Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    @CDFreet

This was a problem for me before the patch as well. I just don't understand why my phone wasn't left on iOS 4 :/ It came iOS 5 straight from Apple (I got it fresh out of a sealed package from AT&T). I'd rather have good battery life than a notification centre and iCloud.

... Not me. I paid effectively $650 (through wireless contract) for this device and I want to use it the way Apple supposedly designed it. It is self-defeating for the device to drain as it now does under what is essentially idle use.  If I wanted to use a device outside of the environment that Apple is cultivating, I would buy an Android device.

Others may have the idea that I have, which is to use the 5.0 IPSW file to downgrade. This is not possible now that Apple is no longer signing the cert for 5.0. I attempted, to no avail.

Yes, I did that first. Afterwards I restored my backup that probably included som funky settings, so I went to settings -> general - > reset -> reset all settings after that (which retains all your stuff anyway, it just resets all the "normal" settings but nothing gets wiped.

I just had to change all the "ordinary" settings after that and it all just works as intented now. Was very worried the 4s might've been flawed in some way but when cpu usage was around 60-80% constantly it was pretty clear it was a softwarebug and is what caused the phone to drain up so fast.

good luck. if it doesnt work, the next software update should, at least. hopefully.. probably not, then we have to do this **** all over again to get it working properly

I did a clean install and updated to 5.0.1 battery life was about 22 hours with minimal useage, I went though my settings and noticed bluetooth was on and I have never used it or turned it on! There was no bluetooth icon on the display though, I have now turned this off and will do a full charge drain recycle, but bluetooth could explain my phones useage, may be worth checking your phones as I said, I had no bluetooh icon showing.

We have them as well, nice phones but we have been moving all our users to ios, this is the last batch. Androids like all devices have their own issues. (Remember when we moved all our RIM to Androids, that was fun.

I guess I been around long enough for every on of the old debates. All devices have issues, hardware and software.

Blow your mind,  they went to the moon with the power found in a TI-83 Calulator. What do any of us really do with the computing power we all to often argue about using a framework of thinking from 1990, that comes from 1980 that basicly is kept alive for no-ones benifit. I say the **** with the old arguments about platform.

Solve the problem or move on if you like, there is no harm in either. Let us know which device you buy and how you like it.

    Best of Luck.

    Good to know tip

You will only see the blue tooth or Wifi icon in the Top Menu bar if a device is connected. No Device no icon but your phone is still saying, hey blue tooth, hey wifi, hey blue tooth, hey wifi.

So if you are not using them turn them off.

Glad to here you have seen an improvement.

Good idea! I'm going to do one of my own: I'm going to use my iPhone until the battery dies, then charge it past full by an hour or so, and see if I can use my features without too much battery drain.

I've already tried a hard reset, with no positive results.

Hard reset doesn't work mate. I also tried. The best thing is restoring from itunes as a new iphone from your desktop or notebook. Cheers!

Apple!  Congrats!  You have within months of Jobs's death, you are following in the hurried and hasty steps of Microsoft a la Vista.  Thanks for enhancing my iPhone4 to a $200 worthless brick.  Maybe the new Windows should be my next phone aquisition.

Almost one hour later with NO USE whatsoever...started at 90% power...now at 80%. That's a 10 percent loss in just one hour. And this is after two hard reboots, deleting FB and turning off all but the basic notifications.

That's it, I'm wiping it and starting over. I'm taking the advice of DrStrangeP0rk.

Another thing to try is to replace your sim with a new one if you converted(cut) the normal SIM before.

For me, i had a SIM but i used sissors to cut them to make it micro, while that worked, i notice not all the phone's functions worked, like voice mail ICON within the phone app.

After updating to 5.01, things went doen hill. The signal was weak and would disconnect, and it was eating up all my juice!! I did all sorts of tests for apple, and did logs. I notice it kept trying to get new profiles for the phone, but was rejected some how.  Thats when I suspected the SIM.  I went to get my number transfered to a real MicroSim, now everything works, and I can get great uses before the battery goes down. I can get almost 9 hours of USAGE.

Your SIM could be the source of your issues!!

This is not exactly true, wi-fi works this way but bluetooth does not.  You will see the bluetooth icon even when not connected, it will just remain greyed out.

I've seen allot of cases of bluetooth was on in someones settings even though the icon wasn't there etc..  This was the case for me too but I think what we are seeing is that Apple has set up the OS so the first time you go to bluetooth in the menu, it automatically activates the radio, displays the icon, and starts searching for devices.  It makes sense, if you are acccessing the menu the first time it's probalby to connect a device.  I havent read any instances where this happens a second time.

    khanan,

i am having the same positive experience now.  in addtion to the iOS 5.0.1, i did reset to all my system settings and full discharge/full recharge.  standby performance has really improved from 2-4% drain an hr to negligible now.  it will stay at 100% the fist couple of hours if I don't use it/leave in standby. after two days now, it is actually performing better than what i remember from my original or 3GS new.

i have started another thread here with the complete update process, settings, etc.  8 out 9 others that i have either updated myself or followed my update process have seen similar results so far... glta
