Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I've noticed something odd after upgrading my 4s to iOS 5.0.1, which is this:

the battery never reaches 100% charge, even after depleting to less than 20% and then charging overnight, the percentage is only 92%. The other day it was 93%. It's strange that it never reached 100%, like it did prior to the upgrade to iOS 5.0.1.  I'm starting to think that if I "loose" 1% at each attempt to fully charge, it about 4 months, the battery will not hold any more charge. Am I wrong to think that way? This has never happened to my iPhone 4, or the 3Gs for that matter.

    Any one else experience this?

I have also observed this.  Additionally, with the new update I now periodically see the 'location services' (GPS) icon in the menubar for no apparent reason.  My theory is that background GPS and telecom are running amuck, as my phone is somtimes warm even with no use. There is some supporting (albeit anecdotal) evidence posted in this forum.

Yeah this is really annoying. First time iPhone user and I'm just paranoid as **** that my device may be defective.

Among other things (keyboard lag, touch screen not as responsive as friend's devices) my White iPhone 4 (not 4s) bought last Tuesday has terrible battery life.

Currently I'm at 40% with 3 hours 18 minutes usage and only 7 hours 30 minutes standby.

And it's still dropping as we speak. I thought it was a problem with just the 4s, but my 4 is affected too. Many friends with 4's and 4s's aren't having issues on iOS 5.01 like I am so I'm thinking maybe its a defective batch of phones? Who knows.

Whatever the problem, the issue is software.  My 4S didn't have an issue with battery life until I updated (like a *******).

    Try the following

So far seems a little better. I am watching amovie over xfinity on it right now and have dropped 4% in half a hour. Will drain it completly and then charge up to see if it works better...

Why is it all the consumers end up doing the solutions for the programers mistakes ?

Do a Hardreset of you iPhone. Hold down Home and the Powerbutton. Ingnore the Slide to Turn-Off.

    @CDFreet

This was a problem for me before the patch as well. I just don't understand why my phone wasn't left on iOS 4 :/ It came iOS 5 straight from Apple (I got it fresh out of a sealed package from AT&T). I'd rather have good battery life than a notification centre and iCloud.

Since updating to 5.0.1, when left on charge overnight (8 hours) the phone only reaches 93 or 95%.  If I leave it on charge even longer it eventually makes it to 100%.  If I take the phone off charge after it shows 100%, when I am at HOME the phone loses 10%/hr in standby mode with no active use by me.

I noticed in iTunes my phone shows up, as I have it set to sync via wifi.  This made me think that maybe the phone was doing something with iTunes over wifi when in standby.

DISABLING WIFI on the iPhone when i am AT HOME eliminates my battery problem.  FOr the past few hours the phone has lost maybe 1%/hr. All i did was turn wifi off.  I am now going to see what happens if I turn WIFI back on and disable wifi syncing with iTunes.

I noticed that my battery life was horrible at home but when I was out last night it seemed fine.  Not sure if anyone else is having similar experiences but it is WEIRD....

Just an update. Since my last post about 10 minutes ago, my phone has dropped 2% and its on standby. A text or two came in, but I didn't respond to them. 2% loss from that? THis is ridiculous.

I have upgraded to ios 5.0.1 and it hasnt fixed the battery drain problem...actually it has gotten worse. Not at all happy with Apple's response!

Do a hard reset and turn off any un-used services such as Blue Tooth and Wifi after doing an update to iOS5.0.1. When reporting the issue include computer OS please.

You must have your device at version 5.0.1 without any device alterations. Once you do perform a hard reset and you should not have any issues.

Again, we have 10 4s and a host of other iOS devices, we have had no problems. Batter in 4s last two days, but we due data mainly. Providers are AT&T and Sprint. Sprint seems to perform better based on our sampling but that may be due to our location.

    Do a hard reset. http://mcaf.ee/h924g

Do a hard reset after update. Make sure that you keep holding both buttons until reset.

I am very frustrated with IOS5 and IOS5.0.1...both are draining my battery outrageously and it seems the update has made it worse. When I first got the iPhone4, my battery would last at least a day or two with use and a day or two more without use (sleep/stand-by). Now...I got to work at 3pm, fully charged, put the phone into my bag (sleep/standby) and it was down to 38% by 5:30pm. By 8pm it was completely dead and I hadn't sent any texts, made any calls or surfed the web.

As an experiment, I turned off the location services...that seems to fix the problem mostly...but, is that how I have to operate now? I also deleted my Facebook application because that's where most of my notifications come from. I also deleted Twitter. I feel like I'm having to "rewire" my whole "phone" life now to accomodate the problems with the battery life. Very frustrated.

I was tempted to think that the battery problem with IOS5 was how Apple intends to "nudge" us iPhone4 users into upgraded to the iPhone4S...but, I'm hearing that the battery problems are the same or similar with the iPhone4S users. I will NOT upgrade to the 4S until I am assured the battery-life problems are fixed. I've never been this frustrated with Apple before...as I am now. I hope it gets fixed soon.

I suggest wiping the phone and setting it up as a new phone. This is what I did and I have no issues. Also let your battery drain COMPLETELY. Let your phone shut off and then charge it until you see the plug on the battery icon. Leave it for another hour and then use it. If you still have issues after doing this then your battery has to be defective. It is possible that there is a bug when setting the phone up from a backup.

I'm doing an experiment. I just did a hard reboot as suggested here. I have also turned back on location services and am going to operate as I did before the upgrade. My battery right now is at 97% and it's 5:53pm eastern standard time. I am operating IOS5.0.1.

I will check back in and post the exact time and where my battery percentage is. It will be in sleep/stand-by mode.

If anyone has any other suggestions in the meantime, I would be happy to hear them.
