is just good!

Siri doesnt always understand me'i know i have a bit of an accent but i m very proud of my English!

Count 1 more on the long list of dispointed with the battery life!

Whats the point if you have a phone capable of so many functions and cant really use it!

Not to forget the camera! Is there anyone out there that can raise his voice and say,Yes!

this is the best camera on a smart phone!

As a blackberry user i can mention so many lacks on the iphone comparing to any bb but i understand, different companies, different prespective of users experience!

    The bottom line is...

the ludicrus battery life on iphone 4s offers frustration and just that on the user!

If there is a software issue, should be fixed!Maybe with an ios5.0.2 because ios5.0.1 did nothing!

If the case is a hardware issue, replace it!

Show to your customers that you really care!Show that Apple is so great for their users experience and customer service!Dont think of the cost!Potentially that will cost you a lot more!

Always remember that a company is makes profit from theis sales!if consumers are not happy, they dont buy again!

    Apple sould act imidiately!

I love Apple and what portraits!i dont like Google,i cant stand microsoft and blackberry will always be my second device!

But at the end of the day we are consumers and we pay our money! And Apple is famous for the high prices!

We want to support the company and make it even greater!

    Please give us a reason!

    Looking forward to a solution!

Such a disapointment Apple. I bought the iphone 4s with my hard earn money only to have to put up with this battery crap.

Apple said that they're fixed the battery bug in 5.0.1. To my dismay after installing the update, my battery life is now worsen.

I've mention this issue to all my friends and families.

The iphone people say that we have lauch the beta version to fix the bugs that affetc the battery life the just makes the people fool and their new version is also fake because it doesnt help me anything. When i completely charge my phone at night 10:00 pm it shows 100% and when i wake up the another morning it shows 82% so hows that possible, i cant able to deal with it. It seems that by just putting the phone in standby mode looses 18%........

I totally agree. I noticed some minor drain under OS 5, but after downloading 5.0.1 I'm getting much better battery life on my 4. Everything works good and I'm totally satisfied. I have push notifications on, Facebook, Associated Press alerts, emails alerts and I use wifi about 95% of the time. 5.0.1 fixed any small problems I had. Has to be a software issue. I'm on AT&T as well.

Yep, just rebooted mine and it reports 70% CPU-usage without anything special turned on. This problem with the 4s is absolutley because of some processes running rampage on the phone.

Should be an easy fix, as soon as apple locate it.

Pretty weak they didn't catch stuff like this in the QA pipeline. Perhaps it needs a overhaul if major bugs like this gets let through.

If anyone else want to watch their brand new iPhone 4s burn batteries to no end, just search for system monitor or something that shows CPU usage in appstore and weep.

At least there is good hope this is fixable with an upgrade, take some comfort in that while you have a nice corded phone.
